Blog Tour: Voices of the Sea by Bethany Masone Harar – Interview and Giveaway

The Sirens of Pacific Grove, California are being exterminated, and seventeen-year-old Loralei Reines is their next target. Lora may look like a normal teenager, but her voice has the power to enchant and hypnotize men. Like the other Sirens in her clan, however, she keeps her true identity a secret to protect their species.

Lora’s birthright as the next clan leader seems far off, until the Sons of Orpheus, a vicious cult determined to kill all Sirens on Earth, begin exterminating her people. When an unexpected tragedy occurs, Lora must take her place as Guardian of the Clan.

Lora is determined to gain control of her skills to help her clan, but they are developing too slowly, until she meets Ryan, a human boy. When Ryan is near, Lora’s abilities strengthen. She knows she shouldn’t be with a human. Yet, she can’t resist her attraction to him, or the surge in power she feels whenever they’re together.

And the Sirens are running out of time. If Lora can’t unlock the secret to defeat the Sons of Orpheus, she, along with everyone she loves, will be annihilated.

Top Favs with Bethany Masone Harar

You’re home alone, there’s a fire!  Top 3 things you’d grab and save from the fire.

  1. My thumb drive
  2. Wedding album
  3. Mr. Squishy, the pillow.

Top 3 Favorite authors (dead or alive) and why

  1. Shakespeare – He is the master of language and crafted stories that are still applicable to our lives today.  He also had a very dirty mind and makes me laugh.
  2. Katherine Patterson – Her books have touched my soul more than any other.
  3. Stephen King – For being horrifyingly delightful, and for showing me that every character has a good and a bad side.

Top 3 Favorite snacks while writing and why

  1. Pita chips and hummus – They are delicious and on the healthy side.
  2. A piece of dark chocolate (or two) – It satisfies my sweet tooth.
  3. A glass of wine – It makes me more creative.

Top 3 Favorite books that inspired you to write and why

  1. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon – Jamie Fraser was my first book boyfriend, and I always wanted to create a character to rival him.
  2. Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Patterson – Her characters are so complex, and she spoke to me as both a teenager and as an adult, which is something I aspire to as well.
  3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – It confirmed, for me,  that YA Lit can be raw and scary, but still appeal to teenagers.

Top 3 favorite songs to listen to while writing and why

  1. D’Arline by The Civil Wars – It helps me write poignant scenes and makes me feel like I’m outside instead of typing in my house.
  2. Strange and Beautiful by Aqualung – I listen to this when romance is in order.
  3. “Film Scores” station on Pandora – The theme music inspires me, and often changes the course of my story.

Top 3 favorite techniques to overcome writers block and why

  1.  Brainstorming with my husband – He is so creative, and helps me come up with new ideas.  He also has a wicked sense of humor.
  2. Adding a new, quirky character – They liven up the book and often impact my characters in ways I wouldn’t have imagined.
  3. Skipping the middle and write the ending – Once I’ve decided how the book will end, I find it is easier to get there.

Top 3 musicians/bands/groups and why

  1. The Civil Wars – Their voices are amazing, and their music is so powerful.  They also have a song to match all of my moods.
  2. Coldplay – They have long been a favorite, because I find their music to be so fulfilling, inspiring and moving.
  3. Imagine Dragons – They are so versatile, and never fail to surprise me with their music.  One minute I’m listening to an uplifting song, and the next I’m hearing something serious and rough.  I love the variety!

Top 3 favorite movies of all time and why

  1. Last of the Mohicans – Daniel Day Lewis is the sexiest man alive in this film.  Oh, and the story is amazing and so moving.  But Daniel Day Lewis.  Mmmm.
  2. Pride and Prejudice (Kiera Knightly version) – I love how it is quiet, but says so much at the same time.  I like this particular version because of how much of the movie is filmed outside, and also because Mr. Darcy is really hot.
  3. Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back – While this is the “quietest” of the original trilogy, I think it is the best for furthering the plot.  And, Han Solo and Princess Leia get together, so it has to be the best.

Top 3 favorite animated movies and why

  1. Tangled – LOVE the music.  LOVE the story.  LOVE the humor.
  2. Shrek – Hilarious!  This movie, in my opinion, started the trend of making animated films for children AND for adults, which is great because I don’t have to sit through something that makes me want to bury my sorrows in butter-laden popcorn and run screaming from the theater.
  3. The Last Unicorn – This was my favorite animated movie as a kid, because I was in love with Unicorns.  It both scared and thrilled me, and I spent hours thinking about alternate endings.
  4. Up – I’m cheating and adding one more, but the first five minutes of this movie are probably the best animated sequence I’ve ever seen, and I cry every time.  So.  Very.  Beautiful.

Top 3 favorite movie moments and why

  1. Dragonfly – I don’t want to give the end away, but when I watch the last scene of this movie, I get goose-bumps, just like I am getting now by thinking about it.  I can watch only the last ten minutes of the movie and still cry with happiness.
  2. Resurrection – This is an older movie, but the last scene is one of the most moving things I’ve ever watched.  It is both sad and so happy, and I really suggest you watch the movie.
  3. The Notebook – On the dock, up to the bedroom.  Best love scene ever

Top 3 favorite actors/actresses and why

  1. Sarah Michelle Geller – She is Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.  Enough said.
  2. Harrison Ford – My first real movie-star crush.  Indiana Jones, Han Solo.  He’s awesome.
  3. Kiera Knightly – I think she is lovely, and an amazing actress.  I also like the way she talks.

Top 3 favorite gadgets and why

  1. iphone – I don’t leave home without it.  It has EVERYTHING.
  2. Thumb drives – They store all of my books!  They are amazing!
  3. Egg piercer – Prevents cracked eggs and are hard to find.  I would never give mine up.

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why

  1. Fiji – Have you see pictures of Fiji?  If so, I don’t need to explain.  If not, go look.  Then I don’t have to explain.
  2. Hawaii – Gorgeous, beautiful, magical.  I want to be there now.
  3. Africa – I think this would be an eye-opening place to visit, and a safari would be on my list as well.
