five ways to fall

Purple-haired, sharp-tongued Reese MacKay knows all about making the wrong choice; she’s made plenty of them in her twenty-odd-years. So when her impulsive, short-lived marriage ends in heartbreak, she decides it’s time for a change. She moves to Miami with the intention of hitting reset on her irresponsible life, and she does quite well…aside from an epically humiliating one-night stand in Cancun with a hot blond bouncer named Ben. Thank God she can get on a plane and leave that mistake behind her.

Football scholarship and frat parties with hot chicks? Part of charmer Ben Morris’s plan. Blown knee that kills any hope of a professional football career? So not part of the plan. Luckily Ben has brains to go with his knockout looks and magnetism. After three long years of balancing law school with his job as a bouncer at Penny’s Palace, he’s ready to lead a more mature life—until his first day of work, when he finds himself in the office of that crazy, hot chick he met in Cancun. The one he hasn’t stopped thinking about.

If Ben truly were a smart guy, he’d stay clear of Reese. She’s the boss’s stepdaughter and it’s been made very clear that office romances are grounds for dismissal. Plus, rumor has it she’s trouble. The only problem is, he likes trouble, especially when it’s so good-looking…

MaryAnn-2013Five Ways to Fall by K.A. Tucker surprised me and was everything I hoped it would be, and I’m so so so so so so so so sad that it’s the final book in the Ten Tiny Breaths series.

In this final installment, the story of Ben unfolds.  I will be honest, I wasn’t all that excited read Ben’s story.  He was a secondary character in the Ten Tiny Breaths books, and in all honestly, I didn’t really care to hear his tale.  But I have already kicked myself repeatedly for even having those thoughts.  Shame on me, and shame on you if you were thinking the same.

Ben is…amazing.  A hardcore player/manwhore, but underneath that all, he is the sweetest guy ever.  And the pairing of him and Reese were perfect in every way.

In Five Ways to Fall, after a heartbreaking opener, the story opens up in Cancun, Mexico where our love birds first meet.  It’s not exactly romantic and all fireworks, but it certainly is a night that they won’t forget.  They probably will never run into each other ever again, right?  Righhhhttttt.

Ben leaves his job as bouncer and emerges into the lawyer world.  Unable to relocate somewhere else due to his devotion to his mother, Ben lands a pretty great job…and runs into the one person he won’t soon forget.  Reese, the girl from Cancun.  And her stepfather is the big boss man.

After a sorry excuse of a marriage (6 months), Reese hopes to “exorcise her demons” in Cancun with nights of debauchery.  Unfortunately, the guy that she was supposed to use to forget about her cheating ex-husband lands a job as a lawyer at the firm she works at.

Wanting to get back at her ex for crushing her heart, Reese and Ben decide to be each other “fake girlfriend/boyfriend” knowing full well that they will not develop any sort of feelings for each other…Let the games begin!

In Five Ways to Fall, we learn the deep dark secret of Ben’s family and of Reese, both of which rocked me to the core.  Past characters from the series make cameos (which I love), and Cain’s story kinda intersects with this one.

It was interesting to see just how the effects of their parents’ relationships affects the relationships that both Ben and Reese have had.  And it was completely heartbreaking when the secrets of their parents’ past catches up with them.

What I really enjoyed about Five Ways to fall by K.A. Tucker was witnessing the budding relationship between Ben and Reese.  There’s only one way that things can go when  you have a “pretend to be my boyfriend/girlfriend” type relationship going on.  I adored when the realization hit them both that there was definitely something going on between the two of them…something that they both weren’t counting on.

The feisty Reese is the epitome of a woman scorned.  She is one tough chick that I would NOT want on my bad side.  The jabs between Reese and Ben is what made this book really addicting to me.  I needed to breathe this story into myself.  I was entranced by the interaction between these characters, finding them too cute for words.

Ben is the ultimate playboy that only needed the right woman to change his ways…and I’m so thrilled that Reese was the one.  Trust me when I say that you do not want to miss watching this unforgettable love story unfold before your eyes.  With the personal demons that they are both exorcising, it was amazing to watch them find each other… even if it was a bumpy road.

My favorite characteristics in a “book boyfriend” – which I can only think of about two of which I have – is that there is a degree of cockiness evened out with realizations of how they hurt others (you know, the whole self guilt trip thing), an amazing sense of compassion and the ability to put someone else first.

I’ve loved every book in the series so far but I haven’t had the chance to read this one yet. I really hope I can soon though! I have no idea what I think my ideal bookfriend would be but Ben probably isn’t it haha. :P

I have to admit I like those sweet bad boys that can’t seem to be tamed
