After invaders destroyed her village, murdered her family, and took her prisoner, shield-maiden Ragna is hungry for revenge. A trained warrior, she is ready to fight for her home, but with only a mermaid and a crew of disloyal mercenaries to aid her, Ragna knows she needs new allies. Guided by the magical maps on her skin, battling storms and mutiny, Ragna sets sail across the Northern Sea.

She petitions the Jarl in Skjordal for aid, but despite Ragna’s rank and fighting ability, the Jarl sees only a young girl, too inexperienced to lead, unworthy of help. To prove herself to the Jarl and win her crew’s respect, Ragna undertakes a dangerous expedition. But when forced to decide between her own freedom and the fate of her crew, what will she sacrifice to save what’s left of her home?

Inspired by Norse mythology and J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, this companion novel to The Seafarer’s Kiss is a tale of vengeance, valor, honor, and redemption.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

I’m excited to be here on Chapter by Chapter, introducing the second book of my Seafarer Duology, The Navigator’s Touch!

Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)

The Navigator’s Touch is a companion novel to The Seafarer’s Kiss. It follows Viking shield-maiden Ragna as she seeks revenge on the crew who raided her home. Along the way, she has to learn to captain a ship, battle Norse monsters and make a deal with Loki.

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

My inspiration for the series came from two sources: my love of dark fairytales, in particular the Little Mermaid, and my postgraduate study of Vikings!

Tell us about the main character(s).

Ragna is a Viking warrior. She has trained her whole life to become a shield maiden, and as a child, she dreamed of travelling to a jarl’s hall and proving herself as a warrior. Then, her home is ransacked by invaders. Her family is killed and Ragna is kidnapped. After she escapes, her dreams turn to revenge. As a person, she’s ambitious and stubborn almost to a fault. She’s also a formidable warrior, and the leader of a mercenary crew.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

I really enjoyed writing Ragna’s evolving friendship with one of her crewmen, Torstein. At the beginning, she doesn’t trust him at all. He has previously served her enemy, and has been a captain himself. He’s constantly trying to challenge her authority, and eventually commits open mutiny. However, after she beats him in a fight, their relationship starts to change. At first, she’s still wary, but as their respect for each other grows, so does their friendship.

I also loved writing the kiss scenes between Ersel and Ragna. This book isn’t a romance per say, but the f/f relationship is a big part of the narrative.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

Ragna was a difficult, but rewarding character to write, because her fatal flaw is also her greatest strength. She is ambitious, and her ambition fuels so much of the book, but it also leads her to make mistakes and to push away the people closest to her. I loved writing about her desire for power, and rounding her out with compassion as the story goes on. I struggled to keep her relatable. She does some terrible in things in the book, in the name of revenge and power. I hope I succeeded!

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?

I’m working on a few things right now, but struggling to settle into one project! I have a YA contemporary rom com in the works, as well as an adult high fantasy. I can’t say much about them because they are still in the early stages.
