Convinced she’s a part of the witness protection program, sixteen-year-old Jewel Rose is shuffled around the globe with her family like a pack of traveling gypsies. After arriving at lucky home twenty-seven, she stumbles upon a mysterious boy with magical powers claiming to be her guardian . . . and warning of imminent danger. Despite the obvious sparks between them, Jewel discovers a relationship is forbidden, and the more she learns about dark, brooding Roman, she begins to question who she can even believe—the family who raised her, or the supposed sworn protector who claims they’ve been lying to her all along.

As she struggles to uncover who her family has really been running from, she is forced to hide her birthmark that reveals who she is. With new realities surfacing, unexplained powers appearing, and two tempting boys vying for her heart, Jewel battles to learn who she can trust in an ever growing sea of lies, hoping she’ll make it through her seventeenth birthday alive.

Who doesn’t love a good story about witches!  Spectral by Shannon Duffy is full of witchy goodness, and drool worthy leading men.

The story revolves around main character Jewel who, at the age of almost 17, lives pretty much like a gypsy.  Never staying in one place for a long period of time, constantly on the move, and looking over her shoulder.  Thinking that the only reason that she could be on the run so much is that her parents are getting away from criminals that are hunting them down and so have been placed in the witness protection program, Jewel doesn’t even question her parents.

On the cusp of her 17th birthday, Jewel learns the astonishing truth of who or what she is…  Jewel is a witch.  Not only is she “just” a witch, but she is special.  She is the Spectral.  What is a Spectral?

“…the witch will enhance the endowment of each member of the coven,

brining immense power and blessings to the coven overall.  This witch is so named the Spectral.”

Basically, Jewel is going to be a kickass, powerful witch.  Awesome, right?  The bad side…all the other witch coven’s want her, because to have her would mean that they would be the supreme coven.   Hence the constant moving around with her family.  Not only are there those that want her for their own personal gain, but there are those out there that want to seek Jewel out and kill her, simply because being a Spectral is an abomination.  It also doesn’t help that in past history, Spectrals have been known to become all power hungry and turn on other witches, including their own family members.   Good thing a Spectral is able to absorb any powers that are used against them.  Too bad Jewel’s not yet 17, and hasn’t had her quickening…which is pretty much a ritual completed on the 17th birthday.  Things are NOT looking too good for our heroine.

Not only are we fully immersed into this world of witchcraft created by Shannon Duffy, but we are also introduced to some very yummy guys.  Chase and Roman.   I personally leaned more towards Roman, because he had a little bit of a bad boy persona happening.  You weren’t quite sure whether he was a good guy, or a bad guy, but he was all sorts of sexy.   One thing that did frustrate me was the insta-love.  Yep, it happens.  I found myself shaking my head.   But apart from that, the storyline was amazing, and Shannon Duffy’s writing was fantastic.  I could completely picture the events happening in the book.  I loved the different plot twists found in Spectral, which completely kept my attention.  As you’re reading Spectral, you’re constantly guessing who could be genuine and want to help Jewel, or who is just twisting the truth to trick Jewel into trusting them.

Fans of stories involving witches will fall head over heels in love with Spectral…and and quite possibly, with Roman.  With all the magical elements found throughout Spectral, it’s not difficult to be completely entranced in this book.

That is a hard question. I am glad I really don’t have the choice. I would be torn from being selfish or selfless or somewhere in between.

That is really hard! Do I go with selfish or selfless. Selfish, serenity. Selfless, world peace.

It would be so tempting to have something selfish, but I think I would want a spell of complete healing and then use it for everyone.

  17. The ability to freeze time. I think that’s rather handy for someone like me who’s terribly clumsy. I think of all the vases and valuables I could save with that kind of witchy power. :D
