According to Japanese legend, folding a thousand paper cranes will grant you healing.

Evelyn Abel will fold two thousand if it will bring Luc back to her.

Luc Argent has always been intimately acquainted with death. After a car crash got him a second chance at life—via someone else’s transplanted heart—he tried to embrace it. He truly did. But he always knew death could be right around the corner again.

And now it is.

Sick of hospitals and tired of transplants, Luc is ready to let his failing heart give out, ready to give up. A road trip to Oregon—where death with dignity is legal—is his answer. But along for the ride is his best friend, Evelyn.

And she’s not giving up so easily.

A thousand miles, a handful of roadside attractions, and one life-altering kiss later, Evelyn’s fallen, and Luc’s heart is full. But is it enough to save him? Evelyn’s betting her heart, her life, that it can be.

Right down to the thousandth paper crane.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

Kelley: Thanks so much for having us! We’re happy to be here.

Describe your book in 140 characters or less

Rowan: A boy, a girl, a transplanted heart, and a road-trip one of them might not come back from.

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

Kelley: I finally pestered Rowan into writing something with me. Euthanasia and the Death with Dignity act is something I’ve been fascinated by since I was in high school, so I thought it would be great for a book. I know the feelings in Luc and Evelyn’s story might come across as “you have too much to live for, don’t end your life” but I’m very passionately pro-euthanasia for terminally ill patients. Rowan came up with Luc’s character and told me to create his love interest, and it went from there.

Tell us about the main character(s).

Kelley: Evelyn is incredibly sweet, loyal, patient, and very much an optimist. She tends to bottle things up out of worry of coming across as a burden and a fear of not being taken seriously—which is something she battles throughout the book.

Rowan: Luc is a boy who’s spent much of his life sick. Because of that, he’s grown up pretty isolated and socially awkward but he hates to admit that. It makes him come across as a jerk a lot of the time.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

Kelley: So much of my favorite lines and parts would be spoilers. The last few chapters are some of my faves. Also, the butterfly house.

Rowan: The butterfly house would be it for me, too.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

Kelley: The ending, I suppose. When Rowan and I sent it to my editors, Stacy and Tara, we voiced to them the few ideas we had for endings. They ended up picking which one they liked best, then it was up to us to write it…under deadline. I need to stop doing that because deadlines absolutely wreck my ability to write.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?

Kelley: I have a few things in the works, including a new adult fantasy series, and an LGBT contemporary story that’s similar in feel to Suicide Watch.

Rowan: I wouldn’t call myself a career author. Seeing how this process works from beginning to end…it’s hard! I have ideas that I’ve started but haven’t finished.

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!

Thank you so much for having us!
