Know your enemy if you want to survive…

The only way for Khya to get her brother back alive is to kill Varan—the immortal ruler who can’t be killed. But not even Varan knew what he was doing when he perverted magic and humanity to become immortal.

Khya’s leading her group of friends and rebels into the mountains that hold Varan’s secrets, but if risking all their lives is going to be worth it, she has to give up everything else—breaking the spell that holds her brother captive and jeopardizing her deepening relationship with Tessen, the boy who has been by turns her rival and refuge since her brother disappeared. Immortality itself might be her only answer, but if that’s where Khya has to go, she can’t ask Tessen or her friends to follow.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

Absolutely! Thank you for having me to talk about Sea of Strangers.

Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)

The trials Khya faced in Itagami were just the beginning. Surviving Ryogo, though, might be more than even she can handle.

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

Second books are different. They’re harder in a lot of ways, and also a lot more hard work. Once the first book in a series is finished, everything in the rest of the series has to build from that foundation. Inspiration for those stories—in my experience, at least—almost never comes from a spark of lightning or a dream the way that it happens with new novels and series. This book in particular developed through trial and error and several long conversations with my editor. We talked about the world, the characters, the conflicts, and the themes for several hours each time, and that is how this book developed bit by bit.

Tell us about the main character(s).

The cast of this series is massive, but Khya, Sanii, Tessen, and Yorri are the heart of the story. Khya and her determination to do anything to save her brother, Tessen and his devotion to Khya, Sanii and eir relentless struggle to stay by Yorri’s side despite everything and everyone keeping them apart, and Yorri himself, who is at the center of so much even though he’s so far away from the rest of them. Everything in the story revolves around the bonds these four share with each other and the other people in their lives, and those ties are what drive the story forward.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

It’s so hard to pick! There are so many moments that stand out to me, and most of those I made into quote art that is up on my website. What I love is seeing which lines and moments readers connect with. It’s always so interesting to see what stands out to people!

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

The whole thing. All of it. This was something like the nineteenth book I wrote, but I had to scrap and rewrite the book twice. It’s more work and rewriting than I have done on a book since my debut novel. For months, it felt like there was no way this book was going to work. I am incredibly lucky to have an editor like Kate Brauning who is not only willing but able to push me to fix everything that was wrong in the book. She demanded a truckload of work from me, but she helped me make Sea of Strangers the story I wanted to tell. It definitely wasn’t an easy journey, though.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?

So many! I’m editing book 3 of the series right now, the final chapter of Khya’s story, and then I will be working on another series for Entangled Teen, this one set in space. I don’t have a release date for book 1 yet, but I cannot wait to dig into this series. There will be spaceships, intragalactic war, stowaways, cybernetics, and an impossible countdown. Additionally, I have some other side projects I’m playing with that will be amazingly fun (and/or bloody), but those will be several years down the line if they get picked up by a publisher at all. We shall see what the future holds!

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!

Thank you so much! I’m incredibly excited about this series, and it’s so wonderfully nerve-wrecking to know it’s finally out in the world.
