Review of Fracture by Megan Miranda with Swag Giveaway

http://platform.twitter.com/widgets/hub.1324331373.html

In a striking debut, readers will be spellbound by this unforgettable story of life and death … and beyond.

Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine-despite the scans that showed significant brain damage. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she’s far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can’t control or explain, Delaney finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her altered brain now predicting death, or causing it?

Then Delaney meets Troy Varga, who recently emerged from a coma with similar abilities. At first she’s reassured to find someone who understands the strangeness of her new existence, but Delaney soon discovers that Troy’s motives aren’t quite what she thought.

Is their gift a miracle, a freak of nature-or something much more frightening?

For fans of best-sellers like Before I Fall and If I Stay, this is a fascinating and heart-rending story about love and friendship and the fine line between life and death.

Megan Miranda is a force to be reckoned with in the literary world (Just putting it out there). Her debut novel “Fracture” is quite simply amazing. It was one of those books where when I finished reading it, I stared up at the ceiling and replayed scenes of the book over in my head so I could relive the book again. Written in the point of view of main character, Delaney Maxwell, Miranda’s writing style flowed from one page to the next, and she took her time in moving the story along at a nice and steady pace. This is a wonderfully written book, explaining how one event can affect everyone around you, and reading about what impact it has on one another.

The book starts off with a vivid and detailed description of Delaney’s drowning at Falcon Lake. The writing totally enveloped me and I was watching the entire scene unfold all around me; with what was happening to Delaney during the event…her thoughts, her feelings…, and with what her friends were feeling and what they were doing to save her.

Miranda does a great job developing the characters all throughout the novel, and who could not love the story of Delaney and Decker. One of the reasons I love reading YA so much is the innocence of youth. How, looking back now, you can pinpoint the tell-tale signs of when someone liked you, but you were totally oblivious to that fact. Well, you know how these types of scenarios are synonymous with YA books. Miranda did not disappoint when writing one into Fracture. You can’t help but smile and say “open your eyes! He’s totally into you, and you are into him…” when you read about the developing relationships in this book.

Not only is this book showing the development of young love, but it also shows the development of relationships between parent and child. About relationships that are not even thought of when it comes to the world of teens; a parent’s relationship with their own parents. This book touches base on so many different topics that readers can relate to somehow. Miranda’s mixture of humour helps the reader come to a better connection with the characters, and helps lighten the mood of some of the scenes.

I found myself laughing out loud at various points throughout the book. One point in particular was when Delaney is leaving Troy’s work, and she has to roll down the window to speak with him, and ends up rolling down every window but his. I found that so hilarious because that honestly, happened to me. I was dropping off friends for a night of debauchery, and forgot to ask about something. I had enough time to roll down the passenger side window to shout out the question, but I couldn’t figure out which button was for that particular window. I started to panic because they were getting further away, and so I started button mashing, which resulted in a window symphony. It was pretty embarrassing, but thinking back now…it was also pretty hilarious.

You can really tell that Miranda took her time in researching the details she incorporated into the book in order to make the story more realistic and believable. Every little detail felt like it was strategically placed. I found myself getting sucked deeper and deeper into this world she created. Miranda’s writing style is so beautiful and so full of emotion, with an equally beautiful ending.

This is a story of how Delaney’s world is crashing all around her, and where she finds the strength to push through, a story of courage, perseverance, determination, and strength.
