Nestled below the skyline of Detroit you’ll find Greektown, a few short blocks of colorful bliss, warm people and Greek food. In spite of growing up immersed in the safety of her family and their rich culture, Jill Zannos doesn’t fit in. A Detroit homicide detective, she manages to keep one foot planted firmly in the traditions started by her grandparents, while the other navigates the most devastated neighborhoods in the city she can’t help but love. She is a no nonsense workaholic with no girlfriends, an odd boyfriend who refuses to grow up, and an uncanny intuition, inherited from her mystic grandmother, that acts as her secret weapon to crime solving success. Her story winds around tales of her family and their secret laden history, while she investigates the most despicable murder of her career.

The Greeks of Beaubien Street is a modern tale of a family grounded in old world, sometimes archaic, tradition, as they seek acceptance in American society. They could be any nationality, but they are Greek.

Repeat, contains a depiction of rape, so please don’t read this book if you will be horribly upset by a depiction of rape and murder.

Top Favs with Suzanne Jenkins

You’re home alone, there’s a fire!  Top 3 things you’d grab and save from the fire:

Besides my dogs and husband, I’d grab my computer, my box of discs and my drawer of check books.

Top 3 Favorite authors (dead or alive) and why:

Pearl Buck because she addresses modern problems in an ancient society.

Paul Theroux, because he isn’t afraid to write about unpopular topics.

Maeve Binchy because she juxtaposes the beautiful Irish countryside with the pain of life.

Top 3 Favorite snacks while writing and why:

Can’t eat while I’m writing because I’ll wreck my computer. It’s happened before.

Top 3 Favorite books that inspired you to write and why :

Wow, that’s a tough one! Probably The Good Earth by Pearl Buck, My Detroit, Growing up Greek and American in Motor City by Dan Georgakas, and Dark Star Safari by Paul Theroux. The descriptions are so detailed and rich!

Top 3 favorite techniques to overcome writers block and why:

Sleep and giving it time, and then just diving in and writing again. Not sure why those things work for me.

Top 3 musicians/bands/groups and why:

All oldies from the sixties. Led Zeppelin, Crosby Stills and Nash, Beatles.  Why? Memories I guess.

Top 3 favorite movies of all time and why:

Annie Hall, The Perfect Murder, Manhattan. Love New York stories.

Top 3 favorite movie moments and why:

In Love Affair with Annette Bening and Warren Beatty when they kiss at her cabin door. Oh my God. They are married in real life you just know he really loves her.

In You’ve Got Mail when Meg Ryan is waiting for her online admirer and Tom Hanks harasses her.  She comes home to her apt and crawls into bed with her clothes on.

In The Perfect Murder when Gwyneth Paltrow is walking down the street on the Upper East Side. You just know that’s her town!

Top 3 favorite actors/actresses and why:

The old Meg Ryan. She’s the antithesis of me.

Christian Bale, because, because, gulp.

Sarah Jessica Parker; she paved the way for women who aren’t classic beauties to be thought of as such. Probably because she’s thin and has big breasts, but I hope its for more than that.

Top 3 favorite gadgets and why:

Smart phone, wireless mouse, TV remote. They make life so much easier.

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why:

My bed, my garden and my studio. I don’t get enough time in any of those places.
