To defeat the darkness, she must first embrace it.

Months have passed since Juliet Moreau returned to civilization after escaping her father’s island—and the secrets she left behind. Now, back in London once more, she is rebuilding the life she once knew and trying to forget Dr. Moreau’s horrific legacy—though someone, or something, hasn’t forgotten her.

As people close to Juliet fall victim one by one to a murderer who leaves a macabre calling card of three clawlike slashes, Juliet fears one of her father’s creations may have also escaped the island. She is determined to find the killer before Scotland Yard does, though it means awakening sides of herself she had thought long banished, and facing loves from her past she never expected to see again.

As Juliet strives to stop a killer while searching for a serum to cure her own worsening illness, she finds herself once more in the midst of a world of scandal and danger. Her heart torn in two, past bubbling to the surface, life threatened by an obsessive killer—Juliet will be lucky to escape alive.

With inspiration from Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this is a tantalizing mystery about the hidden natures of those we love and how far we’ll go to save them from themselves.

Gabby-2013When I first read The Madman’s Daughter by author Megan Shepherd I had been pulled into an amazing, mind-blowing, addictive read. The story of Juliet Moreau, her father’s beast-men creations and the island where they have been kept far from society was unlike anything I had read before and instantly made it one of my favorite novels that I’ve gotten to read. It was dark, romantic and (most importantly) well-written. The way it ended on a cliff-hanger had me well aware that I would have to get reading the sequel Her Dark Curiosity as soon as possible. Her Dark Curiosity was not what I expected it to be and I mean that in the best of ways. The story (a retelling of Jekyll & Hyde) still held all the great properties from The Madman’s Daughter but things take a new turn as Juliet’s story progresses.

In the sequel, Juliet has returned to England, putting her father’s murder and the horrors on the island behind her. Now living with her guardian and trying to find her place in high society, Juliet is aware that even in death her father is still with her. Without a cure for her illness her body is slowly beginning to grow frail and it’s only a matter of time before things take a turn for the worst. It isn’t until there are a new series of murders that Juliet begins to grow worried. Especially when she discovers that each killing not only effects somebody who has wronged her but that the victims all have three distinct claw-markings and a flower left behind.

All of these murders exactly like the ones on the island. Juliet can’t believe that there’s still a possibility of Edward still being alive however she quickly learns that anything is possible and that the past and past obsessions are about to return to haunt her. In order to stop the murders and save herself, Juliet learns of dark secrets and how the only way she can save herself and those around her is by succumbing to the same sciences that drove her father mad.

Her Dark Curiosity raises the stakes. Everybody felt like they were at risk, the story was nothing but fast-paced and kept me on my toes. I wasn’t sure what would happen next but what I was sure of was that any character could become a victim to the killer introduced in the novel. It was awesome and at the same time left me freaked out because anybody could die. Nobody felt safe in the novel and by the time it reached its conclusion I was having pretty bad trust issues with getting attached to anybody.

There’s a lot more romance in Her Dark Curiosity. I don’t want to say too much because there are just so many spoilers but I’ll say that: a) there’s more romance. More kissing. More love. More reasons to ship Juliet with other characters. b) You know that Juliet has a choice to make when it comes to the topic of her romantic interest and I personally know who I hope she ends up with… c) With more romance also comes more drama and more psychopathic monsters that are obsessed with Juliet, having an ‘if I can’t have you nobody can’ mentality.

In comparison to The Madman’s Daughter, Her Dark Curiosity is faster. Everything that happens is just so fast, no two scenes are the same. It’s great. By the time I reached the 50% point of the novel I was shocked that it wasn’t the ending especially with the growing craziness that takes place in the novel. Juliet’s at risk, everybody’s at risk, people are searching for cures, secrets come to light—it was pure madness. I loved it.

With the way that this novel ended I am absolutely dying to get to read the last novel in the trilogy. I need to know what happens next in both the story and in the characters’ lives. I would have to recommend this series to fans of darker, grittier novels, readers who want a dark romance and to any fans of historical fiction who want some science thrown into it. There is no doubt that this is one of my favorite book series.

I’ve been many things, like a professional exchange student, park ranger in Montana, and LOST enthusiast, but what I am now is a writer.

I think it’s fair to say I was born into it. I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, raised behind the counter of my parents’ independent bookstore, Highland Books in Brevard. Ah, so many free books.

But I never thought being a writer could be a real career. After college I thought I’d end up as a foreign service officer somewhere dashing and exotic, like Canada. I studied French, Spanish, German, and Russian and still speak a few of those. Then I joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Senegal, where I learned a few more languages I’ll never speak again and lived in a mud hut with no electricity or running water. You can probably imagine how that experience went, but if you’re curious, here are the dirty details.

It wasn’t until a chance aquaintance read something I wrote and said, “have you ever considered being a writer?” that something clicked and I realized it was possible. My husband encouraged me, and I quickly fell head-over-heels in love with writing and children’s literature in particular. I started out writing articles, which have appeared in Faces, Appleseeds, and Calliope magazines, and stories for younger children. I soon realized I wasn’t sweet enough to write fiction for that age and found myself writing young adult literature instead, which doesn’t require nearly as many tender moments and includes a lot more cursing.

When I’m not writing, I can usually be found horseback riding, day dreaming at coffee shops, or hiking in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. I love to hear from readers, so please drop me a line!
