Welcome to our Tour Stop for

OCD, the Dude, and Me by Lauren Roedy Vaughn

presented by Pump Up Your Book!

We are thrilled to have author, Lauren Roedy Vaughn, stop by for a quick Q & A where she shares some of her Top Favs!

With frizzy orange hair, a plus-sized body, sarcastic demeanor, and “unique learning profile,” Danielle Levine doesn’t fit in even at her alternative high school. While navigating her doomed social life, she writes scathing, self-aware, and sometimes downright raunchy essays for English class. As a result of her unfiltered writing style, she is forced to see the school psychologist and enroll in a “social skills” class. But when she meets Daniel, another social misfit who is obsessed with the cult classic film The Big Lebowski, Danielle’s resolve to keep everyone at arm’s length starts to crumble.

Top Favs with Lauren Roedy Vaughn

You’re home alone, there’s a fire!  Top 3 things you’d grab and save from the fire.

Pictures of my nieces and nephews, a signed Beatles poster, an ancient copy of Hamlet that a student gave me

Top 3 Favorite authors (dead or alive) and why

Shakespeare (because of his poetry and insight), David Sedaris (because he makes me LOL), and Marianne Williamson (because her books are like a warm bath). It is very cruel to only allow a writer to list 3 favorite authors. I have hundreds of others. (And I feel like I dissed Anne Lamott, John Irving, Stephen King and a bunch of others whose books are screaming at me from my bookshelf. Sorry guys.)

Top 3 Favorite snacks while writing and why

Cucumbers…very cool and crispy, can be dipped into a variety of sauces for excitement

Dark chocolate…is an explanation really necessary?

Popcorn…so salty and fantastic…also, coupled with the dark chocolate…almost naughty

Top 3 Favorite books that inspired you to write and why

The Brothers K by David James Duncan. This is an epic story of love, brotherhood, and compassion. It is one of my all-time favorite books and its existence—the fact that someone could write this well and tell such a powerful story about humanity—inspires me. This book lives with me.

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. This is a wonderful book about writing. Anne Lamott writes so gently and her words inspired me to just write for myself because that is the gift. She is right. She also gives great advice that keeps you from hating yourself as you write. For that, I am eternally grateful.

On Writing by Stephen King. This is another gift of a book for any writer. It is smart, sane (not frightening or bloody) and his words, like Anne Lamott’s, help to keep your head in the right place as you write. When great writers are willing to write books about writing, I think that is a generous act. His is for sure. It is packed with honesty and wonderful tips about the writing process.

Top 3 favorite songs to listen to while writing and why.

I have too many songs to choose from. I gotta go with 3 favorite artists to listen to while writing: Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, and Tom Waits…because they all have soul and you need that when you write.

Top 3 favorite techniques to overcome writers block and why

Take a break and pretend you don’t care if you get an idea. For whatever reason, this usually works to trick my mind into giving me an idea. It’s like my creative mind gets sad that I’m not paying attention to it so it throws out a bone.

Ask your dreams to give you an idea. This may sound crazy but when I’ve been stuck before, I’ve said aloud, “Okay, I’m going to bed now. If you could go ahead and show me what you want me to have happen next, that’d be great.” And by “you,” I mean the story gods.

Write anyway. Just start writing junk. Usually I have an idea pop up from that. If I’m patient.

Top 3 favorite movies of all time and why

The Big Lebowski…because it is clearly the best movie ever (well, to me); every aspect is terrific—the writing, the filmmaking, the actors, the story. It sends a resonate message…to just chill instead of getting too uptight. I get super uptight, so I guess I need this movie. And, I think it is hilarious.

Raising Arizona—clearly, I am a sucker for the Coen Brothers.

The Trip…Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are brilliant together. You probably have to be a fan of their kind of humor to love this movie, but I am. Also, if you like great food, be aware that this movie will make you hungry. The two actors go on a road trip through the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales reviewing fine dining experiences. Delicious and hilarious.

Top 3 favorite animated movies and why

Toy Story 3. I liked all the Toy Story movies but this one grabbed my heartstrings. It was darker than the first two but even more poignant, I thought.

How to Train Your Dragon, I like movies that depict underdogs who learn there is power in being who they are.

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, ditto the above thematic statement and this movie reminds me of my childhood.

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why

Hawaii…I grew up in Honolulu and love to visit.

London…because there’s actual history there

New York City…lots to do and experience
