Review & Giveaway of The Future Of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler

It’s 1996, and Josh and Emma have been neighbors their whole lives. They’ve been best friends almost as long – at least, up until last November, when Josh did something that changed everything. Things have been weird between them ever since, but when Josh’s family gets a free AOL CD in the mail, his mom makes him bring it over so that Emma can install it on her new computer. When they sign on, they’re automatically logged onto their Facebook pages. But Facebook hasn’t been invented yet. And they’re looking at themselves fifteen years in the future.

By refreshing their pages, they learn that making different decisions now will affect the outcome of their lives later. And as they grapple with the ups and downs of what their futures hold, they’re forced to confront what they’re doing right – and wrong – in the present.

Why did I love this book so much? Could it be because most everything was sending me back in time and reminiscing about days gone by? Every song mentioned took me back to a giggle worthy time in my life. Little details that were brought up sent me back in my own personal time machine and relived the rockin’ 90’s again. I loved the 90’s. Seriously! The music back then was just…just…awesome! Days before wireless internet where you had to unplug the phone in order to plug in your computer to go online…totally remember that. That moment when you’re on the internet, and someone in the house decides to pick up the phone and use it, which in turn made you lose your internet connection? Priceless…

The writing styles of Asher and Mackler is what brought this book to life for me. Not only was the interaction between all the characters unforgettable, but the descriptions of the events, the surroundings, the era was what made the story more real. I totally and completely devoured this book. I flew through this book like there was no tomorrow. When the time came for the story to near it’s end, I wondered where the time went, and how it was possible that I could’ve finished this book already! That’s how engrossed I was. I didn’t want to eat, I didn’t want to get out of bed! All I wanted to know was what could possible happen next, and what could main characters Emma and Josh do next to change the outcome of their future!

I found it so hilarious how just the little details of Facebook, that we are all used to, was completely foreign to them! Like “status” and “friend request” and “poke”. I giggled pretty good when Netflix+Glee=my life, and Emma didn’t knowhat Netflix or Glee was. I loved it! You could really see while you’re reading The Story Of Us how much work both Asher and Mackler worked to try and make Facebook and the slang/words/shows that we know now, seem foreign to the past.

What I really enjoyed about this story is how we got to see the Story of Emma and Josh. I loved how the back story between these two characters were incorporated into the story, and how we get to watch their relationship develop, both good and bad. I think the reason why I flew through this book was that I just wanted to know how it would all end. I needed to know how things were going to turn out. And I wanted to see just how much trouble Emma would cause by her need for happiness and perfection in her future.

I believe readers both younger and older will enjoy the different aspects of this story, and will find enjoyment in reading how people in the past relate to our technology now. A thoroughly enjoyable read!
