Review of Anna Dressed In Blood by Kendare Blake

Just your average boy-meets-girl, girl-kills-people story…

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until his gruesome murder by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn’t expect anything outside of the ordinary: move, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, but now stained red and dripping blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

And she, for whatever reason, spares his life.

O-M-G…!  Why did I wait so long to read this incredible book!  Seriously!  I want to smack myself upside the head for even waiting this long to pick it up off the bookshelf.  Anna Dressed In Blood was ahhh-mazing!  It was perfection personified.  It was everything that a true scary story should be…with a dash of romance.

We are introduced to a fantastic character named Cas…Theseus Cassio to be exact (wicked name in my honest opinion) who has followed in the footsteps of his now deceased father as a ghost hunter.  Cas travels around the globe ridding the world of violent ghosts that kill people.

What brings him to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada?  An extremely violent ghost who is lovingly known by the town folk as Anna Dressed In Blood.  When Anna was alive, she was a sixteen year old girl back in the 50’s, who was apparently heading to her high school dance.  She was violently murdered before she even had a chance to get there…in her lovely dress of white.

We follow Cas as he attempts to make connections amongst the teens in his new school, and try to get as much information as he can about his new hunt.  And it’s through these connections that he finally comes face to face with Anna.  And Anna is not your average ghost girl.  This chick is hard core dudes.  She can eviscerate someone with only her ghostly hands!   The descriptions of the violence this chick can hand out is graphic and gloriously gory… throw in some epically awesome plot twists, and there you have it my friends…the best dang ghost story to date.

As I was reading Anna Dressed In Blood, different horror movies flicked through my mind…and it made me smile.  I lurve me a good horror movie!  It’s like pulling teeth trying to find anyone to watch them with me!  I’m not talking about just straight slasher flicks…I’m talking about movies that mess with your mind!  The ones that make you question the sounds you hear in the middle of the night, makes you do a double take when you catch a glimpse of a shadow from the corner of your eye.  This was what this book did to me!

In my mind’s eye I could picture bits of Paranormal Activity, Poltergeist, some American Horror Story, Candy Man, Jeeper’s Creepers…oh man, I could just keep going!  The best of the best of the best is thrown into here, and my mind was freaking me out!

Not only did this book freak me out, but it had multiple laugh out loud moments.  The part where Cas is asking Morfran if his speech about being Obeahed by an Obeahman was like how Smurfs say they are smurfing smurfed?  I had to round everyone up in the house, and read that part to them.  I was cracking up!  And any story that brings up references to Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the Ghost Busters,  Bruce Lee, the Hulk, and Neo from The Matrix is an instant WIN!

Author Kendare Blake is a phenomenal story teller.  Every detail described in the book was perfect.  Every image seared into my mind, only to draw them back up while lying awake in the middle of the night.  I mean, seriously!  Who does not LOVE a good ghost story.  I’m sure we all have ones that are passed along from one person to the next in the town/city you live in.  What made this book even more fantastic was that it was set in … wait for it… Canada!  Thunder Bay, Ontario to be exact.  I felt like I had a connection with the book because I used to date a guy from Thunder Bay many, many moons ago…ok lame connection but still!

An unforgettable story, combined with unforgettable characters, and an epic showdown makes Anna Dressed In Blood a story that will leave readers screaming for more.  Eerily romantic, deliciously scary, Anna Dress In Blood is an instant favorite.
