Hello everyone, and welcome to our stop for
The Heartbreakers by Ali Novak
presented by Sourcebooks Fire!
We are thrilled to have Ali stop by the blog for a quick Q&A!
Be sure to enter the giveaway found at the end of the post.
Stella will do anything for her sick sister, Cara—even stand in line for an autographed Heartbreakers CD…for four hours. She’s totally winning best birthday gift this year. At least she met a cute boy with soft brown hair and gorgeous blue eyes while getting her caffeine fix. Too bad she’ll never see him again.
Except, Stella’s life has suddenly turned into a cheesy love song. Because Starbucks Boy is Oliver Perry – lead singer for the Heartbreakers. And even after she calls his music crap, Oliver still gives Stella his phone number. And whispers quotes from her favorite Disney movie in her ear. OMG, what is her life?
But how can Stella even think about being with Oliver – dating and laughing and pulling pranks with the band – when her sister could be dying of cancer?
Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!
Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet): Aspiring photographer Stella Samuel meets Oliver Perry, lead singer for the Heartbreakers, and is offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
What was your inspiration for writing this book? Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk? I found my inspiration for The Heartbreakers when I was studying abroad during my junior year of college. I lived with a group of Irish girls, and they all had posters of some British group I’ve never heard of—One Direction. At the time, I was still posting my work on the online reading and writing community Wattpad. A few weeks after moving to Ireland, One Direction fan fiction stories started appearing on the website, and it wasn’t long before there were thousands of them. I decided to put my own twist on the popular trend and create a story about a fictional band instead of writing about a real one.
Tell us about the main character(s). My first main character, Stella Samuel, is a triplet whose life has been defined by her sister, Cara’s, illness. After four years of being homeschooled and spending time at the hospital, Stella hasn’t enjoyed a regular high school experience. Because of this, she feels like she doesn’t know who she is as a person and struggles throughout most of the story to discover herself. Stella is obsessed with professional photographer Bianca Bridge, whom she views her as a role model, and she loves underground punk and grunge music. My male lead, Oliver Perry, is the lead vocalist and song writer for the world famous band the Heartbreakers. He was born in Portland, Oregon and raised by his grandparents. He formed his first band, which was named Infinity and Beyond, with his best friends JJ Morris and Xander Jones freshman year of high school. Oliver loves cooking and all things James Bond, and he values family over everything else in his life.
Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love? The scene in Starbucks where Stella and Oliver meet for the first time is really special to me. It was the first scene that I wrote for the book, long before I knew where I was going with the story. I didn’t even know who my characters were at the time, but I had this image in my head of two strangers meeting and feeling an instant spark.
Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing? If so, why? I had a particularly difficult time writing Oliver’s song to Stella. Lyrics aren’t really my forte.
What sort of projects do you have going on right now. Any new books coming out? Right now I’m working on the next book in The Heartbreak Chronicles series. Currently the book is untitled, but it will be about Alec Williams.
Thanks you so much for having me! I had a ton of fun, and I can’t wait to come back in the future!
