Review of Scary School by Derek the Ghost

You think your school’s scary?

Get a load of these teachers:

“Ms. Fang,” an 850-year-old vampire
“Dr. Dragonbreath,” who just might eat you before recess
“Mr. Snakeskin”–science class is so much more fun when it’s taught by someone who’s half zombie
“Mrs. T”–break the rules and spend your detention with a hungry “Tyrannosaurus rex”

Plus

Gargoyles, goblins, and Frankenstein’s monster on the loose
The world’s most frighteningly delicious school lunch

And

The narrator’s an eleven-year-old ghost

Join Charles “New Kid” Nukid as he makes some very Scary friends–including Petunia, Johnny, and Peter the Wolf–and figures out that Scary School can be just as funny as it is spooky

Imagine a world where monsters are real AND go to school alongside humans.  Where accidental deaths are a regular occurrence and the friends you make are the very things that scare you at night.  Enter Scary School, told in the eyes of Derek the Ghost, a boy who died in a fire while in Scary School, and has been wandering the halls since.   With so much drama and different stories that happen at school, who better than to tell us these stories than Derek the Ghost, himself!

Each chapter in Scary School is basically a short story that all merge together in the end to reveal a devious secret.  We are slowly introduced to the various characters found within the pages of Scary School.   In a humorous way, we learn different tidbits about these characters, specifically what possible strengths they have or skills that they excel in, in order to compete, and hopefully win in this year’s Ghoul Games.  (The Ghoul Games being a competition amongst other monster schools competing for the coveted Golden Elephant, as well as a tip to Albania to meet the Monster King!)

The characters in the book are all equally unique.  Because of their uniqueness, they are truly unforgettable.  Don’t even think for a second that everything found in Scary School is all about being serious.  On the contrary!  I found this book to be quite entertaining!  I found myself chuckling out loud all throughout Scary School.  Derek the Ghost is certainly one entertaining character, and one very funny ghost!

I really enjoyed how throughout the book, Derek the Ghost would divulge a little piece of information, only to tell the reader that we will learn more about it in the next book.  One would think that that would be quite annoying, but it really did make me look forward the next installment, which is due out June 26, 2012.  I can’t wait to see what other tales Derek the Ghost has to tell us while strolling (or floating?) the halls of Scary School.

I thought this book was beyond awesome.  I found that the different drawings scattered throughout the pages made the book even more enjoyable!  They helped to open up my imagination more into the world created by Derek Taylor Kent aka Derek the Ghost.   I had my youngest constantly running to me wanting to see what the next picture was, and wanting to know what was happening in the story at that point!

A Middle Grade book that will be enjoyed by all ages!

  2. I really likes Scary School! It was so funny, and there were some things that a younger audience wouldn’t pick up on but would still think is funny, so it’s pretty enjoyable! Great review, I’m glad you enjoyed this book. (:
