Top Favs with E.R. Arroyo

You’re home alone, there’s a fire!  Top 3 things you’d grab and save from the fire.

Laptop, Cell phone, Wedding Ring

Top 3 Favorite snacks while writing and why

1 – Barq’s root beer – Because Barq’s has bite. (anyone remember those commercials?) It is my cure to all possible negative emotions. It is absolutely horrible for me—it’s my biggest dietary problem!

2 – Hershey’s chocolate bar (plain, no almonds) – because I’m a plain Jane kind of girl, and I have a wicked sweet tooth when trying to be creative or productive. Ok… well, I always have a sweet tooth.

3 – Carbs – rolls, bread, almond butter and jelly sandwiches, chips, crackers, cookies, brownies, CUPCAKES! I need an intervention just thinking about it.

Top 3 Favorite books that inspired you to write and why

1 – Tarzan of the Apes was the first book I ever loved as a child.

2 – Water for Elephants was the first book I ever loved as an adult. I loved the sense of adventure and the danger that comes with taking risks.

3 – I have an obvious soft spot for YA dystopians like The Hunger Games.

Top 3 favorite songs to listen to while writing and why

I’m not very good at picking favorites, especially not songs! What I listen to changes depending on what I’m writing. For The Offering, I spent most of my time on a Pandora channel I made. My top bands on the station are:

1 – Imagine Dragons, because their stuff just really gets me amped up. It’s exciting and fuels productivity. Favorite song, Nothing Left To Say.

2 – Mumford and Sons, because the singer is so emotional. I’m loving their sound a lot right now. Favorite song, White Blank Page.

3 – This is so hard! Picking only three of anything is so tricky… Can I cheat? – AWOLNATION, The Black Keys, Phillip Phillips, The Fray, Coldplay, … I listen to a lot :) I love music.

Top 3 favorite techniques to overcome writers block and why

1 – Watch a movie. Writer’s block is often a sign that something in the plot is not working. It helps to take a step away, and I think watching movies stimulates a different part of the storyteller’s mind. It’s nice to sit back and just be entertained now and again to unwind.

2 – Read something. Same as above, but it’s a lot closer to my actual craft. It’s like recharging my writer battery.

3 – Revisit the plot. If I’m stuck, it helps to reconsider my plot. Maybe what I’m writing is boring, therefore not inspiring me to continue. Maybe I have a plot problem, and I need to re-construct my outline. On very, very rare instances, I will jump ahead in the story and write something I’m excited about just to get in the juices flowing. In some form or another, all of the above happened in my first draft of The Offering.

Top 3 musicians/bands/groups and why

1 – John Mayer. What a brilliant songwriter. I’ve written my fair share of songs, and I think he had a lot to do with that. I actually wrote songs long before I ever started writing stories.

2 – Kings of Leon. Can’t explain why, really. The music speaks to me. The lyrics not so much….

3 – I have a huge soft spot for female singer/songwriters like Missy Higgins, Meiko, A Fine Frenzy, Ingrid Michaelson, Norah Jones, Sara Bareilles, and Feist.

Top 3 favorite movies of all time and why

1 – The Matrix. Man, when that came out, it was so cutting edge. That might be the moment I fell in love with science fiction.

2 – Zombieland. I’m a bit of a zombie nut. I adore the humor in this one, and the dynamic between Woody Harrelson and Jessie Eisenberg is perfect. They are both hilarious. Very clever screenplay. Love the whole cast really. I’ve watched this movie SO many times.

3 – The Proposal. This is my go-to chick flick. Great cast, great script. Super funny. Super sweet. Adore Sandra Bullock. Ryan Reynolds comedic style is so fun.

Top 3 favorite actors/actresses and why

1 – Sandra Bullock, because she’s hilarious and brilliant.

2 – Denzel Washington, because he’s one of a kind, and charming to boot.

3 – Angelina Jolie, because she’s a kick-butt lady.

Top 3 favorite gadgets and why

1 – Laptop! I live on my laptop. Obsessed with the internet. Plus the writing…

2 – Cell phone. If I’m not on my laptop, I’m either doing something with my baby, or on my cell phone. Sometimes both.

3 – Ninja Blender. Try this: 3 large frozen strawberries + 1/2 cup frozen dark sweet cherries + 1/4 cup frozen blueberries + 2 frozen slices of avocado + a few pieces of frozen kale + 1 Tbsp Chia seeds + 1 cup Pomegranate juice = Super Sweet Superfood Smoothie a la E.R. Arroyo.

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why

1 – Hawaii. I grew up on the Gulf Coast, and I miss the ocean! Plus, Hawaiis seem so beautiful and full of adventure that I would love to get into.

2 – London. I’ve been to Central America & Asia, but never to Europe. England seems like a great place to start!

3 – Disney World. When my kids (I only have one currently, but I’m planning another) get a little older, I’d love to take them there so I’ll have a good excuse to go. :) I’ve never been!
