Naturals

Tess is finally safe from the reach of the Council, now that she is living in the Middlelands with the rebel Isolationists. With James having returned to Templeton, she easily falls back into her friendship with Henry, though her newfound knowledge of Robert’s chosen one status still stings. Even surrounded by people, Tess has never felt more alone. So she’s thrilled when James returns to the settlement, demanding to see Tess — until she finds out that it’s because her sister, Louisa, has been recruited into Tess’s old position at Templeton, and that the dangerously sadistic chosen one George has taken an interest in her.

Top Favs with Tiffany Truitt

Top 3 Favorite authors (dead or alive) and why:

TT-authors

This was a really hard one to narrow down. Seriously. It depends on the day and the mood that I am in at the time. Currently my favorite authors are:

1)      Shakespeare – He is classic for a reason. The way he manipulates language to create ambiguity, encouraging the reader to become an active participant in the story, is awe-inspiring. He has inspired quite a bit of the Lost Souls trilogy.

2)      Jane Austen – I will always admire this lady for her use of wit. Her stories may seem simple from the outside, but a closer analysis of her work proves that her talent has and will inspire love stories for centuries.

3)      John Green – I just read him.  How I managed to go so long without reading this man’s work is baffling.  My favorite thing about his writing style, besides that it breaks my heart in devastatingly beautiful ways, is that he doesn’t talk down to his reader. YA label be damned.

Top 3 Favorite snacks while writing and why:

TT-snacks

Hot fries. Coffee. More Hot fries.  When I get into that writing zone, I only want things that are bad for me! Hot fries and coffee are my go to snacks every single time I enter that cave. So good, yet so bad.

Top 3 Favorite books that inspired you to write and why:

TT-Books

I love writers. Simply love them. I have worked to infuse some of my favorite works into the Lost Souls trilogy. For the second book in the series, The Naturals, I reference two works: Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles.  Both of these stories deal with themes of identity and defining otherness. These are two themes very important to the second installment of the series.

Top 3 favorite songs to listen to while writing and why:

TT-Music

This really depends on the mood and setting of the novel. I listened to a lot of movie and television scores while I wrote the first and second books in this series. Since the world wasn’t set in present day, but rather a dystopian future, it was hard to stay in the zone listening to contemporary music with words. That’s not to say I don’t have my own Naturals playlist….

Top 3 favorite techniques to overcome writers block and why:

TT-writers-block

Funny you should ask this because I had the BIGGEST case of writer’s block while working on The Naturals. But I learned some tricks to helping get through this:

1). Hang out with friends – Not every day needs to be a writing day. Sometimes, you just need a night out. Step away from the computer.

2) Concerts – I went to two music festivals last summer (Lollapalooza and Firefly). Having the ability to leave behind my normal life and loose myself in music for days at a time was the perfect release. I am in the middle of writing the third book now, and I try to catch a show whenever I can.

3) hmm….just breathe…it will be alright.

About the Author:

Tiffany Truitt

Tiffany Truitt was born in Peoria, Illinois. A self-proclaimed Navy brat, Tiffany spent most of her childhood living in Virginia, but don’t call her a Southerner. She also spent a few years living in Cuba. Since her time on the island of  one McDonalds and Banana Rats (don’t ask), she has been obsessed with traveling. Tiffany recently added China to her list of travels (hello inspiration for a new book).

Besides traveling, Tiffany has always been an avid reader. Tiffany spent most of her high school and college career as a literary snob. She refused to read anything considered “low brow” or outside the “classics.”

Tiffany began teaching middle school in 2006. Her students introduced her to the wide, wonderful world of Young Adult literature. Today, Tiffany embraces popular Young Adult literature and uses it in her classroom. Tiffany is proud to call herself an educator and Young Adult author.
