All Hannah needs is a nice and quiet vacation after her first year of teaching French at a high school. She joins her brother Ben for the summer in their mom’s log cabin in Arizona. There, she meets Josh again, Ben’s childhood friend from the Navajo reservation. The little boy from the rez has grown up fast, and Hannah can’t help but feeling more for him than just friendship.

But fate apparently has something else in store for her. And it’s not peace and quiet. Night after night, Hannah is plagued by strange nightmares about the past of Navajo Nation and terrifying shadows chasing her. They seem to come closer – and why is Josh always present in her dreams?

Sometimes, the past has a way of catching up with you.

Top Favs with Jen Minkman

Top 3 Favorite books that inspired you to write and why:

When I was young, I used to read a lot of fantasy, sci-fi and detective novels. One of the books that I kept re-reading was ‘The Tricksters’ by Margaret Mahy – a YA paranormal romance written before the genre even existed. David Edding’s books also inspired me to write my own epic fantasy stories. But the book which inspired me to write my book ‘Shadow of Time’ was ‘New Moon’ by Stephenie Meyer. Not that it’s about sparkly vampires and werewolves, but it is about Native Americans, two people drawn toward each other and true love that never dies. I really enjoyed reading New Moon (I stayed up all night to finish it) and I vowed I would write a page-turner like that myself.

Top 3 favorite songs to listen to while writing and why:

Actually, I write my own music for my books. While writing ‘Shadow of Time’, I wrote two songs that the main characters in the book sing – one of which was even used by a Navajo woman who wanted to play it at her wedding! She heard my song ‘In Beauty May I Walk’ on Youtube and contacted me to ask permission to use my music for her ceremony. Apart from listening to my own music, I tend to pick songs that set the mood for the type of book I am writing. For ‘Shadow of Time’, I listened to the Navajo Mountain Singers and Pow-wow Radio a lot. For my next book, ‘The Boy from the Woods’, I listened to piano music and Enya songs, because the main character is a pianist and loves new age and celtic music.

Top 3 favorite movies of all time and why:

I love romantic movies with a supernatural twist, such as ‘The Lake House’, ‘City of Angels’, ‘Twilight’ and ‘Beastly’, but my all-time favorite movies are still the ones I used to watch as a kid: ‘Labyrinth’ (that movie turned me into a huge David Bowie fan!), ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and all the Star Trek movies (geek!).

Top 3 Favorite Movie moments:

The moment where Edward saves Bella from the car that is about to ram her, in ‘Twilight’.

The moment where Jareth tells Jennifer Connelly: ‘Look, Sarah. Look at what I’m offering you. Your dreams.’, in ‘Labyrinth’.

Kirk and Spock’s final conversation (or so they think…), in which Spock tells Kirk: ‘I have been, and always shall be, your friend.’

Top 3 favorite actors/actresses and why:

Nicolas Cage – because he is so quirky.

Jennifer Connelly – because she is so beautiful and intense.

Kevin Spacey – because he is just an awesome actor and always picks the right movies to play in.

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why:

Right now, my number one dream destination is Arizona, because I have never been there, even though my book ‘Shadow of Time’ is set in Navajo Nation. I’d love to visit Antelope Canyon, Rainbow Bridge and Canyon de Chelly myself.

I also want to visit Greenland again. A few summers ago, I went camping in Kangerlussuaq and visited the ice-cap. I have never been to such an untouched country before in my life and would love to go back there someday and explore other parts of the country.

In a few years, my husband and I are planning to move to the Channel Islands for a while. Jersey is our island of choice, so I should put that place in my list of dream destinations as well! We’d love to work and study there for some time.

  1. What a great interview. Beauty and the Beast is one movie that I can probably narrate from start to finish. :) Mmmm Nicholas Cage. Thanks for sharing it.
