Jessie Darker goes to high school during the day, but at night she helps with the family investigation business. Cheating husbands and stolen inheritances? They’re your girls—but their specialty is a bit darker. Zombie in your garage? Pesky Poltergeist living in your pool? They’ll have the problem solved in a magical minute. For a nominal fee, of course...

When gorgeous new client, Lukas Scott, saunters into the office requesting their help to find a stolen box, it sounds like a simple case—until the truth comes out. The box is full of Sin.

Seven deadly ones, in fact.

They’ve got five days to recapture the Sins before they're recalled by the box, taking seven hijacked human bodies with them. Easy peasy—except for one thing...

There’s a spell that will allow the Sins to remain free, causing chaos forever. When the key ingredient threatens the life of someone she knows, Jessie must make the ultimate choice between love and family—or lose everything.

“So not your biggest fan at the moment,” I said, closing the office door behind me. The run off from my jeans had soaked my sneakers pretty good. With each step, I gave a slight squishing noise accompanied by an annoying squeak against the old tile floor.

From across the room, Mom stared. “What happened to you?”

“It attacked me.” Tossing my bag on the couch, I sank into her chair and made sure to grind my butt into the cushion. Got it nice and wet. I was all about sharing the love—and right now, the love was soggy.

She laughed, waving a folder in my direction. “Surely you’re overreacting. It was one little zombie. They don’t attack people.”

“I’m serious, Ma. It tried to drown me. And the client assaulted me with ugly footwear. As far as punishments go, I’d say we’re probably square. I’ve learned my lesson.”

“You’re serious?” Amused expression now replaced by concern, she crossed the room and leaned over her desk to get a better look at me.

“As a coronary.” Once I was sure the chair had sponged up all it could, I stood and huffed past her. Pulling at my favorite T-shirt—the word Fate inside a blood red heart, is a four letter word on the back—I said, “Child welfare would not be happy to hear you tried to feed your only child to a walking corpse…”

“But why would it attack? Did you provoke it?” Folding her arms, she frowned. “Insult it, perhaps?”

I winked at her. “Provoke it? Sure. I went and wiggled my ass in front of it yelling lunch just to see what’d happen.” I’d called it Stinky, but that didn’t count as an insult. Something couldn’t be considered an insult if it was true, right?

Right eyebrow twitching, she fought against a smile. “But you’re okay, right? No bites, broken bones, head injuries, possessions…?”

I smiled and did a little twirl. “All in one piece and still me.”

Mom had a checklist she went through at the end of each job. I was known for taking almost as much damage as I inflicted.

“Oh, and you’re probably going to get a call from the client. I sorta smashed her fence in the process.”

Mom groaned. “I told you to be more careful.”

“It’s not like I tried to break anything.”

“Something tells me you didn’t try hard enough not to break anything, either.”

“In my defense, it wasn’t a simple trap and slap…”

“We can’t afford this.” She reached down and pulled a white envelope out from under a stack of papers. “This is the bill for that Mercedes you smashed.”

“Oh! So not my fault. How was I supposed to know that Spring Heel was gonna land on the car? If it makes you feel any better, I think he was aiming for my head…”

“If you keep this up, we won’t even be able to afford the rent.”

She was right, of course, and it made me feel horrible. “I’m sorry. I guess I’m a wrecking ball wrapped in blue jeans. Take my cut of this job and put it toward the repairs. Keep my paycheck for the next month, too.” A good start, but it didn’t feel like enough. Sure, it would cover the damages—I hoped—but I felt guilty about upsetting her. The bills that were piling up kept her awake at night. This was only going to make things worse. We got a fair amount of business, but the overhead in our line of work was sky high.

As much as I hated the idea, I knew what would cheer her up. “I’ll even throw in pet possessions for the next month.”

HOW FAR MUST AN ANGEL FALL TO FIND HIS DESTINY?

Having witnessed one too many senseless deaths, Nikolai, a disillusioned Reaper 3rd Class, resigns his commission with the Angel Forces after a tedious century of gathering souls.

Immediately, another division recruits him with the promise of a more rewarding career, and issues his initial assignments: To bring down a few very dangerous threats to the human race. In the process, Nikolai falls in love with one of his targets Hope Matheson, a woman who will lead thousands astray.

Caught between conflicting agendas, Nikolai chooses to fall from his celestial state and become mortal in order to circumvent angel law and be with her. But for angels and humans alike, things are not always as they appear. Still a target, the threat against Hope s life intensifies.

Now, in order to save her, Nikolai must rally the last remnants of his failing supernatural abilities to prevent her assassination, as well as the destruction of an entire city by a nuclear terrorist strike.

But his time and power are running out...

Terminus is a perspective-altering saga that delves into ageless themes of redemption, destiny, and the eternal power of love.

You’re home alone, there’s a fire! Top 3 things you’d grab and save from the fire.

My family, my pets, my cello

Top 3 Favorite authors (dead or alive) and why:

C.S. Lewis –A genius, and a master story teller

Dean Koontz – beautiful writing, with a spiritual bent

St. Paul – His epistles are truly inspired and life-changing

Top 3 Favorite snacks while writing and why:

1. Snickers- no need for explanation

2. Bananas: satisfies sweet tooth, filling

3. Water (not really a snack, but always there.)

Top 3 Favorite books that inspired you to write and why:

1. The Bible – Not only does it have life-giving truth, the stories are epic!

2. The Chronicles of Narnia – Talking lions, allegory, unfettered imagination? What’s not to love?

3. The Dead Zone – loved the sense of history woven into an bold supernatural/sf tale. Stephen King writes whatever he wants because he’s such a great storyteller. I hope to be able to do that as well.

Top 3 favorite composers to listen to while writing and why:

1. Bach is inspired genius. I’m convinced he intuitively wrote with some divine code which he was either conscious or not conscious of.

2. Brahms’ music is deeply moving and transcendent in its artistry, construction and complexed-simplicity—it’s an amazing union of old and new.

3. Tchaikovsky’s music is in a word beautiful.

Now, all this can stir my emotions so much that it actually interferes with my writing. I can’t simply listen to it in the background and not be moved. Sometimes I have to stop writing, or stop listening because I can’t do both at the same time. It’s complicated.

Top 3 favorite movies of all time and why:

1. Airforce One – Harrison Ford in a heroic role, a president who kicks bad guy butt!

2. Bicentennial Man – Truly entertaining, epic, and moving. Like a great book. (It was a story by Isaac Asimov.) I still tear up, thinking of the ending.

3. Meet Joe Black – Another deeply moving movie that makes me think a lot more about life and death.

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why:

1. Germany – I’d love to visit the places where some of my favorite composers lived, wrote, and performed.

2. China: The Great Wall, The Forbidden City. So much history, and I’d love to just experience being there

3. England: I’m a bit of an anglophile.

CBS News described DARKROOM as a book with “action, political intrigue and well-rounded characters…a novel that thriller fans will devour.”

Many of Graham’s readers blame him for sleepless nights, arriving to work late, neglected dishes and family members, and not allowing them to put the book down.

His short story THE DOOR’S OPEN won the HarperCollins Authonomy Competition (Christmas 2010.)

Publishers Weekly described BEYOND JUSTICE as: “A riveting legal thriller…breaking new ground with a vengeance…demonically entertaining and surprisingly inspiring.”

PRELUDE

THREE SECONDS. THAT WAS ALL.

The man in the black leather jacket had looked down for just three seconds to read a text message on his phone. And in the interim, his five-year-old Houdini of a stepdaughter Chloe had unstrapped herself, climbed out of her car seat, and slipped out of sight—nowhere near the doorway of the office where he was to meet his contact.

Just three lousy seconds!

His mouth went dry.

He scanned the streets, sidewalk, between cars, to the left then right then a quick three-sixty. Despite the thorough sweep, which took all of two seconds, he didn’t see her.

“Chloe!”

She didn’t answer, but he spotted her. Way down the street, her auburn pigtails bouncing with each step.

“Chloe! Wait!” He slammed shut the back door of his Focus. Didn’t bother to lock it.Ran up the sidewalk—fast. But the little stinker was fixated on a black cat luring her across the imaginary border that separated thegentrified arts district of Carleton Village and the slums of East Brentwood.

The cat bolted around the corner at the sound of the man’s agitated shouts. Both hands outstretched, Chloe giggled and ran even faster.

“Kitty!”

He nearly tripped over an uneven seam in the sidewalk as he ran, his heart going faster than his feet.

A pair of SDPD squad cars with flashing red and blue beacons raced past Birch and came to a screeching halt somewhere around the corner of Lamont.

The little girl turned the same corner and vanished behind the red bricks of the apartment building. Straight onto Lamont.

“Stop, Chloe!” He’d gained but was still several steps behind.

The sound of a policeman shouting filled his head. Could things get any worse? He ran even harder.

It all happened within a matter of seconds.

Three lousy seconds.

That's what it took for him to round the corner and make out the figure fleeing the pimped-out Honda Civic that had crashed into a hydrant. The gunman shot at the cops, who now stood behind the open doors of their angled cars.

The man in the black leather jacket leapt at Chloe.

“Get down!”

Over his shout, the shouts of the police, the screams of frightened pedestrians, came a deafening pop! whose impact toppled him.

Chloe screamed.

A sudden chill overtook him as a crimson pool expanded around his face, now planted on the cold concrete sidewalk. He tried to speak, stretched his fingers towards Chloe. Felt nothing but the cold pumping though his entire body.

Life didn’t flash before his eyes.

He heard more gunshots.

The last thing he saw was Chloe lurching back, her pigtails flailing to the side. As though in slow motion, she was falling.

Falling...

He never saw her hit the ground.

1

AS A REAPER OF THE THIRD LEGION, Nikolai—Nick, as he preferred to be called these days—had attended to more human deaths over the last thousand years than he cared to. Countless lives and memories snuffed out like the wick of a candle. It had all become routine, meaningless.

Vanitasvanitatum.

The ability to traverse the entire planet in the blink of a human eye had long grown commonplace, its charm lost somewhere between King Malcolm II’s victory in The Battle of Mortlach and Guttenberg’s invention of moveable type. These days he spent most of his time assigned to the northern hemisphere, one of the least active territories on earth.

As for leaving the planet, he typically only did that on days when he escorted a soul to the Terminus.

A day like today.

Nick waited while the OR surgeon continued trying to save the little girl from multiple gunshot wounds.

“My husband was killed,” the beautiful woman standing in the door said, her voice breaking. “She’s all I have.”

“We can’t keep her going like this,” the surgeon said gently.

“She’s not even five.

“I’m truly sorry. But it’s time to let her go.”

“No!” The mother rushed forward, knocking over a metal tray and all its equipment as she reached out to her daughter. The nurse caught hold of her arms and held her back.

“Please, don’t let the last few moments of your daughter’s life end like this. Let her go with some dignity,” the surgeon said.

Nick tuned out the mother’s voice as she got hold of herself. Having to watch this sort of thing was perhaps the worst part of his punishment. Far worse than his demotion.Worse than when he was a guardian a millennium ago. He’d seen tens of thousands die horrific deaths on battlegrounds in the physical realm—even intervened and partaken in sanctioned kills himself. But at least he’d been helping rid the planet of those who’d deserved it.

This was much worse.

Nick’s reflection didn’t show in the mirror, but in it he could see the surgeon calling the time of death and switching off the EKG machine, the little girl lying pale and still, the lovely mother weeping.

And now the warm golden light that only Nick could perceive filled the room, enveloping the body. It was about to happen.

The little girl’s ethereal form sat up and separated from her expired mortal body. She looked to her mother, confused.

“Mama? Why’re you crying?”

Her mother didn’t respond. How could she?

Callous as Nick’s heart had grown over the years, these moments always wrenched it.

“It’s okay, little girl.”

She turned to him and stepped off the operating table. Had she been older, she might have reacted with panic as most do when they see the blood on the sheets, the surroundings, the grief-stricken loved ones standing over their body. But she was too young to understand. She smiled and tried to touch her mother’s head. Her hand passed right through it. She giggled and did it again.

“That’s funny, Mommy.”

Nick hated this. He should never have to take a child this young and innocent to the Terminus. He forced a smile and approached her.

“What’s your name, love?”

“Chloe.” Again she giggled, now prancing around the OR passing her hands through cabinets, walls, chairs, her mother. “Funny!”

Nick put his hand on her shoulder and her smile faded. This was the part he hated most. An expression common to people much older than Chloe replaced it. A look of recognition.Finality.

She’s too young.

She looked back to her mother, still weeping over the empty shell that had been Chloe’s body. Then she turned back to Nick with tears in her eyes.

“It’s time to leave, isn’t it?”

“Come, say goodbye to your mum. She’ll feel it, and it’ll make her happy—if only for a moment.”

“Okay.” She reached up, put her tiny hand in Nick’s. Like an electrical current, a twinge that originated from the core of her spirit flowed into his. By now he should have been used to it, but he wasn’t.

“Come on, then.”

Chloe didn’t seem to pay any mind to the fact that her mother could neither see nor hear her. She leaned over and kissed her mother’s auburn hair, tried to stroke it without her hand passing through.

“It’s okay, Mommy.”

And in that moment, her mother stopped crying, sniffled, and looked up, her eyes incongruously hopeful.

“Sweetie?”

Chloe choked back a little sob and tried to wrap her arms around her mother’s neck.

“I love you, Mommy. Have to go bye-bye now.”

Her mother blinked. Nick waited a couple of seconds, then gave Chloe’s shoulder a gentle squeeze.

“The last bit, love. Go on.”

She nodded, understanding what he meant—spirits always seemed to know this instinctively when first separated from their bodies. Placing her forehead against her mother’s, she joined her with shut eyes and poured out the very last of her mortal memories, the essence of their all too brief life together.

No matter how many times Tamara had tried to explain the human need for closure, to Nick’s mind it was still sentimental. Nonetheless, he waited patiently for Chloe’s spirit to converge for a moment with that of her mother’s.

Her mother smiled, her eyes closed. It was only a moment, but she seemed at peace. When she began to cry again, Chloe kissed the top of her head and returned to Nick, sadness briefly tugging the corners of her mouth down. Then her eyes and face began to glow.

She took Nick’s hand.

Her mother’s tears and sobs penetrated the emotional barrier he tried to forge. His hand began to glow—how simple it would have been to use his healing ability and restore the little girl’s mortal life. Just one touch.

But it was not allowed.

Nick had learned—the hard way, in England, a century ago. But what good was such an ability if it could not be used where needed?

What’s the point of my existence, for that matter?

He started walking out of the room, an entirely human and unnecessary habit he’d developed from mingling with mortals over the years.

“Ready, Chloe?”

“I miss her.”

“She’ll miss you a lot more.”

“How come?”

“Because mortals don’t know what it’s like on this side.” For them, time was a driving tyrant: linear, merciless, flowing in one and only one direction. Why would anyone want to go through a short pittance of a life with all its sorrows—seventy, maybe ninety years—only to grow feeble and stupid towards the end? At least Chloe had been spared that.

Yet something about this premature departure troubled him unreasonably. He’d reaped the souls of children before, never liked doing it, but in Chloe’s case the pain was quite a bit more acute.

As memories from the past surfaced, Nick without thinking released Chloe’s hand and floated freely in the room. Before he knew it, he found himself standing beside her mother. The auburn hair falling over emerald eyes shimmering with tears made her look achingly beautiful.

Her weeping subsided. Her lips moved ever so subtly.

She was praying.

Again without thinking, Nick stretched out his hand, gently reached toward her face with his fingertips, taking pains not to touch her so she wouldn’t perceive his presence.

Or would she?

She gasped with a start, her face lighting up.

Damn. Nick had inadvertently touched her hair and revealed himself.

Idiot!

He instantly slipped out of her perception. It had lasted only a second, but she had felt his presence. Seen his face.

She bolted to her feet and looked around the room, returned to her seat when she saw no one.

“Let’s go, Chloe.” Nick took her hand.

“What happened?”

“She’ll be all right.” He led Chloe to the door, hoping he hadn’t just lied to her.

Chloe turned back to see her mother, waved, and said, “Bye-bye, Mama.”

Nick, against his better judgment, turned and looked at the mother too. Any trace of that brief moment of euphoria mortals experience the first time they encounter an angel had been replaced by deep grief. He’d seen such pain far too often, but this was the strongest he’d felt it himself in a long time.

Human emotions.

As though they were his own.

He hated it. Hated the fact that he was starting to feel them again.

They were alien, perverse, just...wrong!

With a shudder, he held Chloe’s hand and crossed the divide.

Dez Cross has problems. She’s almost eighteen and on the verge of losing her mind thanks to the drug Denazen used to enhance her abilities. People close to her have turned their back on the underground and are now fighting for the wrong side. And then there’s Kale… Things couldn’t get any worse.

Until of course, they do. Denazen is about to start a new trial—this one called Domination—and it works. But that means out with the old and in with the new. The order has been given to terminate all remnants of the second trial—including Dez. The good news is that there’s a survivor from the original trial. A woman who’s blood may hold the cure for the second generation of Supremacy kid’s defect. But the underground Sixes aren’t the only ones who know about her….

Cross is willing to throw everything he has to keep Dez from getting the cure—including the one thing that might tear her apart from the inside out.

** This title was provided to us by the Publisher for an honest review.
We were in no way paid for our opinions **

This series just keeps getting better and better! Once again, author Jus Accardo has done it again. She grabbed my attention and kept a hold of it until the very end! There were so many shock worthy moments that left me reeling.

The story picks up a few months after the end of book 2. Kale has given himself to Dez’s father to save Dez’s life. In true Marshal Cross style, he only wanted Kale, and couldn’t care less if Dez was cured of the poison that was coursing through her body. Not a day has gone by where Kale wasn’t the first thing on Dez’s mind, and life without him is pretty unbearable. All she wants to do is go and find Kale and bring him back home before the people at Denazen (aka her after) does something horrible to him. But time is ticking for the Supremacy kids and the Underground are determined to find as many as they can, before they die whether it be due to the drug that caused all this, or by the hands of Denazen.

Even though going to a party is the last thing that Dez wants to do, but it’s at one of these parties that Dez has one of the most shocking moments of her life. Not only does she run into her crazy ass sister, Kiernan, but it seems that Kale is now her boy toy, and ready to kill Dez. Apparently, Kiernan goes by Roz, and Dez is apparently Kiernan…or so Kale believes. He also believes that Dez is the reason why he has lost all him memories, which include his past, his friends, and his family. How can this be you ask? Oh the power of these Sixes… Thanks to a Six at Denazen, they have successfully warped Kale’s mind to believe what I just listed! And he has forgotten everything else…the Underground, family, … Dez. And it also appears that thanks to a new drug called Domination, which is a new trial version of the Supremacy drug, Kale’s power has become even more powerful, and he’s able to control it now.

With both Kale (Denazen) and Dez (the Underground) rounding up Supremacy kids from all over, it’s all a question of who will get to them first to warn them of what’s happening to them and to save them from Denazen and give them a chance at life. But there is one Supremacy kid who is of most interest to Dez and to Marshal Cross, and it’s a race to see who will reach him first.

Tremble by Jus Accardo ripped by heart apart at times! It also had me literally laughing out loud and the conversations and the scenarios. I will never get tired of Dez’s fire cracker attitude. I love her fierce loyalty to Kale and to the Underground, and I love how, even when the going got extremely tough, she kept on keeping on. She had her eyes set on a goal, and was going to follow it through to the end…regardless of how many people disagreed with her.

In this installment, the Kale that we all know and love, is more or less gone. He has been transformed into this jerk of a guy who was quick to kill and full of hate. I can’t tell you how many times his words and actions felt like a punch in the gut…even though they were directed at Dez. I felt for the girl! And I was wanting to put my hands into the book and grab Kale and shake the crap outta him and tell him to snap out of it! Unfortunately, he probably would’ve zapped the crap outta me and I would have been eviscerated! Eeep!

We see even more of just how evil Marshal Cross is in this installment. And this guy is freaking nuts! No priorities, except anything that would benefit him. And we witness his craziness time and time again. We see just how heartless this douche of a father is. He pissed me off over and over again.

And don’t even get me started on the twist provided by daddy dearest himself. I believe my mouth was wide open, as were my eyes, when this tiny tidbit was revealed.

Page after pager, chapter after chapter, I was totally and completely engrossed in this book. I am seriously in dire need to the next book! I have so many unanswered questions that I know will be answered in the next installment! Fans of this series will completely devour Tremble by Jus Accardo. Readers looking for a read full of action and emotion should definitely check out this series.

Yet the smiles of her picture-perfect family are cracking and her sister could be dying. Now Tess has to fill a new role: the strong one. Because if she doesn’t hold it together, who will?

She’s been six different people in six different places: Madeline in Ohio, Isabelle in Missouri, Olivia in Kentucky . . . But now that she’s been transplanted to rural Louisiana, she has decided that this fake identity will be her last.

Witness Protection has taken nearly everything from her. But for now, they’ve given her a new name, Megan Rose Jones, and a horrible hair color. For the past eight months, Meg has begged her father to answer one question: What on earth did he do – or see – that landed them in this god-awful mess? Meg has just about had it with all the Suits’ rules — and her dad’s silence. If he won’t help, it’s time she got some answers for herself.

But Meg isn’t counting on Ethan Landry, an adorable Louisiana farm boy who’s too smart for his own good. He knows Meg is hiding something big. And it just might get both of them killed. As they embark on a perilous journey to free her family once and for all, Meg discovers that there’s only one rule that really matters — survival.

The Rules for Disappearing by author Ashley Elston was a fun read that kept me wondering for the entire novel. The description sounded very interesting and by the time I began reading I found myself comparing it to mystery/thriller novels I read in the past. The Rules for Disappearing is a read that was stuffed with romance, mystery and drama. Do I hope for a sequel? Yes, yes I do.

The Rules for Disappearing tells the story of main character “Megan Rose Jones” whose family is in the Witness Protection Program. Her sixth move has given her a new name, hair and eye color and a new life in Louisiana. Meg’s mother has become an alcoholic, her little sister “Mary” (Who Meg just likes to call Teeny) hasn’t acted like a kid since they entered the Witness Protection program and Meg has no idea why they were put into the Witness Protection Program in the first place, but she is intent on finding out.

When Meg meets Ethan, a smart, funny and cute country boy—Meg knows that the only way to uncover what happened to put her family in the Suits’ protection is to find out herself. There are rules that Meg has put in place to keep her family safe from whoever is after them and another move. However all these rules seem to be broken as Meg and Ethan grow closer together. She knows that his being involved with her puts him in grave danger, but Ethan knows that Meg isn’t who she says she is and that she has a big secret. The two begin to search for the truth, but when they find it Meg becomes aware just how dangerous her family’s situation really is.

I really liked the main character Meg. I really liked that there was a real mystery behind who she was before the Witness Protection Program and having to guess at who she really is/was. Apart from that, I also liked the way that Meg acted as an older sister. She looked out for her little sister and would do anything to keep Teeny safe. I admired that. As the novel progressed you also get to find out that Meg has repressed memories from her original life before the Suits and the Witness Protection Program that lead to uncovering the mystery of what happened to her family.

I loved Ethan. He’s described as a cute and funny, but also dedicated to helping Meg. At first, he came off as a bit annoying but as circumstances push him and Meg closer together I started to fall in love with him. With Ethan also came Ethan’s sister who adds some high school conflict into the novel. Suddenly Meg is a target at her high school and this adds a ton of drama into the mystery/thriller mix that The Rules for Disappearing has. The cast of characters in The Rules for Disappearing are memorable and all add to each other.

When we do find out the reason behind why Meg is in the Witness Protection Program the story dose develop a quick pace. Suddenly the Suits pose a threat, nobody can be trusted and Meg becomes paranoid. Before this, the story does have a bit of a slow pace, but it’s nothing that would make anybody irate. I personally found that it added to the mystery of the novel. After Meg’s discovery is made the novel turns into a total thriller and doesn’t lose pace at all. That ending too—I totally want more.

The Rules for Disappearing is totally Stacy Kade’s Project Paper Doll novel meets Kate Brian’s Shadowlands. Fans of mystery will devour this read as will readers who are looking for a novel that has romance and thrills all in one book.

This isn't a deep book about first loves or self-discovery. If you want a book like that, I'd be happy to recommend one, but I don't have that kind of story to tell. Instead my story is about rash decisions and finding out that your dream guy is bad in bed. It's the story of when I finally went skinny dipping, and how my life was never the same again. Oh, and it's also the story of my freshman year of college and realizing Mr. Right might have been there all along.

Jude has spent the whole twenty one years of his life running. From what, he wasn't quite sure. His mother tried to keep him safe; a low profile, a constant move on the horizon, a week's pay always stashed away. She tried to instill in him that he was special somehow, though would never elaborate. He never felt different. He was so completely normal and vanilla that he wondered if it had all been in her head. But then she was murdered and all he saw was a running silhouette of a man as his mother said three final words to him. Three words that changed his whole being.

Never stop running…

Now he's semi-settled into a big town. The college is huge and easy to blend into. It's been three months since he had to move because 'Biloxi', as he calls the man who killed his mother, found him once more.

Then Marley, an eighteen year old girl who is as infuriating as she is blissfully ignorant of her gorgeousness, smashes into his car with hers. Then smashes into his life as he realizes that whatever it is he has that Biloxi wants, she has it, too. And now, they're after them both.

** We received this product as a free sample for an honest review
We were in no way paid for our opinions **

With ebooks becoming more and more popular, especially with imprints from Publishers that specialize in electronic books, having an eReader is a huge advantage for readers everywhere. And now that we (Chapter by Chapter) are “officially” book bloggers where we review books on our website, the importance of an eReader escalated! A lot of the ARC reviews are available as electronic copies through a couple of websites for reviewers. The eARCs also come from various touring sites and from the authors and Publishers themselves.

I, personally, have been strictly a Kindle kind of girl. I had a first gen. Kindle before eReaders were even a noticeable thing! People would stop me at work and ask me what I was carrying and were so curious about having the ability to read books on one device. But I couldn’t read it in the dark, and the typing keys and page turn buttons were starting to stick, and I was getting a little frustrated.

But then I thought it was time for an upgrade. I wanted something similar to my iPad, but not my iPad. Something smaller like the size of my Kindle. So my hubby bought me an Acer 7” Android Tablet. Hated it. It lasted a few months until I simply reverted back to my old Kindle. I vowed never to try anything else again, and strictly stick with the Kindle product.

My hubby surprised me with a Kindle Paperwhite once it became available in Canada. And omg did I ever fall in love with it! It was exactly what I wanted, AND I was able to read in the dark, which was a total bonus! And then, I received a most awesome email. The kind people over at Kobo were willing to offer me their new Kobo Aura HD to use and review before it would be available for purchase. Of course I jumped at the opportunity. I love my eReaders. Even though my experience with the Acer was horrible, I had to try out the Kobo. I know, I know…the Acer is not really a reader, but a tablet. That was probably the problem. Too many this and that’s, and it felt like a mini iPad, but worse. So to be fair, I felt it was a great opportunity to compare a competitor’s eReader to my Kindle Paperwhite.

The day finally arrived where my beautiful Kobo Aura HD arrived in the mail. I tore that sucker open like there was no tomorrow, and ooo’d and ahhhh’d over its prettiness! After petting it for a few (lots of) minutes, I wanted to see what this device could do. Another wonderful bonus that arrived with the Kobo Aura HD was the offer for a free book from the Kobo Store to get the ball moving. For those of you who do a lot of online shopping for books, this is not an easy feat! There are so many books from my To Be Read (TBR) pile that I would have loved to have been able to read during my maiden voyage with the Kobo Aura HD. After much deliberation, the book of my choice was When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle. (I’m a sucker for anything Romeo and Juliet-esque and this book has been calling to me since it first came out).

So first things first, I needed to actually set up this thing. By following the simple instructions included with the device, I first needed to set up the Kobo Desktop. This would allow me to sync up my books with my desktop when it’s either connected or over Wi-Fi. Getting the Kobo Desktop installed was simple and quick. I connected my device to my computer so that it could sync up and I waited. Not too long, mind you, but you know how it is with new toys. Mere minutes feel like hours! Since I was still waiting for my free read to be processed (under 24 hours), I thought I would start things off by transferring one of my eARCs for review onto the Kobo Aura HD. Giddiness and excitement ensued.

That excitement and giddiness soon fizzled to frustration and much “colourful” language. I guess for those who have been using a Kobo device as their main reader, they knew the steps needed to get their books onto their device. Not this girl. I was simply thrown into the pool to learn on my own. I was pretty close to drowning, I tell ya! I couldn’t find anything on the Kobo site that explained exactly what I needed to do. I had to do a Google search and go through different sites to figure out what exactly I needed to do. In order to transfer your own ePubs to the Kobo device, I needed to insert a micro SD card into my computer , copy the ebook to the micro SD card, and then stick the micro SD card into the Kobo Aura HD and it should be able to detect the card and allow you to read it. You must keep the micro SD card in while reading the book. (yah, learned that the hard way). AND make sure that the micro SD card is empty aside from your book before you enter it into your device. I ended up with tons of crap and pics that I had to manually delete. ARGH!

Finally, the book was successfully on my Kobo Aura HD. All I had to do was click eject on the Kobo Desktop and I was good to go! YES! Yah, no. It kept crashing for me. And with each crash, the Kobo Aura HD and the Kobo Desktop kept re-syncing with each other. Finally, I just had to manually eject the device by right-clicking and ejecting it from My Computer. I tried again a few days later, but ended up with the same results. Ejecting via the Kobo Desktop kept crashing my computer.

Now onward to the reading experience! What I did notice right off the bat was the totally awesome spine-esque grippy thing on the back. It was more comfortable to hold and grip compared to my Kindle Paperwhite. Where the Kindle Paperwhite is flat, the Kobo Aura HD has a unique design where the back gives off the effect of the spine of a book. I loved that! It was a lot more comfortable holding the reader, and walking around with it. What I wasn’t a fan of was the texture of the device. It was more of a plasticy/metallic type feel and my hands tend to get a little sweaty at times. So it was feeling a little slippery when wet. I wish that the feel was more of what the Kindle Paperwhite has, a soft touch rubberized finish which allowed for more grip.

I liked that I was able to turn the backlight on and off with the touch of a button. I attempted reading in both daylight and night. I noticed that when I turned down the backlight, the screen would start to flicker which in turn induced a bit of a headache. But with a simple touch on the screen, the ability to chance the backlight settings is pretty simple. One thing that I did have a little bit of problem with was the highlighting feature. It seemed a little touchy and wasn’t a seamless drag of the finger. It would require a few attempts to highlight exactly what it was I wanted to capture. But what I did like was that the text highlighted had a handle tool/bounding box thingy that would allow you to highlight more or less after you have removed your finger. Pretty nifty.

What intrigued me was the ability to be able to post comments/messages directly from the book your reading on the Kobo Aura HD to Facebook. What I wish it had was the ability to switch between my personal Facebook page to my blog’s fan Facebook page. The Kobo sadly allows for integration with personal pages only. A lot of our readers follow via our Facebook page for Chapter by Chapter and would have like to have been able to post to that page instead. Our Facebook page is also linked to our Twitter which would have allowed even more of our followers to see what we had to say. What I also wish it had was the ability to post how far along I was in my book. It allows me to make a comment but doesn’t have the ability to automatically send out the progression in the book. I suppose you could just type it in, but it would be easier if there was a one touch ability.

The neat thing about my experience with the Kobo Aura HD was the introduction to the Kobo Reading Life. Basically it’s a place where you win awards just by using your Kobo Aura HD! Whether it’s reading a book on the device for the first time, reading well into the night, or even just connecting your Kobo Aura HD to Facebook.

My final thoughts? The Kobo Aura HD is a fantastic reading device. I could really see the difference in the look of a book page between the Kindle Paperwhite vs. the Kobo Aura HD. The Kobo Aura HD is much crisper and much clearer thanks to it’s increased screen resolution over the Kindle. Aside from the fact that the screen flickered for me on the low light settings, the backlighting for reading was really comfortable on the eyes. I wish that there was a way in which eARCs offered by places such as NetGalley and Edelweiss could be sent directly to the device (like Kindle) rather than having to still connect everything to the computer. I’m hoping that that is something that they will work on! For those that are already pro with their Kobo device, I believe that you will absolutely adore the Kobo Aura HD…especially the unique “book spine” design on the back. It’s really something you need to check out! For those who are Kobo virgins (like me), it takes some getting used to. I’m hoping that the little glitches (like my computer crashing every time I try to eject the device) will be resolved, and that they will allow the chance to switch between Facebook pages, or perhaps connect via Twitter!

I couldn't find a trailer, so here's a song!

** This title was provided to us by the Publisher for an honest review.
We were in no way paid for our opinions **

** If you have not read book 1, I Hunt Killers, there may be spoilers in this review **

I was in love with the first novel in Barry Lyga’s serial killer series I Hunt Killers. It had everything and as a reader who likes bad guys that are absolutely bad to the bone I fell hard for the killers introduced in the first novel and the ending that left me wondering one thing: What will happen next? I mean come on Billy Dent escaped from prison, people are getting murdered left and right and Jazz is doubting himself once again. Something bad is about to happen and it’ll be something that goes from bad to worse. Game is the novel that gives us the bad, I’m positive that the next novel in the series will give us the worse and I have to admit, Game has set the bar pretty high already.

Game begins basically right where I Hunt Killers ended. Billy Dent is somewhere in the world planning to kill to his heart’s content and he wants to see if his son will continue on with the family business. Jazz is still recovering from his experience with the Impressionist when he meets a cop from New York City that reveals to Jazz that a new serial killer is out on the loose. The Hat-Dog killer has been leaving corpses scattered around New York City and nobody can understand what his profile is or why he kills the way he kills. Jazz and his girlfriend Connie end up on a plane to go and help NYPD with their investigation.

It doesn’t take Jazz long to figure out that the Hat-Dog killer must have something involved with Billy somewhere. Nothing adds up when it comes to the Hat-Dog killer’s murders. He mutilates the bodies of his victims and does things to them that are plain disturbing, but Jazz is intent on figuring out the Hat-Dog killer’s profile and stopping him before he can kill anybody else. Then Jazz and Connie begin to receive strange messages about a game and while Jazz continues investigating in New York, Connie is dragged into the world of serial killers. Receiving mysterious text messages, Connie winds up trapped in a game meant for just her and a killer. Jazz and Connie both know that the games these killers are playing are not meant for everybody, but the consequences of not playing are fatal.

Remember everything that you read in I Hunt Killers? Remember the way your eyes would widen when reading about a certain murder scene or the way your heart would race when you read chapters in the killer’s point of view? Yeah, multiply that by twelve because Game absolutely brings it! The murders are more gruesome, more intense and more cringe-worthy. Just like something out an episode of CSI that meets the Saw movies. The killers in Game mean business. There is no hesitation, they know that they’re doing is bad (mostly) and they know that in the end taking a life is just something that they have to do. It is part of the game after all.

We finally get to meet Billy Dent. We did get to see the prison scene with him in I Hunt Killers but that barely told us anything about his character except that he’s the world’s worst dad. Now there are chapters that take place in his head! Finally we get to see just what it is that Billy Dent thinks when he’s alone and we see just how deep his obsession with making Jasper just like him lies. There are still chapters in the point of view of another killer, instead of the Impressionist it is the Hat-Dog killer. The Hat-Dog killer was a character that boggled my mind and left me with a furrowed brow and going “Huh?” Despite how creepy (and gross) the murders were, the Hat-Dog killer is still one that had me afraid and who doesn’t want to be afraid when reading a novel about killers?

I Hunt Killers had a limited amount of POVs (point of views). They really were just Jazz and the Impressionist. In Game we get to see things through the eyes of all the killers, our main character and the two people closest to Jazz: Connie and Howie. I loved getting to see the I Hunt Killers world through the eyes of characters that don’t have Jazz’s history or mind. Plus, I really liked Connie in the last book and I think that female readers will absolutely love how strong and empowering she is as a character. She even gets dragged into Jazz’s messed up world of killers and ends up stuck in a game, intent on finding the identity of the killer she’s dealing with. We learn a lot about Jazz’s girlfriend to say the least. As for Howie, his mind is an absolute laugh riot. I found his thoughts to be hilarious and appropriate for a teenage guy his age.

And that ending! Gah!!! I need more, so help me I don’t think I can wait any longer to know what happens next!!!! Who lives? Who dies? Does Jazz save the day or succumb to everything Billy ever taught him? Will the truth be released? Tell me!! Anyhow, if you liked the mystery that was in I Hunt Killers and the mind-games that went down in the last novel then you’ll probably fall hard for Game. I had absolutely no problems with the novel and devoured it in just one day.

I’d recommend this series to fans of Greg Olsen’s Empty Coffin series, readers who are looking for an intensely good mystery/thriller novel and readers who are looking for a dark read that will have them second-guessing just about everything they know about the people around them.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

I couldn't find a trailer, so here's a song!

** This title was provided to us by the Publisher for an honest review.
We were in no way paid for our opinions *

A while back I saw The Rules by author Stacy Kade on a list of to-be-released 2013 novels and after reading the premise I was really interested in reading. I mean come on! Who isn’t interested by rule #5? No falling in love? Whaaat? You’re basically telling me about a rule that was created to be broken by the main character. Now that I’ve finally gotten the chance to read The Rules I will tell you one thing: The Rules are broken and the novel is pretty awesome.

The Rules follows the life of main character Ariane Tucker. Living under the identity of a dead girl, Ariane is an escaped genetic experiment created by combining human and alien DNA. Throughout her life Ariane’s “Father” has pressed the importance of following the Rules and not being caught by GTX—the lab that created her. It’s not until Ariane’s only friend, Jenna, is humiliated by the resident mean girl, Rachel Jacobs, that everything she ever worked to keep a secret is threatened. Suddenly Ariane and Jenna are targeted for bullying and pranks that push Ariane to her limits. She’s fed up with Rachel Jacobs and wants to bring her down even if it means breaking a few Rules.

Enter Zane Bradshaw, attractive, mysterious and fed-up with his “friends”. When Rachel decides that Ariane must be punished for standing up to her Zane decides that it’s time to teach Rachel that she cannot step on everybody that comes in her way. Together Zane and Ariane plan to double-cross Rachel by following through with Rachel’s prank. Zane and Ariane pretend to be a couple. They both treat their fake relationship like a game, after all that’s all it is right? But soon emotions begin to play a key role in their relationship and both Zane and Ariane notice that it isn’t a game anymore. They really are falling for each other, something that Ariane can’t allow.

But being together has its price. Ariane is learning the truth about every relationship she has ever had outside of the lab. Zane is coming to terms with the fact that he might never be good enough for anybody. GTX seems to be growing stronger and more keyed in on Ariane’s location. Do they know more than Ariane believes? Will GTX steal her away? Will her worst nightmare become a reality?

I’ll be honest that when it came to The Rules I expected it to be a total action novel, I thought that there would be aliens and government agents coming left and right… and my prediction skills were very off. Instead, The Rules is a novel that still does have government agents (sorta) and aliens (sorta) but focuses more on a half-alien girl trying to survive high school without being sent back to the lab where she was created. It may not be the action novel I was hoping for but still it was a really original read. The novel does focus mostly on the forbidden romance between Zane and Ariane (but who didn’t see it coming?) and I did worry that Zane being with Ariane would result in his ultimate demise.

There is a lot of teen drama in the novel because of the novel’s main antagonist Rachel Jacobs, granddaughter of Dr. Jacobs a.k.a. the scientist in charge of Ariane when she was in the lab. Rachel Jacobs pulls a bunch of stunts throughout the novel that are insane and terrible going from defacing somebody’s locker to making them look like a dog. However my hate for her definitely had me cheering on the Zane/Ariane duo to give the girl what she had coming for her. By the end of the novel, I have to say that I think Rachel will be thinking twice about anything. You heard me anything.

The Rules switches between the POVs of main characters Zane and Ariane. I personally really enjoyed that because I got to see the two sides to the story, I got to see what Rachel’s friends endure and saw the personal issues behind Zane’s character. Then I also got to see Ariane’s life which, as being an escaped experiment, is mostly her trying to obey the Rules and fight the emotions in her chest, while also telling the reader about some of her experiences inside of GTX. It was nice to see the way the two characters think of each other, always thinking so fondly about each other and eventually coming to terms with the fact that they are both interested in each other that way.

After that ending I’m pretty sure that the Project Paper Doll series will have another installment that I am eagerly anticipating. Until then, I’ll just have to imagine what happens next to Zane and Ariane. I’d recommend this novel to readers that are fans of sci-fi and want to see some high school drama added into the mix, readers that are fans of novels like Michelle Gagnon’s Don’t Turn Around and readers that are looking for a forbidden romance meets sci-fi novel.

As an award-winning corporate copywriter, Stacey Kade has written about everything from backhoe loaders to breast pumps. But she prefers to make things up instead.

She lives in the Chicago suburbs with her husband, Greg, and three retired racing greyhounds, Joezooka (Joe), Tall Walker (Walker) and SheWearsThePants (Pansy). When she’s not reading or writing, you’ll likely find her parked in front of the television with her Roswell DVDs, staring rapturously at Jason Behr.

The Ghost and the Goth is her first YA novel. You can find her (far too often) on Facebook and Twitter as well as http://www.staceykade.com.
