Per her 537 rules, Harper Campbell keeps her life tidy—academically and socially. But the moment Sterling Lane transfers into her tiny boarding school, her twin brother gets swept up in Sterling’s pranks and schemes and nearly gets expelled. Harper knows it’s Sterling’s fault, and to protect her brother, she vows to take him down. As she exposes his endless school violations, he keeps striking back, framing her for his own infractions. Worst of all, he’s charmed the administration into thinking he’s harmless, and only Harper sees him for the troublemaker he absolutely is.

As she breaks rule after precious rule in her battle of wits against Sterling and tension between them hits a boiling point, she’s horrified to discover that perhaps the two of them aren’t so different. And maybe she doesn’t entirely hate him after all. Teaming up with Sterling to save her brother might be the only way to keep from breaking the most important rule—protecting Cole.

Road to Publication

Thank you so much for hosting me on your blog and for helping me share STERLING LANE with the world. I’m so glad you asked about the road to publication, because just last week I was going through my e-mails from around the time I signed the publishing contract and I found some e-mail chains that brought back all those happy chills.

I wrote Sterling Lane a few years ago, and I wrote it in a frenzy. As soon as I committed to the quirkiness of the narrator, it’s like the words could not be typed quickly enough. But once it was finished, I realized how different it was from my first novel VALKYRIE RISING, and thought I should work on something that readers would expect following a paranormal debut. I spent some time tinkering with a suspense novel and with a western, trying to find my groove. But nothing flowed out of me as naturally as Sterling Lane did. I put a lot of my heart into that book and it was begging me to do something about it.

At about that time, my good friend Heidi Kling signed a contract to publish her amazing novel PAINT MY BODY RED with Entangled. If you’ve not read that book, or NOT OKAY, CUPID, you need to get to your online or brick and mortar bookstore of choice and pick them both up! Heidi reads countless drafts of my drivel, including STERLING LANE, and during a conversation with her new editor, learned that Entangled was looking for quirky, fun romances.  After probing a little more, she decided they were looking for STERLING LANE specifically and told me to dust that manuscript off and get busy submitting it. So I did!

Weeks later, I was in my favorite place in the world–Hawaii. I was sitting in an outdoor restaurant overlooking an ocean so blue and beautiful, watching boats sail past. Below is a little sneak peek for you.  And, of course, I was thinking that was the most perfect moment ever…when fate topped it.  I got an e-mail from Kate Brauning at Entangled saying she loved the manuscript and was taking it to acquisitions. So my perfect moment in paradise was made even more perfect, and my husband and I celebrated with Mai Tais.

Kate was the perfect editor for this book. She challenged me, and her comments made me laugh and brought out the best in my characters. I’m so grateful to Heidi and Kate for helping STERLING LANE escape from my hard drive!

Once after I’d had eye surgery I kept freaking out one of my co-workers by threatening to take off my eyepatch and shoe her what my eye looked like. Then, the day after Halloween, I found on sale a bag full of “Eyeballs of Terror.” Just the size for slipping under my eyepatch and letting fall at an opportune moment..
