We’re celebrating the release of Blue Lily, Lily Blue with a Tarot Reading of THE RAVEN CYCLE series (past, present, and future!)

Today, we are providing a tarot card reading for the “The High Priestess” card.

Did you know that author Maggie Stiefvater designed The Raven Cycle Tarot, a Major Arcana 22-card deck inspired by The Raven Cycle series?  They’re all stunning!

The Tarot Card tour will be running from November 1 – November 22, 2014.  You can follow the full blog tour to see all 22 Tarot cards revealed, and have an opportunity to win a Limited Edition The Raven Cycle Tarot Deck for yourself!  You can visit the This Is Teen Pinterest page daily for new links to all the tour stops.

And now, here is the reading for

The High Priestess card

(The High Priestess is card number 2, and is the guardian of the unconscious mind)

The High Priestess is a card that indicates a magical time for love and when Blue first sees Gansey’s spirit on Saint Mark’s Eve she knows that this is either because she is his true love or because she killed him. This card represents wisdom and knowledge, both of which link back to Blue’s clairvoyant familial ties. The High Priestess is the guardian of the unconscious. She is an intermediary between the subconscious and parts of the subconscious that can only be accessed through dreaming and symbols. Both Ronan and Adam understand just what kind of power dreams hold and how they might interfere with the waking world.

The High Priestess may also indicate a change in an individual’s life. For Blue this could Maura’s disappearance, for the Raven Boys it could be an unexpected figure who has brought himself straight to Ablionby, and for both parties it could be the search for Glendower coming to a close. The High Priestess suggests that a woman might learn to trust herself and avoid turning to acting like her male counterpart. A certain female character in the novel does embrace this fully. This card wants their reader to trust their instincts as not everything is what it appears to be. These might also be beneficial times for a certain two people to think and feel (*cough* Blue and Gansey and their undefined relationship *cough*).

Lastly, the High Priestess signifies that it’s best to avoid conflicts entirely and to refrain from believing that all that has been presented before you is the truth. In terms of the future, it reads that there is a coming confrontation. This could involve Glendower, a certain antagonist or romantic affairs. The High Priestess is a card that knows without knowing and so, if behavior is being forced upon one of our beloved characters that is very out of their character, they’ll know better than to begin embracing it. Someone also may willingly be keeping secrets or knowledge from someone. Perhaps Blue and her Raven Boys should wonder if they are keeping secrets or if secrets are being kept from them and if so, why? They should also contemplate if they’ve been listening to their inner selves and if they are respecting themselves as well as any higher powers that may be involved.

AUDIO EXCERPT (PROLOGUE) – Read by Will Patton, published by Scholastic Audio in 2014. Music by Kate Hummel.

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive. Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.

Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after….

There is danger in dreaming. But there is even more danger in waking up.

Blue Sargent has found things. For the first time in her life, she has friends she can trust, a group to which she can belong. The Raven Boys have taken her in as one of their own. Their problems have become hers, and her problems have become theirs.

The trick with found things though, is how easily they can be lost.

“Equal parts thriller and mystery, with a measured dash of romance sprinkled on top…Maggie has woven such a unique, intriguing narrative that I struggled for comparisons..”—

“[A] well-paced neo-Gothic thriller about a teenage fivesome’s search for the supernatural . . .”— New York Times Book Review

“Simultaneously complex and simple, compulsively readable, marvelously wrought.”— Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“Stiefvater’s can’t-put-it-down paranormal adventure will leave you clamoring for book 2.” Entertainment Weekly

“[A]  tour de force of characterization, and while there is no lack of event or mystery, it is the way Stiefvater’s people live in the reader’s imagination that makes this such a memorable read.”— Publishers Weekly, starred review

All of it makes such an interesting read Maggie is the master of spinning stories that are just pure genius.

  15. Anela Oh

These books continually make me happy, they are a wonderful exploration of a side of YA literature that doesn’t get seen often.. It has romance while the whole book and character development are tied into that one aspect of it, and it is hilarious and dark and altogether wonderfully written!

  32. Amanda T

I love the super natural element this series has and the characters!

  33. Viki S.

I like how well developed the characters are.

  34. Monica M

By far the best thing about this series is how incredibly well written it is. I’ve never seen another author that has such an incredible insight into her characters; it is really amazing!

  35. Becca

Maggie Stiefvater is a master at seeing the mood and making you care about her characters. Her at is amazing too, so it’s pretty amazing to see the deck she created!

  36. Katherine

My favorite thing about Maggie Stiefvater’s books–and especially The Raven Cycle–is the characters. The way that they are described and how unique they are and how they change over the course of the series are all so amazing. Blue, Gansey, Ronan, Adam, Persephone, Kavinsky, the Grey Man and all the other incredible characters are the reasons why I picked up Blue, Lily, Lily, Blue and could not put it down until I’d finished.

  37. Kelley (Oh, the Books!)

I love SO many things about this series, but the tarot inclusion is definitely one of my favorites. In fact, it inspired a whole new series of blog posts for me, in which I explore tarot in various books and series (I’ve done 2 for this series so far, but have several more planned)!

  38. Emma San Cartier

The thing I love most about this series is how relatable and believable the characters are. It seems like someone you could meet in real life. :)

  39. Claire Williamson

This may be a cliche but I love how Maggie “shows” but doesn’t “tell” about character. We get to see Blue and Gansey and Ronan unfold piece by piece instead of being “told” what they’re “supposed” to be like.

  40. Sasha

Favorite part of the series is the character development!

  41. ysabella

I LOVE THIS SERIES. In all it’s organic and tangible magic <3

  42. Andrea M

I love the characters! Ronan is such a great character to me. I realize there are some aspects of him that aren’t as appealing but I’m such a ride or die fan.

  43. clarissa

I LOVE all of these cards. They are so beautiful and as amazing as Maggie. I’m doing all I can to win one of these babies!

  44. Angela

I love how atmospheric Maggie’s work is. These books are so gorgeous and lush – it’s been a long time since I’ve read something so consuming as this series.

  45. Holly U

GANSEY! <3 I mean, everyone else too, I guess.

  46. Rob

I just enjoy blue Sargent tbh

  47. Ann-Marie

I adore Maggie’s characters and their character growth. She’s a splendid writer.

  48. Vada Andrews

I love that they treat teenage readers with respect. Nothing is simplified or stereotyped or censored just because the books are aimed at teens.

  49. Elisa

I love everything about the Raven Cycle and all the other Maggie Stiefvater books!!!

  50. Kelly L.

I love Maggie’s writing! It is just so <3.

  51. Rebekah

Always such awesome things coming from the house of Steivater.

  52. Christina Abreu`

What I love most about this series is the characters. I’ve never read a book with characters that all have such different personalities. They are both interesting yet somehow realistic. realistically interesting.

  53. Elaney

Maggie’s writing and her characters. I love the characters so much.

  54. Iza

Gorgeous artwork by Maggie, as usual!

  55. johnna

    I’m so stoked about this!

  56. Jennifer C

    Maggie is my hero.

  57. WriterlySam

Brilliant idea! Can’t wait to see her entire tarot deck!

  58. Berenice

I listened to the first book in audio and it was fantastic. I must admit it’s been awhile of that but I’m planning to listen to it again before I pick up book 2, which thankfully I own. I love Maggie and I pretty much read everything she writes.

  59. Alyson C.

Maggie’s books are phenomenal, The Raven Cycle especially. The characters are so complete that they seem like real people. I can’t wait for book 4!

  60. Rachel

    This is a terrible question.

  61. Cathy

I love that the character arcs across the series have altered my feelings about the characters. They have not developed in a predictable way. Today I live Noah. Tomorrow, who knows?

  62. Sophie

The best thing about this series is the characters, each one is so unique, and flawed, and it makes the series so fantastic!

  63. Sarah VanBuskirk (@S_VanBuskirk)

Love Maggie and her creativity! Really excited to see where this story line goes….

  64. Cynthia

So beautiful. Look forward to seeing more.

  65. Brittany T

    The writing and RONAN!!!

  66. Sam Watson

I have always loved your writing! Although every day I wish silently to myself that there was more of the Wolves of Mercy Falls series, I can always confidently name it as my most favorite of all time. You’re the best <3

  67. Amanda

No brainer — I love the characters the most….especially Gansey.

  68. Melinda B

What I love most about the series: the way the characters are not perfect, but still so real and interesting and endearing that I get way too attached to them.

  69. Jillyn

As basic as it sounds, Maggie’s writing period. It’s distinct, descriptive, and sweeps you away in the story.

  70. Megan

Honestly the best and worst part of this series is that I couldn’t hold myself back from reading all of BLLB in less than a day, and now I have to wait at least til next year for the fourth book, and then it’ll be over… Very rarely do I steadfastly like each book in a series equally, but I can honestly say that’s the case here and there are no weaknesses. It’s one of the few series I’ve read multiple times before it’s even finished. Honestly my favorite thing about the series seems so trivial, but it’s very easy for me to immerse myself in the scenery because I live in a place very similar to Henrietta–just in the Tennessee part of the mountains!

  71. The uniqueness of it. Blue’s mom and aunt’s are hilarious, I love all the guys in the story. Everything has a role, the writing is truly fantastic!

  72. Lori Hopkins

I have not read this series yet, but I have heard lots of good things about it!

  73. Lindsey

I’ve never really used tarot cards, but this set looks so beautiful I can’t resist wanting it! Love all Stiefvater works!

  74. Caroline

The Raven Cycle is one of the most thrilling, mysterious, striking series that I’ve ever come across. My favorite part of the series has got to be Gansey’s series of personas; I love hearing about his shifts from “President Cell Phone” into a scholarly, normal boy.

  75. Clarisa Ramirez

I love most about this series is the guys and what they bring to the story and how Stiefvater won’t give out a lot details of school life and only the guys bits by bits.

  76. Madeleine

I love that this series has given me a lovely, practical female protagonist whom I identify with more strongly than any other I’ve yet to read about.

  77. Shannon

I love the slow build of the mystery and the way the puzzle is slowwwwwly coming together!!

  78. Nikki

The thing I love most about this series is the characters and their friendship, hands down. They are all in love with one another and I love them all SO MUCH.

  79. Matthew

    Blue is so badass!!

  80. Jessie H.

Besides the cars, right? :) My favorite parts are Ronan and Gansey!

  81. Alethea

GANSEY. I am glad he’s fictional or I’d have to feel really REALLY weird about having a crush on someone half my age.

  82. emily

    I ♡ this series!

  83. Tawni

My very favorite thing about this series is how each new development makes the entire rest of the series mean something new. Even though TRB hasn’t changed, this series makes it feel like it’s constantly evolving. Nothing about it is stagnant or set, and I never tire of re-reading it & learning.

  84. Brianna

I liked the series because of how realistic the characters are in a slightly unrealistic setting and the plot which is made up of little hints to point at a bigger one.

  85. Anna N.

I’m almost finished with the first book and looking forward to the rest. I love Maggie’s writings.

  86. Alexis

What I love most about the series is the complexity of the characters. And also Ronan <3

  87. Melissa L.

What I like about the series was Blue’s foretold future about causing her true love to die and anticipating who and when it would happen. It was what first drew me to reading the series besides having read Maggie’s books before.

  88. Alyssa Faulk

The best thing about the series, to me that is, is the mystery and imagination. Every word, every sentence, every moment, can all be seen behind your eyes. In your head, you can imagine every little detail, and it’s truly amazing being blessed with the gift to see a small portion (at least) of the world of The Raven Cycle. I love that it’s every bit hilarious as it dramatic and suspenseful. It’s just truly a (written) work of art.

  89. Sarah

    Thanks for doing this!

  90. Valerie

Maggie’s books are so compelling, such lovely reads. And she paints such fully realized characters with words.

  91. Angela

There are lots of things to like about this series, but one thing that I especially like is how active the author is on Twitter and Tumblr. Especially Tumblr.

  104. cookie l

My favorite thing about this series is the language

  105. Mel P.

Loving the art on these cards!

  106. Sean

Everything but the main character just has so much detail. How can I not like it?

  107. Angie

I absolutely love these tarot cards Maggie did. Her art is just fantastic!

  108. Jessica

Has anyone else made playlists for this series? It is so much fun to read this series to music.

  109. Sondra

Eeek I want these cards so bad…

  110. Sondra

In my want for the cards I completely forgot to include the fact that my favorite thing is simply put the relationships in this series. Just all of them.

  111. Cristina Escalante

I like the sense of longing that is present in this story. Specially with Blue and Gansey.

  112. Mary G Loki

I haven’t started to read either series yet. However I loved Wolf’s of Mercy Falls and Scorpio Races! So I am sure I love her new books!

Maggie’s artwork is gorgeous! I’d LOVE to have this deck.

What I love most about this series is the characters. The way Maggie Stiefvater describes them and writes their dialogue makes them so relatable and so realistic. You fall in love with each and every one of them.

  117. lori faires

I like the mystery, the supernatural element, the friendship between the characters, and the art work. Blessings to all.

  118. Becca

My favorite thing about the series is the depth of the characters.

  119. Nicole Layug

I don’t know if I can come up with just one thing that I love about the series! I love it all! The characters, the setting, the searching for Glendower! Maybe I would say Maggie’s writing because that is what brings it all life!

  120. Sarah (appifanie)

I love how richly detailed it is. There are so many layers, and characters who aren’t even people. It’s magical.

  121. Andreah

I love that there are four main characters; five counting Noah. I’ve never seen this done and so well by Maggie Stiefvater.

  122. Alison Meredith

    Great post!

  123. Alison Meredith

    I love the quest.

  124. JenPB

Would LOVE to win the artwork for Dear Daughter One who is currently hiding “Blue Lilly, Lilly Blue” from me until she finishes the first read. Maggie is a family favorite author!

  135. Makaela

I love Blue and her family the most!

  136. Stacy Renee

I’ve been following Maggie since Shiver and have always loved her uniqueness which really shows in her writing. I really like The Raven Cycle books because they glance into the ‘hidden world’ that most don’t believe exists at all. :)

  137. Brandy

I think I love the character the most. They are so real and it’s awesome watching them evolve and grow and solidify their relationship(s).

  138. Tami P

  141. Ani

I love everything about this series: I love the boys, I love Blue, I love Maggie’s magical writing, I love the character interactions, I love the humor and the subtle sarcasms, I love the friendships… but especially, I really just love Gansey!

  142. Hannah Hipkiss

The thing I love most about this series is that Maggie perfectly captures the element of real emotion and the fine details of life and combines them into a world of fiction and magic. It is haunting, dark and yet can connect with you in such a way that it surpasses almost every series I have ever read. Maggie’s work has always inspired me and it is exactly why she is my favorite modern author.

  143. Caitlin Fellows

I can’t wait to see how all of these fit into the next book!

  144. Amy

this is such a fun theme to go with Maggie’s wonderful writing!

  145. Molly

There is so much I love about this series. I love how it always keeps me guessing, I love the magical elements, I love how it’s like nothing else I’ve ever read before. But what makes this my favorite series is the characters and their development and relationships with one another. I love all of these characters so much and they are all so richly developed and I love the friendship that they all share. That’s what makes me love the Raven Cycle the most.

  146. Nadia

I love the relationships and the writing :D

  152. Crystal D

My favorite thing about the books is the relationships Blue has with the people in her life.

I love the characters of this series. For all the magic that surrounds them they are grounded so well in reality, and watching them grow separately and together as they get to know themselves and each other better is wonderful.

  154. Rain Jeys

Haven’t read it yet, so I don’t know.I just love supernatural stuff.

  155. Samantha Gee

I love how real the characters are, and I love the writing. Some books have a good plot, so I read them, but with a Maggie Stiefvater book I find myself sighing a lot at the descriptions and original turns of phrase. One thing that I’m noticing while rereading the Scorpio Races is how different Sean and Puck’s voices are.

  156. Robert Dix

I love all her characters – they are so realistic and magical at the same time.

  157. Julia

    Maggie’s involvement

  158. Janellie Berlanga

I love the air of mystery after every page it always draws me near and makes me wonder what will become of the characters

  159. Sharnee Rawson

Maggie’s characters and the relationships between them are the kind that inspire me in my own writing. They are so unique and well developed that they have honestly set a near impossible standard of reading for myself, and for my friends who have also read The Raven Cycle.

  160. Sharnee Rawson

Maggie’s unique, in depth characters and the adorable relationships between them are an element that I strive to incorporate in my own writing. I love that Blue is a strong and independent female protagonist who breaks the carbon mould and wields personality that is quirky and likable. I love Gansey and the fact that he is not the typical macho male love interest. I love Ronan… because he’s a grumpy cactus and needs hugs.
    I love… okay, yes I shall stop.

The complex characters. The way they all are kinda messed up in their own way, and how they all view each others as friends.

  169. Huma
