Spotlight: The Innocent Assassins by Pema Donyo – Character Interview

There are three rules to staying an assassin at the corporation of Covert Operatives: (1) your parents must be deceased, (2) your contracts must remain confidential, and (3) you must be under the age of eighteen.

After a murder mission goes awry a month before her eighteenth birthday, Covert Operatives assassin Jane Lu finds herself caught by the federal government and forced to spy for the CIA while remaining in Covert Operatives. Once her spying mission is over she will be allowed to live a civilian life without facing criminal consequences, a life she’s only dreamed of having.

As Jane leaks information to the CIA, she uncovers secrets with enough power to both destroy Covert Operatives and her own boyfriend, Adrian King, who’s next in line to be CEO of the company. When her identity as a double agent for the CIA is discovered within Covert Operatives, she must decide where her allegiance, and her heart, truly lies.

Character Interview
*Note: This interview takes place before Chapter One of THE INNOCENT ASSASSINS*
INTERVIEWER: Thanks for tuning in to Operatives Weekly, the #1 international talk show for Covert Operatives agents. Back by popular demand, we’re here today to talk with Adrian King and Jane Lu, two of Covert Operatives’s rising stars and top assassins. They’re based at Covert Operatives’s headquarters in Southern California. Jane, tell us about your favorite moment as an agent at Covert Operatives.
JANE: Favorite moment? You mean our favorite kill?
INTERVIEWER: Well, let’s not put it that way. “Closing a contract” is the preferred term.
JANE: That’s a load of bull-
ADRIAN: -ets. That’s a load of bullets for all our contracts closed. We’re proud to have accomplished so much work for Covert Operatives. We can’t imagine serving any other corporation.
JANE: That’s not what I was going to-
INTERVIEWER: Happy to hear it, Adrian. Can we hear about how CO’s most accomplished assassination partnership was formed?
JANE: We used to be in the same foster home together when we were young. We’ve been best friends for as long as I can remember.
ADRIAN: *attempts to hold her hand* Lately we’ve been more than friends.
JANE: *moves away* I don’t know what you’re talking about.
ADRIAN: Oh come on, don’t deny it. It’s already been a year. The world’s ready to know we’re dat-
JANE: -a junkies! *pause* We just love data. Isn’t that right, Adrian?
ADRIAN: Um. Sure.
INTERVIEWER: Speaking of data, our records show you two possess the fastest average finish time to close a contract. All the other agents are wondering: what’s the secret?
ADRIAN: We trust each other. Even if sometimes she needs my help in making the right decision.
JANE: I can make the right decisions on my own, thanks. Who saved you in Cairo last week?
ADRIAN: If you’d just listened to me and chosen the machine gun, we would have never been in that situation in the first place.
JANE: And what if I hadn’t saved you?
ADRIAN: I knew you would. Like I said, I trust you. I’ll always trust you, Jane.
JANE: Even if you found out I lied to you? I doubt you’d trust me then.
ADRIAN: What makes you so sure? Maybe I’d be the one lying to you.
INTERVIEWER: And that’s all the time we have for today, agents! To stay tuned for more information about two of CO’s top assassins, visit and
