If you could read my mind, you wouldn’t be smiling.

Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. But hidden beneath the straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can’t turn off.

Second-guessing every move, thought, and word makes daily life a struggle, and it doesn’t help that her lifelong friends will turn toxic at the first sign of a wrong outfit, wrong lunch, or wrong crush. Yet Sam knows she’d be truly crazy to leave the protection of the most popular girls in school. So when Sam meets Caroline, she has to keep her new friend with a refreshing sense of humor and no style a secret, right up there with Sam’s weekly visits to her psychiatrist.

Caroline introduces Sam to Poet’s Corner, a hidden room and a tight-knit group of misfits who have been ignored by the school at large. Sam is drawn to them immediately, especially a guitar-playing guy with a talent for verse, and starts to discover a whole new side of herself. Slowly, she begins to feel more “normal” than she ever has as part of the popular crowd . . . until she finds a new reason to question her sanity and all she holds dear.

I’m s always open to read a new book, so bring out on

  2. I’ve never read a YA book with a character that has obsessional OCD. Especially one that is keeping it secret. I went through a period of time in early junior high where I displayed a lot of OCD symptoms, but thankfully I grew out of it and I didn’t have violent thoughts or anything like that, but it was still a little scary to me. I’d be very interested to read about this girl and how it turns out for her :)

I loved Time Between Us but never got around to read the sequel. Contemporary YA is my favorite genre, so I’m glad that Tamara decided to write a book that fits in this category! ;)

I am dying to read this book on the one hand because so many people whose opinions I trust have been absolutely blown away by it. On the other hand, I really want to read it because of the subject matter. I have struggled with some OCD myself in my life (though nothing close to what it sounds like Samantha goes through), and I know how damaging it can be. I have always had a desire – a drive – to have everything perfect, mostly when I was younger and needed to get perfect grades and be the perfect child, etc. I know how much stress I brought on myself and put my body through (eating disorder), and how miserable I often was. Now that I’m a parent, I see my son having some of the traits I had and it scares me. He’s in first grade and gets upset if he gets a 100 +2 on his spelling test instead of the 100 +3 that’s possible. I am doing my best to let him know IT IS OKAY NOT TO BE PERFECT EVERY DAY, EVERY TIME, IN EVERY THING!!! But it’s hard because it’s not like I’m completely over it myself. Anyway, that’s why I want to read this book :) Plus Tamara is an amazing writer!

I am not OCD but I do have bipolar II. It will be interesting to read a book where the character has a mental illness.
