A girl wakes up on the train tracks, a subway car barreling down on her. With only minutes to react, she hunches down and the train speeds over her. She doesn’t remember her name, where she is, or how she got there. She has a tattoo on the inside of her right wrist of a blackbird inside a box, letters and numbers printed just below: FNV02198. There is only one thing she knows for sure: people are trying to kill her.

On the run for her life, she tries to untangle who she is and what happened to the girl she used to be. Nothing and no one are what they appear to be. But the truth is more disturbing than she ever imagined.

The Maze Runner series meets Code Name Verity, Blackbird is relentless and action-packed, filled with surprising twists.

Throughout Blackbird, Sunny keeps a list called “Things I Know are True”, where she records all the facts she has about her life and who she is. While touring for this book, I’ve been asked about writing and publishing. After seven years of both, here’s what I’ve learned…

Things I Know Are True

–Reading is inspiration. Whenever I feel adrift, it always helps to dive into something I love. Read everything you can–fiction, non fiction, YA, Sci-fi, literary fiction, middle grade. It always reminds me why I write, and I’ve learned so much from great books.

–An idea has to be an obsession for it to be worth writing. I have a lot of ideas for books, but the best ones are ones that persist over time. Eve started with a question: what happens when you find out everything you learned is a lie? I kept going back to that, even trying it out in an adult manuscript before it found it’s way to Eve. By that time it had been with me over a year and a half.

–Find your readers. Your mom may love everything you write, but it’s important to find people who can give you constructive criticism that helps make your book better. A teacher once said “good criticism feels like an arrow hitting its mark”. Listen to criticism that sparks ideas or inspires. Revise accordingly.

–There’s no one way to become an author. You come to writing any way you can. Some friends have taught creative writing or been in MFA programs while they worked on their books. Others had full time jobs and wrote in the mornings before work. I knew if I was going to write I’d need to do it all the time, so I picked up freelance writing gigs along the way, before I sold Eve. Do you. Just by doing that, you’re doing it right.
