Never was there a tale of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo…But true love never dies. Though they’re parted by the veil between the world of mortals and the land of the dead, Romeo believes he can restore Juliet to life, but he’ll have to travel to the underworld with a thoroughly infuriating guide.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, may not have inherited his father’s crown, but the murdered king left his son a much more important responsibility—a portal to the Afterjord, where the souls of the dead reside. When the determined Romeo asks for help traversing the treacherous Afterjord, Hamlet sees an opportunity for adventure, and the chance to avenge his father’s death.

In an underworld filled with leviathan monsters, ghoulish shades, fire giants and fierce Valkyrie warriors, Hamlet and Romeo must battle their way through jealousy, despair, and their darkest fears to rescue the fair damsel. Yet finding Juliet is only the beginning, and the Afterjord doesn’t surrender souls without a price…

Top Favs with Jenny Trout

You’re home alone, there’s a fire! Top 3 things you’d grab and save from the fire.

I’m actually really afraid of this happening, so I always sleep with my laptop under my bed. That would be the first thing I’d grab. Then my puppy, because she can’t walk down the stairs yet, and my giant Raggedy Ann doll, who is named John Denver. Because when I was four, I thought John Denver was a beautiful name.

Top 3 Favorite authors (dead or alive) and why

Herman Melville is my favorite author, hands down. Not only was Moby-Dick a really misunderstood vision, he had a pretty unhappy life. When I was going through a bad time about a year ago, his short stories got me through. I’ll read basically anything Leanna Renee Hieber writes, even if it’s like, a history of phone books, and I read and reread Anne Rice and Neil Gaiman. I know that’s four, but I’m a loose canon! I’m a maverick! I disregard your rules! Also, they tied.

Top 3 Favorite snacks while writing and why

Chips, popcorn, basically anything that I can eat while typing. Type type, stuff my face, type type, stuff my face. But I’m trying not to do that anymore. Zots, these hard candies with, well, I guess in the UK it would be called sherbet? Really sour powder stuff that foams. But I’m afraid to eat those alone, because they’re slippery and I don’t want to choke. I have a lot of fears. And I have to drink a big glass of water all the time. Really, it’s a jar, like a canning jar, full of water. I get super thirsty while I write, and then I can’t stop thinking about how thirsty I am, so it’s a distraction.

Top 3 favorite songs to listen to while writing and why

While I was working on Such Sweet Sorrow, my three favorite songs to write to were “Heartlines” by Florence + The Machine, because I felt it matched the tone I wanted for the book perfectly, and it described Romeo’s journey to find Juliet; “The Sun” by The Naked and Famous, because it had this driving urgency to it that kept me kind of wound up and tense for scary scenes, and it sort of became Juliet’s song in my mind; “Eyes Wide Open,” by Gotye, because it’s kind of bleak and chaotic, and very much what I imagine Hamlet’s mind to sound like.

Top 3 favorite animated movies and why

Disney’s Hercules, because the music is constantly stuck in my head, and The Last Unicorn, because it makes my heart hurt in a different way every time I watch it. And The Prince of Egypt because it’s so inspirational and beautiful, and Ofra Haza’s singing, really all of the music is fantastic. I could talk about the music in that one for days.

Top 3 favorite gadgets and why

This is going to make me sound super old, but I have this lid that fits on a bottle of one of my medications and it has a timer that shows when you last took your pills. That removes a lot of stress from my life. My Kindle Fire, because holy cow, so many books on there. Can I just get in there and live in it? My purple headphones, because they’re not earbuds, which, you know, are fine, but they don’t block out much noise. I really need quiet for writing; most of the time I’m not even listening to music through them.

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why

Just after high school, I went to France, and one of the places we went was this walled medieval city on the seaside, called St. Malo, and it was so incredibly beautiful. I desperately want to go back there. I’d love to go to Venice some day, but I also kind of don’t, because I don’t want to contribute to the sinking, and I’ve never been to Alaska. I think it must be amazing up there. I want to see some bears eating salmon in a stream, that’s on my bucket list.
