Four months after Gramp’s mysterious death, Nate helps out at Gram’s garage sale. An eerie feeling, as if Gramps were reaching beyond the grave to send Nate a message, leads Nate to a box full of clues. A missing plane. A secret to keep. A map highlighting the route where Gramps died and the message, “Shipment #35-Gold.” Nate and his best friend, Simon, are convinced that Gramps was on a treasure hunt when he died. They’re just as convinced that Gram’s shifty next door neighbour, Fortier, is after the gold too. Nate and Simon sneak away on a Greyhound bus for the small town of Paradise where Nate is sure treasure awaits. Can they find the gold before Fortier gets his thieving hands on a treasure that rightfully belongs to Gramps?

Chapter-by-Chapter-header---Excerpt

Frenzied activity took up the next forty-five minutes. Dashing to the corner to catch the transit bus. Transferring to another. Arriving at the Greyhound terminal. Racing to the ticket counter with just minutes to spare –
“Yes?” the man at the ticket counter said briskly. “Can I help you?” Like the buses, he seemed to be on a tight schedule.
“We’d like two tickets to Paradise.” I dumped a pile of bills and loose coins on the counter.
The ticket agent, a little balding man with raisin-like eyes, studied me then looked at Simon. “How old are you?” he asked.
According to the Greyhound website, children fourteen and under required someone older to travel with them on the bus.
Simon stretched himself to his full height which brought him almost up to my armpit.
“I’m almost thirteen,” he announced proudly.
The man’s raisin eyes narrowed. “You sure don’t look it.”
“He is.” I straightened my shoulders and deepened my voice to seem older. “I can vouch for him.” I checked the clock above the ticket booth. “Please sir. We’ll miss our bus if we don’t hurry.”
The agent muttered something under his breath that sounded like “Darn kids. What’s the world coming to?” He tapped a few keys on the computer and presented us with two tickets. “Gate Four. Better run.”
