Pretty-Dark-Nothing

It’s been twenty three days since Quinn has slept for more than minutes at a time. Demons have invaded her dreams, stalking her, and whispering of her death. The lack of sleep and crippling fear are ruining her life. Energy drinks and caffeine pills don’t make a dent. When Quinn dozes off in the school hallway, Aaron, an amnesiac with a psychic ability, accidentally enters her nightmare. The demons are determined to keep them apart, and Aaron from discovering the secret locked away in his memory. Together, they could banish the darkness back to the underworld for good. That is, unless the demons kill them first.

Top Favs with Heather L. Reid

You’re home alone, there’s a fire!  Top 3 things you’d grab and save from the fire.

HR-Fire

My laptop, wedding album, and of course my hubby!

Top 3 favorite techniques to overcome writers block and why:

HR-writer-block

1) Fresh Air- Sometimes you need to give your head space to think through a problem. Walking, swimming, doing something outside and away from the laptop can sometimes knock something loose and break through that block.

2) ‘Visualizing’- it’s a technique where I lay down and close my eyes. It may sound like napping, but the goal is not to fall asleep. The goal is to relax into a day-dreaming state. I play out the scene I’m working on in my mind and ask my characters for input. Then I play ‘what if’, picturing what could happen until I hit on something that feels right.

3) Painting- Sometimes doing something creative that’s not writing related helps me through a block. For me, painting is completely stress free. I put paint on the canvass, watching the colors swirl together. I don’t plan, I don’t use any techniques, most of the time I don’t even know what I’m painting. It’s completely free form, flowing, no editing, no stress, no fear, nobody will see it other than me. The act of complete improvisation can sometimes free the muse.

Top 3 favorite animated movies and why:

HR-animated

I’m a HUGE Disney fan and grew up watching all the classics, so picking a top three is going to be difficult. So I’ve bent the rules a little bit and decided to pick one from Pixar, one modern classic, and one classic.

1)      Beauty and the Beast. When it first came out, I went to the theatre no less than 7 times to see it. I can’t tell you how much I love this film. Belle is one of my all-time favorite Disney princesses, she’s strong and compassionate, and her ability to see who the beast truly was captured my whole heart. And who couldn’t love the beast? Yes, he was ugly, and rough around the edges, but deep down he had a good heart. I’m also a sucker for the music. Alan Menken and Howard Ashman created an amazing score that I love to listen to over and over again.

2)      Pixar, what can I say? I love them all! – If I HAVE to pick a favorite, it would be a tie between Toy Story and Finding Nemo.  Pixar is amazing at dialogue and telling a simple, beautiful story that both children and adults can relate to. There’s something magical about what they do.

3)      101 Dalmatians- Cruella DeVille has to be one of the best animated villains ever. You hate her from the moment she steps on screen. The puppies are so cute and I love the scene where they disguise themselves by rolling in the soot. A beautiful classic I could watch over and over again.

Top 3 favorite gadgets and why:

HR-gadgets

1) My laptop. I’m a digital writer which means I rarely use pen and paper for anything other than my personal journal. I outline, plot, write, edit, and revise all on my laptop. I can write inside or out in the garden. Sometimes I take it to a coffee shop or to the library to work. I couldn’t live without it!

2) Bread Machine- I have celiac disease, which means I can’t have any wheat or gluten in my diet. Wheat makes me very ill, kills the villi in my stomach, and keeps me from absorbing any nutrition from the food I eat. Essentially, eating too much wheat means I will eventually starve and my body will start to shut down. So, I can’t have normal bread. Yes, they sell gluten free bread in the stores, but most if it is not nice! So, I make my own whenever possible.

3)Xbox- I am a gamer girl and LOVE playing my x-box. Gaming is a stress reliever for me.

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why:

HR-Destination

1)      Italy. I love history, art, and architecture. Rome, Venice, Pompeii, I want to visit them all and soak up the culture. It’s been on my list ever since I can remember. I’ll get there some day!

2)      The Maldives- have you seen the pictures of the huts hovering out over the ocean? If not, you MUST google Maldives. It looks so beautiful and serene. I love the beach and swimming, so this would be paradise to me.

3)      Malta and Santorini, Greece-. Again, it’s all about the history. Malta boasts some of the oldest free standing temples on earth.  We’re talking older than the Stonehenge and the Pyramids! Also, the legend of Atlantis has always fascinated me, and I believe Santorini to be what’s left of the Atlantis Plato speaks of in his writings.
