Review of Spirit by Brigid Kemmerer

With power comes enemies. Lots of them.

Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies.

He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.

Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too.

With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he’ll have to find someone he can trust…

Gabby NewI have been in love with author Brigid Kemmerer’s the Elementals series since I read the first book and had my mind completely blown. Then I read the sequel, my mind gets blown again and was starting to doubt that she could top how awesome Spark was. Silly me, I was only twenty pages into Spirit before I had to stop reading, exclaim loudly how it was my favorite book and how awesome it was, before sitting down, shutting up and reading. I’ll say right now that I would be surprised, very surprised if somehow the next novel in the series managed to top Spirit. It’s just too awesome.

Spirit tells the story of Hunter (finally!) who has some major issues the first being that he’s just about had it with his mother and grandparents. The second being that Calla is threatening to burn down the entire town to the ground unless Hunter can get her the Guides. The third problem, probably the biggest one, is Kate. Kate who is the new girl in school, Kate who is drop-dead gorgeous and badass too. Kate who has come to town with her mentor, Silver, as Guides sent to kill the Elementals. As Kate is sent to find out more about the Merrick brothers she finds herself growing closer with Hunter and the two find themselves caught in a tragic romance.

I loved finally getting to see Hunter’s story. Throughout the series he has come off as a bad guy with angst issues. The story shows who he is as a person, what his deepest thoughts are and it answers a lot of questions that I had about him. After Hunter meets Kate we also get to see what he does when he’s falling in love and while his romance with Kate is very complicated (as she’s with the Guides and has a hidden agenda) it’s also my favorite romance in the series. The two have cute banter, such romantic scenes together and are two badasses falling in love. Totally perfect!

While reading I really enjoyed the chapters in Kate’s POV for a few reasons and I’ll get to each one. Firstly, I liked that Kate was a lot different from the other defenseless girls that the Merrick brothers got as their love interests. Kate knew what she wanted, had to work to get it and was also brooding. A very independent female character. Secondly, I really liked her. Her personality, her flawless appearance, her way of speaking—all of it just made me instantly like her. The third thing: Silver a.k.a. her extremely dangerous and hot-with-a-capital-H mentor.

Spirit takes readers on an emotional roller coaster as so many things happen in the plot. I came for Hunter and stayed for the non-stop action and heart wrenching romance. Right from the opening chapter to the final chapter where I had to sit down, curl up in a ball and cried and accept that the ending was in fact the ending. Honestly, I’ve never been more emotional than I was while reading Spirit. The writing and the plot and the characters, it all takes your emotions on a rollercoaster that you do not want to get off of.

I would recommend the Elementals series to readers who are looking for a romantic teen fiction with some fantasy thrown into the mix. Readers who are looking for addictive reads will eat these books up and anybody who is just looking for some good YA love will definitely love the Elementals.

Brigid Kemmerer finds the time to write somewhere between caring for her family and working at her day job, but sometimes she ends up mothering her coworkers and managing her family. Storm: The Elemental Series is her first novel.
