For hundreds of years, dark clouds covered the skies of Adamah, and an ageless king ruled. Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king’s army, an unmatched force with inhuman Strength, Speed, Accuracy, Perception, Empathy, and Healing. With the army behind him, the king—a man who wields all six abilities—was invincible and unquestioned in his rule. To most, serving the king was an honor. But for others, it was a fate worse than death.

When seventeen-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king’s army, he vows never to follow the same path.

So when his own power—the Shay of Accuracy—comes upon him at the Tournament of Awakening, Nolan conceals his emergence instead of joining the king’s ranks. For years, he traitorously hides his power, pretending to be only a gifted scribe. But when Nolan comes face -to-face with a deserter, the man discovers his secret.

To evade detection and a death sentence, Nolan escapes with the deserter and flees into a night filled with dark creatures who steal both powers and souls. He joins a resistance, a village hidden deep in the forest, filled with others who secretly wield a Shay. But his peace is short-lived when they discover that the dark clouds, undead creatures, their own decreasing powers, and even the king, are all connected.

Top Favs with Kristal Shaff

Top 3 Favorite authors (dead or alive) and why

Currently, my three favorite authors would have to be Brandon Sanderson, Jim Butcher, and Marissa Meyer.

  1. Brandon Sanderson creates these wonderful fantasy worlds with so many layers. Very epic. Very rich. And I love how he hides obvious things in his writing, so when you reach a point later in the material you want to slap your head for not seeing how he weaved it in. He is my favorite author.
  2. Jim Butcher because his writing is incredibility fun, especially in his Urban fantasy series, The Dresden Files. I’ve also read his epic fantasy series, Codex Alera, and those are pretty good too.
  3. I recently started loving Marissa Meyer by reading her Lunar Chronicles Series. Each book gets better, imo. I find myself really connecting and falling in love with the characters. Can’t wait for the next one!

Top 3 favorite movies of all time and why.

Wow. This one is hard. I love movies. I guess I’d have to choose my answer by which movies I can stick in and watch multiple times without getting sick of them. Or my go-to movies when I’m working and want to listen to something.

  1. A & E’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. It is fun, with lots of quotable, classic lines. Also, a good friend and I had always watched it together. It makes me think of her. And lastly, and most importantly … Colin Firth as Darcy.
  2. SPIDERMAN 2. Not the new series, but the older one. There are moments in it that I find so epic and wonderful.  And I love how this nerdy nobody ends up being a hero. Funny enough, I think THE EMISSARY is similar in that way. It’s about rising above your insecurity to become something more. The new Spiderman movies are completely opposite. The new character is cocky and so self-assured. I like the underdog Spiderman better.
  3. KNIGHTS TALE. Oh, it’s so incredibly cheesy. It’s not really a great movie, either. But I love it anyway. They mix modern music with medieval fantasy. It appeals to me on so many levels. How can you not love a crowd singing “We Will Rock You” in the middle of a joust? Right?

Top 3 favorite animated movies and why

  1. Beauty and the Beast: I love this story, and how she falls in love with the beast. It’s all about looking at a person on the inside, instead of on outward appearance. This is my favorite fairytale.
  2. The Incredibles: Hello! Superheroes! This movie is so clever and great. I love the characters, especially, their growth throughout the movie. Pixar does an amazing job.
  3. How to Train Your Dragon: I have a soft spot for dragons, and Toothless is so stinkin’ cute! I love the move, it’s characters and the story.

Top 3 favorite actors/actresses and why

  1. Hugh Jackman: He is an amazing and versatile actor. He can play a gay man on Broadway in one moment, then be a rough, spike-wielding superhero the next. His performance in Les Miserable was outstanding. He’s one of the best actors in the industry.
  2. Tom Hiddleston: LOVED him as Loki. And his voice is oh so lovely. Looking forward to seeing more from him.
  3. Colin Firth: Loved him as Darcy. And he is outstanding in his other roles too, such as his performance in THE KING’S SPEECH. Another talented actor.

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why

  1. Ireland. Why? Because it’s beautiful. We’ve been told there is a church there that is the mirror image of the church my husband and I were married in. I don’t remember at all where, but if I were to go, I would find out where.
  2. Scotland. It’s also beautiful. Would love to see the landscape and visit castles.
  3. Germany. I took German for several years in high school and have had a fondness for it since then.

Top 3 Favorite snacks while writing

  1. Chips and Salsa.
  2. Dove Chocolate.
  3. Coffee. (Is that a snack? Maybe not. But it is a must)
