Luke can uncross almost any curse—they unravel themselves for him like no one else. So working for the Kovrovs, one of the families controlling all the magic in New York, is exciting and dangerous, especially when he encounters the first curse he can’t break. And it involves Jeremy, the beloved, sheltered prince of the Kovrov family—the one boy he absolutely shouldn’t be falling for.

Jeremy’s been in love with cocky, talented Luke since they were kids. But from their first kiss, something’s missing. Jeremy’s family keeps generations of deadly secrets, forcing him to choose between love and loyalty. As Luke fights to break the curse, a magical, citywide war starts crackling, and it’s tied to Jeremy.

This might be the one curse Luke can’t uncross. If true love’s kiss fails, what’s left for him and Jeremy?

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

Thank you! I’m so excited to share my debut, The Uncrossing, with you.

Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)

THE UNCROSSING is an m/m Rapunzel retelling in the magic mafia!

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

I wish I had a snappy story for you! The truth is, I dragged this inspiration together through a lot of work, bringing lots of different ideas together. About half the characters existed in another story I was trying to write—this overly complex mess set in outer space, if you can believe it—and while I was struggling with it, I was also getting really into fairy tales and folk magic, and doing a ton of research even though I didn’t have a plan for it. Once I realized that I need to take those characters out of space and find a story that fit their flaws and strengths better, I figured out what all that magic was for. I decided to combine a fairy tale and a mafia movie, and that was the idea that brought it all together.

Tell us about the main character(s).

Luke and Jeremy are two boys who’ve grown up together in the mafia-like world that regulates mafic in New York. Jeremy’s family is one of the few big, old families that consolidate power, and Luke’s family works for them. Jeremy has been harboring a crush on Luke since basically forever, but as they get to know each other better, much bigger secrets than that start coming out…

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

I can’t quote it here without giving everything away, but—the very last scene is probably my favorite part. It took a lot of rewriting and working to find my way to most of the story, but I knew where they were going to end up from the very beginning, and that last scene is still very much how I first envisioned it. Having that star to guide me really sustained me through the writing, and ultimately I’m so happy I got the story where it needed to be at the end.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

I wrote and re-wrote the beginning so much! Just from a technical perspective, it is hard to introduce the characters and setting without dumping out a bunch of information or being confusing. It is worth the work, though.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?

I am working on something brand new right now—when I have details I can share, I definitely will!

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!

Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy The Uncrossing, and I’d love to hear from you on Twitter or Tumblr.
