Review of Altered by Jennifer Rush

When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

We were in no way paid for our opinions **

The first thing that made me want to read Altered by author Jennifer Rush was the cover. Ermagerd, Batmern, don’t deny that that is such an attractive cover, it made me think: Damn. And after reading the description I then thought: Not bad and began to read. There’s one thing that readers should know when before they pick up Altered: There will be points when it will blow you away. Like a kite on a windy spring day. (Who said that she could be a poet and just not know it?).

Altered takes place from the POV (point of view) of main character Anna whose father works for the Branch, a group devoted to their project that includes four teenage boys: Sam, Cas, Nick and Trev. Each one of them is incredibly attractive, each one of them has their own strengths and weaknesses, but none of them have ever managed to escape the Branch. Or so Anna thinks, one surprise visit from the Heads of the Branch and suddenly Anna finds herself fleeing the Lab with the four boys.

Anna learns that everything she knew might just be a complete lie, she discovers things. Bad things. Things that aren’t supposed to be possible, things that involve her mother, father, the tattoos/scars each boy seems to have and learns of a life that she may have lived before… one she can’t remember. The Branch will stop at nothing to get Anna and the boys back, and while she proves to be a problem for the group of runaways, something keeps them protecting her. Something controlling them against their wills to protect her. But things aren’t all that bad, despite being confronted with guns on a daily basis; Anna has managed to fall in love with Sam.

The one thing that I liked most about Altered was the smoking gun action scenes. They had a total Call of Duty feel. Not only are there these intense scenes that involve one of the drop dead attractive boys always blowing somebody’s brains onto the floor, but that they also felt realistic. You don’t exactly know if any of the characters are safe during those scenes, and as the novel progresses you do learn that the Branch will quite literally do anything they have to, to obtain their property.

Each character felt unique, however I will admit that I was getting them a bit confused with the characters from the Elemental series by Brigid Kemmerer since there were similar names and the characters with those names seemed to have similar personalities. I feel like I should mention that there is a mole in the group, just because that seems to spice things up more. The group (which consists of the four boys and Anna) constantly goes to find answers, only to have the Branch waiting for them.

My only problem with the novel was that it lost my interest whenever it wasn’t having either: A) An action packed chapter. B) character development and C) Plot changing points. This is one of the novels that have those few down points that fall a bit flat and cause your interest to move elsewhere. But when that wasn’t happening, the story does get easy to be caught up in.

I would recommend Altered to fans of action, thrillers and romance. Readers who enjoy reading about macho-men and not-so-damsels in distress will fall hard for Altered.
