High school senior Kenzie Harper-Shea has no time for dating, especially after the arrival of the basketball coach from hell. Now Kenzie has lost her confidence, is in a slump, and in danger of losing out on a scholarship to play college ball. The last thing she needs is her “vacation boyfriend,” Dylan McCoy, distracting her with warm smiles, inside jokes, and swoony kisses.

Dylan, however, is totally ready to date. He finally lives in the same town as Kenzie and is not about to lose the chance to let their relationship grow into something more. But for now, he’ll stay in the friend zone because he’s determined to find out what has her running scared. It can’t be just about basketball.

As Kenzie spends more time around Dylan, her feelings become a jumbled-up mess. It’s obvious they’re into each other. So, why does she panic whenever she thinks about dating him? Is it connected to basketball or to something deeper? She’s not sure. Does she have the courage to examine her heart, even if it means breaking Dylan’s?

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

You’re welcome! Thanks for having me here. It’s really fun.

Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)

A teenage girl avoids dating a guy she cares about because of painful emotions from her past that she’s afraid to examine.

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

Since The Dylan Dilemma is the second in a series, the idea came from secondary characters in About Last Summer, Kenzie and Dylan. Why would Kenzie be hesitant to date a great guy that she’s really into? There had to be something buried in her past to cause that reluctance.

Tell us about the main character(s).

Kenzie Harper-Shea is a high school senior basketball player with a loving family—a precocious seven-year-old sister, an adoptive father, and a supportive mother. She really wants a basketball scholarship to a good college.

Dylan McCoy is a freshman at the University of Texas and a former high school tennis player. He loves being around kids, but instead of majoring in education has given in to his parents’ need for him to be in a higher paying profession and is studying biomedical engineering.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

I enjoyed writing the zombie scene with Kenzie’s relatives, the Bryson family. They’re always up for some craziness and this time they asked the teens to zombify their Halloween costumes so they could scare the older trick or treaters. But the scene I really love is near the end when Kenzie makes an effort with Dylan. I just love his reaction and I hope readers will too.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

There’s a scene where Kenzie has to deal with feelings about her biological father from the past and how they are affecting her in the present. It was difficult because I wanted to get the range of emotions just right. It took some rewriting to work it all out.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?

I recently finished the third book in this series. It’s currently titled Amanda vs. the Universe, but I don’t have a release date yet.

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!

Thanks so much!
