Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they’ve taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back. Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever. She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.

Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.

We were in no way paid for our opinion **

When I first looked at Wake by Amanda Hocking, I was pretty sure that the story would be interesting considering what the cover looked like. I know, I know, you shouldn’t judge a book by its’ cover, but when it looks like that you can’t really blame me. However, once I read the synopsis the story had my attention completely. Lately, I’ve found myself a huge fan of mermaid novels—but this one story was absolutely nothing like what I expected… it was better!

The novel is about main character Gemma who is a powerful swimmer who is beginning to fall in love with her childhood friend Alex. Three new girls enter town…they’re beautiful and hold an age-old secret that is far more dangerous than the reader can imagine when first entering the story. One thing that was interesting about the novel was that it had two stories inside of one. There’s the story of Gemma and her transition from normal girl to a gorgeous siren, and the story of her older sister Harper who worries for her sister and how her life is affected by the entrance of the sirens. Don’t deny it, guys. That sounds pretty freaking awesome and you know it.

Wake was a thrilling read. It started off a bit on the slow side, but it was written in such a captivating way that I was compelled to continue reading. I couldn’t stop even if I wanted to. I had to know what would happen next and if I wanted to stop, my brain would say “One more chapter… Or maybe three” because it was just that good. When it came to the topic of the sirens and their existence, I was frightened at the depth of the mythology behind them, especially since it involved Greek mythology and held a story that was both tragic and magical. Plus ‘the curse’ that all the sirens have, stuck with the mythology and held properties that were dark and frightening.

I loved the romance in Wake. Either it was the full out relationship between Gemma and Alex, or the cute flirting between Harper and Daniel. The romance and interaction between characters is unparalleled to anything I’ve ever read before. When it came to Gemma and Alex, I hated knowing that because of Gemma now being a siren she could never truly love because nobody would truly love her ever again. When it came to the plot, I was shocked at the amount of creepy twists and turns that kept me interested in the novel—well that and the series of murders.

I would recommend Wake to fans of mermaid lore, Greek mythology, YA romance and fans of Amanda Hocking’s other works. A fun read that started with a bang and ended with one too.

About the Author:

I live in Minnesota with my dog, two cats, two fish, and my roommate/assistant/platonic lifemate, Eric. I actually live in Austin, a.k.a. SPAMTown, USA. They invented SPAM here, and the town is quite proud of it. (Here’s a vlog with a fun tour of the SPAM museum: here.)

I do many things, most of them lame and boring, but the thing I get paid to do is write young adult books.

All three books in my Trylle TrilogySwitched,Torn, and Ascend – were originally self-published, but were re-released with St. Martin’s and Pan Macmillan internationally with new bonus content in early 2012. The trilogy has also made the USA Today Bestseller list, the New York Times Bestseller list, and was recently optioned for a film by Media Rights Capital with District 9 screenwriter Terri Tatchell adapting the books for screen.

St. Martin’s and Pan Macmillan recently acquired my new young adult four-book series Watersong, with the first book Wake coming out in August 2012. My zombie series, The Hollows, is being adapted into a graphic novel by Dynamite.

I also enjoy Red Bull, Jim Henson, Batman, Jane Austen, Star Wars legos, and I absolutely hate long walks on the beach out of my intense fear/hatred of wet sand.

I’m so glad to have stumbled upon this review! I always like reading what other people have to say about books. And since I’m really looking forward to reading Wake it was nice to read someone else’s insight on the story. I can’t wait to read it! :) And I’m not naive so I would definitely choose love over beauty. n_n!

  20. JennyC

Both..but you can only choose one so love:)

  21. Emily (Ed and Em's Reviews)

Love, definitely. I think being in love makes you beautiful and having someone who loves you for who you are is better than being beautiful because you know that the person who loves you thinks you are beautiful and that’s all that matters.

I’ve read a couple of books by Amanda Hocking, and I thought they were great! Can’t wait to start reading this new book!! Thanks for the giveaway! :)

  33. Irma Hernandez

My answer to the question would be LOVE of course. There’s this saying in spanish “La belleza se acaba con el tiempo, eso no dura para siempre”, and it translates to “Beauty ends with time, it doesn’t last forever.” So beauty isn’t that ideal for me…

  34. Colleen Kosinski

    Definitely, love.

  35. Nickle Love

    I’ll choose love. <3

  36. Gaby

    Definitely love :)

  37. leannessf

I would choose love over beauty any day. I love Hocking’s previous work and look forward to reading this new trilogy.

  39. Stella C

Love is more stable while (outer) beauty does not last. Inner beauty, if that doesn’t last, love will fade with it.

  40. Brandy Dull

I would choose love, beauty does not last forever, but true love does.

  41. Erika

Since I’m a romantic by nature, I think I’d pick love! thanks for the giveaway! Dying to read this one:)

  42. Sarah Cruz

    Definitely love:)

  43. Emily

  44. Jolene A

    I would pick Love

  45. Kassandra Fuentes

I would always choose love, because beauty does not always last. On the other hand, love lasts through out ones lifetime.

  46. Allie Rose

Love. Beauty is great and all, but it doesn’t really make you feel all giddy and happy inside. Or maybe it does for some people, who knows. *shrugs* that’s a whole different issue lol. Love hands down. I’ve always been of a fan of the saying “love is blind”.

  47. Kitty

    love, for sure ♥

  48. Sarah Rooney

Love, 100%. Beauty doesn’t matter if you don’t have love, as corny as that sounds :) Thanks for the giveaway!

  49. Kenia

    Definitely love :)
