“The time for Kiero’s reign in prosperity is over.”

Six years before the Black Dawn Rebellion, Adair Stratton and Emory Fae are following in their parent’s footsteps and living at The Academy, a home for those who are gifted. The pressure to uphold the future of their parent’s dream falls on them. An outcast and feared by most, Adair longs to break away from the expectations dictating his future. Even if Emory tries to make him see differently. An unexpected group of friends keep him there, but as whispers of unexplained disappearances start reaching from the capital, Adair starts to doubt The Academy is all it seems.

An unexpected visit ignites new tensions as the roguish king from across the Black Sea, Tadeas Maher of the Shattered Isles, and his heir, Marquis Maher sail to Kiero. Notorious for their pirating and wrath- for the first time in years, they demand the Fae’s listen to their proposition for a new treaty, holding the news of Nei’s father’s abrupt death over them. Caught in the middle of politics- Adair and Emory, with the help of their best friends Brokk and Memphis search for the one thing that matters most- finding out the truth.

In this gripping prequel to Black Dawn, their world is tipped upside down as unlikely alliances are made. War ravages through Kiero and is torn apart by acclaimed Kings. Through the throes of betrayal, lies, hidden magic and love, Adair is faced with a life changing decision- to fight or to bow to the darkness within him.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

Thank you so much for having me!

Describe your book in 140 characters or less

This is it, where it all began. Welcome to the world of Kiero, before it all fell to ruin. Four friends trying to find their places within The Academy, and finding themselves along the way. Friendship, Trust, Betrayal. All will be unmade.

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

I remember the moment this book came to me. It was two years ago, during the winter. I was living in London at the time, and we just had a huge snowstorm.  I was sitting in the living room, working on Queen to Ashes, and this line came to me. “My name is Brokk Foster, and I will not break.” It’s corny to say but it was like being hit over the head, and it was so clear in my mind how the world fell into ruin. How Adair became the villain. The history between the Fae’s and the Stratton’s, so I began writing it.

Tell us about the main character(s).

The main characters in this book are Emory Fae, Brokk Foster, Adair Stratton, Memphis Carter with the introduction of Marquis Maher. Marquis is the prince of the Broken Isles, where Emory’s mom is from. The Fae’s and the Stratton’s built the Academy, a school where people with abilities can learn and grow their powers. Emory and Adair are best friends, finding solace in each other of upholding the pressures of their parent’s dream for peace. Brokk and Memphis are the underdogs in the story, both having found the Academy, Brokk not remembering his past and Memphis’s parents having thrown him out.  Renegade is a story about friendship and how deep the bonds go, through the navigation of their world being thrown into turmoil.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

I love when Marquis and Adair start to get to know each other. Specifically this part :

“Anyways, I will leave you now to your brooding thoughts.” Swiftly, he hopped off but not before lifting the corners of his mouth with a wicked glint shining in his eyes. “I’m Marquis, by the way. I’m sure I will be seeing you soon.” Gracefully, he bent in a mock bow and with that he strode back up to the Academy, his hands buried in his pockets. He didn’t look back at Adair once.  Shaking his head, Adair pushed the strange boy out of his mind.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

I had a difficult time writing Adair’s story. His storyline is pivotal to the rest of the series and explaining how he became the Mad King. But his story deals with abuse, depression, isolation, as well as battling the imprint of dark magic, so definitely writing his chapters I had step away. I got diagnosed with general anxiety disorder this year, so all that fear, anger, isolation I felt myself, I channeled into him, so it hit close to home.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?I’m so excited to announce Queen to Ashes, the sequel to Black Dawn, is releasing January 8th 2019. I am also working on the third book in the Black Dawn series, Kingdom of Broken Iron. As well as a new YA series that draws inspiration from Spawn and Sleeping Beauty, and a standalone contemporary novel with fantasy aspects.

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!
