Brighton and Leah have been the best of friends since seventh grade. Where Brighton is the quiet one who is focused on school, Leah is the bold and daring one who craves the adoration of an audience. It’s always worked for them, until now.

Heading into their senior year, Brighton is challenged with an opportunity that can change the course of her future. The only problem? She just might have to step out of her best friend’s shadow.

But when Leah doesn’t support the choices she makes, Brighton is forced to reevaluate what true friendship is.

Brighton is changing and exciting doors are opening. A new world of music, friends, and even love are falling at her feet. But it’s hard to enjoy it when Leah’s life is spiraling out of control.

Now Brighton must try to not only save her friendship, but also her friend, before it’s too late.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)
In the search to find myself, I lost my best friend.

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?
My daughters are my inspiration. My first true YA story was Finding Laila and it was based on conversations I had with them about friends. The Upside of Regret feels like a continuation of those conversations, though these are not the same characters. This story was over a year in the making, but it was most definitely a labor of love. I tend to write my stories featuring (what I hope are) strong female leads so that I can reach my girls without preaching to them too much. J

Tell us about the main character(s).
Brighton is a senior in high school who is finally starting to come out of her shell. Her best friend, who’s always been the center of attention, doesn’t like this change but Bright knows it’s for the best. She’s an independent girl who knows herself pretty well, but it’s those around her that she’s discovering.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?
Without giving anything away, I think the part on Halloween is probably my favorite part. I think I smiled a lot writing that chapter.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?
Ah…yes. Definitely. I relate a little to both of the main female characters in this book for different reasons. There’s a part where Leah confesses to Brighton and it was especially tough to write because it’s very personal. But I also felt that it was important.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?
Well, Leah is getting her story. It doesn’t quite have a title yet, so for now It’s Aimless Perfection Book 2. And for anyone who’s read Finding Laila – Cole is getting a book. His is due out later this year. And I also have book 3 in the Girls of Beachmont Series.

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!
Thank you so much for having me! I hope your readers consider giving The Upside of Regret a read because I think it’s one of my best. I truly love these characters and I hope yall do too.
