Gabby-2013When I read Unbreakable by author Kami Garcia about a year ago I have to admit that I was pretty underwhelmed. It wasn’t as great as her co-written Beautiful Creatures and I did have a hard time getting into the story despite how interested I was in the premise. Understandably, I was a bit worried when it came to reading Unmarked. I can say after having finished the sequel novel that it was surprisingly very good in comparision to the novel that came before it and with that being said I’m looking forward to find out what will happen next after Unmarked.

Taking place after the events that occurred in Unbreakable,  main character Kennedy Waters is recovering from having released the demon that the Legion has spent centuries trying to keep locked up. As her aunt tries to return her life to its original state, Kennedy is once again pulled into the world of demons and secret societies. This time the stakes are raised when she and the other Legion members delve deep into the secrets behind the Illuminati and attempt to keep the demon that Kennedy released from harming anybody else. Then Kennedy is reunited with the love of her life and discovers family secrets that are best left burried. Unexpectedly the life of somebody she loves most is left hanging in the balance and it’s all up to Kennedy to make the ultimate decision.

What I liked most about Unmarked was the fact tha tKnenedy’s character has changed so much from who she was in the last book. The girl from Unbreakable was annoying and borderline Mary Sue. The girl who I got in Unmarked felt like an entirely different person. Kennedy made decisions that were make-or-break, she did and saw things in the novel that she wouldn’t have even thought about in the last book. Kennedy’s character growth is definitely what’s finally won me over into being a fan of The Legion series.

A lot more is happening in Unmarked. There aren’t any chapters that feel like filler and there aren’t any scenes that felt unnecessary. Everything that happens happened for a reason and went to push the plot forward. Every chaper made sense and certain clues were left behind that slowly begin to felsh out the details behind the murders of teenage girls and the reasons behind why they’ve been killed. Not to mention we get to see a bunch of new characters who have taken a class in badassery.

Of the new characters we get to see, none of them are identical. They’re strong and independent and not afraid to look a demon in the eye and threaten to send them right back to where they came from. With these new characters also comes new information on the Legion and the Illiuminati as well as details on Kennedy’s deceased mother and her deadbeat dad.

My only real issue with Unmarked and Unbreakable is the writing-style. It’s too simplistic. There are intense scenes that are all just lacking the right amount of details. I found it too hard to get a clear image of just what was happening in the scenes and had to fill in a lot of the empty spaces myself. It took away from the experience and I wish there could have been more for her to build up the world in my imagination.

I would recommend the Legion series to readers who are looking for a novel that is very much like Supernatural. Any readers who are fans of the paranormal or want a novel that is all about hunting monsters should give the series a shot.
