There’s a scene in the first quarter of the book where Luca simply cannot handle Cassandra’s waffling feelings any longer and basically asks her point blank if she loves Falco. When she doesn’t respond immediately, he tells her to figure out what she wants and then walks away from her. And even though he does it without breaking down, I always kind of imagine him destroyed on the inside.
Without You by Vain
“I never knew that nights would be so long, without you. And only time will heal, time will heal all wounds, without you.”
There’s just something about nineties glam rock that feels right for this series. Cass can’t pick both guys, so one of them is going to get his heart broken. Nothing feels more like drama and despair than guys wearing lipstick rocking out in minor key.

The music and the video for this song feel perfect for the Order of the Eternal Rose. It’s full of creepy drumbeats and I imagine music like this playing when the Order has their secret meetings and blood ceremonies.

A lot of people have pointed out that Falco doesn’t seem good for Cass, that they fight too much, that their relationship isn’t based on anything solid. To me this song captures the sort of love-frustration relationship the two of them are having.
Paradise Circus by Massive Attack
“Love is like a sin, my love.”
Cass wrestles once more with her conflicting feelings for Falco and Luca, and as usual is overcome with guilt. I imagine this playing when Falco comes to find her after Luca walks away from her.

This is another song from the nineties (revived for the TV show Revolution) that just has the right creepy feel for the book. I imagine it playing as Cass climbs to the top of the Mezzanotte Island to find the group known as the Blood of Midnight.

There’s a scene near the end of the book where Cass spends the night with one of the guys and they have a really honest and sweet conversation (and okay fine, there is also much kissing). This song would be perfect for that scene.

If Venom was Cass and Falco’s book and Belladonna was Cass and Luca’s book, Starling is Cass’s book alone. She’s become tougher—physically and emotionally—and she wouldn’t survive until the final page if it weren’t for the strength she developed during the trilogy.
Fiona Paul lives in the Midwest but travels a lot since she can’t breathe if she spends too much time away from the ocean. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a major in psychology and spent a year teaching English in Seoul, Korea while she was deciding what she wanted to be when she grew up. Answer: everything. In addition to being a teacher and writer, she’s also worked as a saute cook, sporting goods manager, veterinary assistant, and registered nurse. When she’s not working, you can usually find her kayaking, reading, or helping turtles cross the road. Her future goals include diving with great white sharks and writing more books, not necessarily in that order. Venom is her first novel.
