A girl with an unknown destiny.

A boy from a hidden world.

When Celeste starts at a new school in a small, Kansas town, she hears whispering voices, has vivid nightmares, and swarms of blackbirds follow her every move. She is oddly drawn to aloof Rylan, the other new student who has his own secrets.

The exact moment she turns seventeen, she wakes to a bedroom full of strange creatures, purple light emanating from her hands, and Rylan breaking in through her bedroom window.

He knows what she is . . .

I get obsessed with my characters. They inhabit my mind for months.

I usually have a clear picture in my head of what they look like, but you can’t see inside my head (hopefully).

If I lived in a magical fantasy land of awesomeness and got to pick famous actors to portray the characters, these would be my choices.

The main character was the easiest character for me to visualize, but very hard for me to name. Since the paranormal element of the story is based on an old Irish legend, she needed to be of Irish descent. She’s sixteen with waist length dark red hair and unusual violet eyes. I stumbled across the name “Celeste” while researching Irish names. It’s perfect: It’s Irish, beautiful, and is reference to celestial beings, which is nice word play with her “Light.” In my dream fantasy world, the actress playing her would be Emily Browning.

Celeste’s adoptive parents represent her safety and security. I wanted her to have a supportive family as she deals with all her challenges. Her mom, Abby Shreeve, is an earth mother: beautiful, long braids, flowing skirts and an obsession with tea. In my dream fantasy world, the stunning Jada Pinkett Smith would play her mother because I totally ADORE her.

Her father, Harold Shreeve, represents safety for her, and his physical characteristics reflect that. He’s tall, solid, and the supportive kind of dad that every daughter wants in her corner. Dennis Haysbert fits the bill in every way.  Is it me or does this actor have the most commanding voice and presence ever?

Any then there is Ryan. Tall, dark, handsome and aloof. And hot. Very, very, hot. So, yeah, um Drew Roy would be my hands-down dream choice. If you haven’t seen the U.S. television show “Falling Skies,” this talented actor is a great reason to watch (aside from being a fantastic show).

Tink is awesome. He’s her best friend from day one. He sticks by her side even when her world gets crazy. He’s snarky, funny and fabulous. My dream choice for Tink? Chris Colfer, because I love him on Glee and I think he’s an amazing actor.

Last but not least, Kara Ramone. She’s one of Celeste’s kind. Blond, curvy, and looks like she’s in her mid thirties, she’s a counselor by profession, but prefers to wear vintage t-shirts and ripped jeans when meeting with her patients. She has a strong, commanding personality and hides a lot of secrets. My dream choice for her would be Cameron Diaz.
