The mad Shōgun Yoritomo has been assassinated by the Stormdancer Yukiko, and the threat of civil war looms over the Shima Imperium. The Lotus Guild conspires to renew the nation’s broken dynasty and crush the growing rebellion simultaneously – by endorsing a new Shōgun who desires nothing more than to see Yukiko dead.

Yukiko and the mighty thunder tiger Buruu have been cast in the role of heroes by the Kagé rebellion. But Yukiko herself is blinded by rage over her father’s death, and her ability to hear the thoughts of beasts is swelling beyond her power to control. Along with Buruu, Yukiko’s anchor is Kin, the rebel Guildsman who helped her escape from Yoritomo’s clutches. But Kin has his own secrets, and is haunted by visions of a future he’d rather die than see realized.

Kagé assassins lurk within the Shōgun’s palace, plotting to end the new dynasty before it begins. A waif from Kigen’s gutters begins a friendship that could undo the entire empire. A new enemy gathers its strength, readying to push the fracturing Shima imperium into a war it cannot hope to survive. And across raging oceans, amongst islands of black glass, Yukiko and Buruu will face foes no katana or talon can defeat.

The ghosts of a blood-stained past.

MaryAnn NewThis book blew me away!  Totally and completely had me in awe.  The ending was an action packed movie that had images of aerobatic fight scenes with big ass swords and coordinated duals that would make dancers jealous.  It was a delightful tale full of plot twists and revelations and had me gasping pretty much throughout the entire read.

I will admit, with having read book one of this series a while ago, I was feeling a little confused with all the different characters that were being introduced into the story.  There were most that I remembered from book one, but there were also new characters that were introduced that had me mixing up characters in my mind.  With the constant change of character views with every chapter, I felt that I had to constantly refer back to previous chapters, or use the handy dandy character glossary found in the book.  Once I was able to distinguish between characters, the book started to flow smoothly, and the pages flew by quickly.  I was completely absorbed in this world created by author Jay Kristoff, and was once again, enraptured by the characters and storyline.

In Kinslayer, Yukiko is now one that is feared by many and celebrated by most.  Known as the Stormdancer, when she is riding the skies with Buruu, she is a force to be reckoned with.  But with her gift getting stronger and affecting her terribly, her gift may end up being her undoing.

With the rebels gaining in numbers and ready for a final battle with The Lotus Guild and the new leader, secret rendezvous’ are revealed and hope for freedom hangs in the air.  But will one act of violence cause a key player in this revolution to turn away from loved ones and destroy everything?

Three statements that I would say about Kinslayer by Jay Kristoff would be:

  1. 1 – WTF BURUU??!
  2. 2 – Holy shat Yukiko!  I didn’t see that coming!
  3. 3 – Nooooooooooooo!  The treachery…!!

Let me tell you that when things pick up in this book, things totally PICK UP IN THIS BOOK!  It was a non-stop action filled ride that left me crying out for the next installment.  A cliffhanger of all cliffhangers was the pleasant surprise that fantabulous author, Jay Kristoff, leaves his readers.

The descriptions and imagery in the book were absolutely breathtaking and completely graphic.  The battles we get to read about jump right out of the page, complete with the sounds of explosions in the background, clanging of metal on metal, smells of blood and death… Jay Kristoff leaves no stone unturned when it comes to describing what is happening.  Everything from little gasps to images of guts spilling out, not a detail is missed to enable readers to really be in the moment.

I really can’t get into much of what I’d like to without spoiling the crap outta this read, but let me leave you with this… If you’re looking for a read that feels like the movie Braveheart come to life before your very eyes, read this book.  If you’re looking for a read that is unique and different from anything you have ever read out there, read this book.  If you’re looking for a book that has characters that you will cry out with and for, read this book.  Seriously…just read this book!  You won’t be disappointed.

Jay Kristoff grew up in the most isolated capital city on earth and fled at his earliest convenience, although he’s been known to trek back for weddings of the particularly nice and funerals of the particularly wealthy. He spent most of his formative years locked in his bedroom with piles of books, or gathered around dimly-lit tables rolling polyhedral dice. Being the holder of an Arts degree, he has no education to speak of.

Jay’s debut novel, STORMDANCER, a Japanese-inspired steampunk fantasy, will be published by Thomas Dunne/St Martin’s Press, Tor UK & PanMacMillan in September 2012 as the first installment of THE LOTUS WAR trilogy. Jay is 6’7 and has approximately 13870 days to live. He abides in Melbourne with his secret agent kung-fu assassin wife, and the world’s laziest Jack Russell. He does not believe in happy endings.
