Now that Lia and Clay’s love has broken the Little Mermaid’s curse, everything has changed. Will Lia’s family remain on land, leading the only life she and her sisters have ever known, or will they move below the waves, to the sparkling new capital city? Lia is adamant about staying on land with Clay for her senior year. But at Melusine and her father’s trial, new revelations threaten what Lia holds most dear.

The verdict will shake Lia’s whole world, calling into question her future with Clay, her feelings for Caspian, and the fate of all Merkind. As she wonders who to trust, Lia sets out on a treacherous path that will lead her away from her sheltered Malibu home to a remote and mysterious school for Mermaids—Mermaids who may hold the secret to ancient magic Lia can use to either get back all she’s lost or to embark on a thrilling and dangerous journey.

Cover Love

When you’re an author who was lucky enough to love—LOVE!—her first cover, waiting for your publisher to send you the cover for your sequel sends you to heights of unparalleled anticipation.  It’s like going to a restaurant you haven’t been to in a year where you once ate the best dessert you’ve ever tasted, and hoping, just hoping, it tastes as good this time around.

And if you’re really, really lucky, it tastes better.

Before I opened the email from my editor with the cover of Submerge attached,  I had no idea what to expect.  I figured the font would be the same as it was for Emerge, but other than that, I didn’t have a clue.  Of course, I had spent countless hours daydreaming about what it might look like and scrolling through endless stock photo websites trying to imagine it (hours I probably should have spent writing, I know).  I had even toyed with the idea of emailing my publisher ideas and photos I liked, but ultimately, I decided to resist the urge.  After all, they had given me the absolutely gorgeous cover of Emerge, so even though it was hard, I chose to back away and let the professionals do their job.  And boy did they do it!

The cover of Submerge perfectly captures the slightly darker, more ominous tone of Book 2 while still being as feminine, pretty, and magical as the cover of Book 1, which must have been really hard to accomplish.  The varied shades of blue and pink in the sky are one of my favorite details.

I love that we finally get to see Lia’s golden tail.  Since a major theme of the book is Lia struggling to reconcile her upbringing in the human world with her Mer identity, the two covers work so well as representations of the two sides she sees of herself.

Also, when I first put pictures of the two covers side by side and saw that the horizon lines up, I totally freaked out.  Seriously—I ran around BookCon showing all my author friends on my phone like a big nerd.  Fortunately, if anyone understands this kind of behavior, it’s author friends.  One of them (the ever-wonderful Jennie K. Brown) even took this picture of me that weekend at the official BookCon cover reveal.  I look ridiculously happy because, honestly, I couldn’t believe I got to be there among so many book lovers signing copies of my debut and revealing the cover of my sequel.  I still can’t believe it.

And I can’t believe Submerge is about to hit shelves.  I hope you love it as much as I do!  I can promise more magic than ever, more heart-thumping twists, and, of course, more romance.

I’d love to hear about your first reaction to the cover in the comments below or on social (I’m @TobieEaston).
