Lord of the Flies meets the 100.

Joey got separated from her twin brother Jesse when their luxury spacecraft broke apart halfway to Mars. The terrorists are dead, but so are most of the passengers who escaped a dying Earth for a new life on a new planet.

The remaining survivors, the future of humanity, are scattered across the lush planet of Mars. Joey and Kami are in a mountainous forest, and they’re locked in a power struggle to guide the people. Jesse and Rai landed on the coast, and are desperate to reach their sisters.

This new world can be a fresh start, where everyone is equal and class sectors are finally made obsolete, if only Kami would give up her self-appointed position as Commander of Mars. Both Joey and Kami are willing to die for their beliefs, even sacrificing the lives of those who’ve chosen to follow them, unless clearer heads can prevail before it’s too late.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

Thank you for having me! I’m excited to be here on Chapter by Chapter to chat about Serpents and Saviors.

Describe your book in 140 characters or less

The terrorists are dead, but the nightmare’s just begun as the Project Emergence crew fight to survive the Martian wilderness and each other.

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

I sat down to write the first book in this duology and a song I never heard came on my Pandora app. It was Escape by Rogue. As I listened to that song, the entire story of Project Emergence (including its sequel Serpents and Saviors) played out in my imagination. I went straight to work, and now here we are celebrating the release of Serpents and Saviors.

Tell us about the main character(s).

There’s Joey and her twin brother Jesse. They’re from Sector G; the most devastated of all the sectors on a sun-scorched Earth. They couldn’t afford an education, which is only available in sectors C and above, yet they made it on board the last shuttle heading to a newly terraformed Mars. Along the way, they befriend Kami and her twin brother Rai. Kami and Rai are celebrities, almost royalty as the children to Commander Sun; leader of the Unified Nations of Earth. Kami and Rai left their live of luxury to escape from beneath the shadow of their powerful mother and they won’t be outshined again, not by each other or their newfound friends.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

There is a lot in Serpents and Saviors that resonates strongly with me due to my own struggles with poverty, but there is one part that sticks out to me the most. Joey and her brother Jesse have been segregated their entire lives, judged by their monetary worth. Joey’s ideal for Mars was freedom. She wanted every person to live free, be who and what their heart’s desired, with no leaders to impose rules. But there is a scene where she realizes every group needs leadership, and it’s the type of leader that makes all the difference.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

There is a scene in Serpents and Saviors where the tide comes in to swallow the camp Jesse and Rai set up. This scene was particularly difficult for me to write due to the fact that Mars has two moons. Moons affect the tides, and currently Mars has no water. Earth has water but only one moon, so it was hard to predict how tides would react with two moons, especially when those moons came into alignment.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?

I’m glad you asked. Serpents and Saviors is the last novel for the Project Emergence crew, but I do have an exciting new story releasing with Month9Books. Superheroes Suck drops on June 26, 2018! This YA adventure is a realistic take on ordinary people who happen to have extraordinary abilities.

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!

It was great being here. I had a blast! Thanks for letting me ramble on, and I’ll be sure to stop by again soon.
