A girl looking for a way out.

Being the daughter of New America’s leader, Mercury Masters has everything a girl could want. A glamorous life full of beautiful people, and the power to have anything she wants, except for one thing—to escape. Because Mercury’s perfect life comes with secrets to keep. Dangerous secrets that if made public would destroy her, her family, and her father’s reign. Then she meets Hawk.

A boy looking to be a hero.

Hawk, a handsome prep school dropout turned vigilante, has his own family secrets. Deadly secrets that have haunted him since he was fifteen. But instead of fighting the ghosts of his past, Hawk has assembled a group of misfit hackers and thieves to save the future from the corrupt government of New America and the mysterious virus that is killing off its citizens. But trying to do the right thing is tough when the person you really want to save is your enemy’s daughter.

A love that could kill them both.

Powerful forces keep them apart, but coming together could be the key to saving New America from destruction—even though it may cost both their lives.

A near-future YA biopunk retelling of Robin Hood.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

Hello there, and thanks for having me by the blog today. I’m really excited to be able to talk to you about my debut novel, MERCURY RISES. It’s a story I loved to write with a fantastic cast of characters. I can’t wait for people to read it!

Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)

A near-future retelling of Robin Hood from the point of view of a rebellious 17 year-old Maid Marian named Mercury. Romance, intrigue, and government conspiracy.

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

This story was a product of smashing together a few different ideas. I had originally planned to write my Robin Hood story as a cute contemporary high school romance, but during the outlining phase I went for a walk and saw this old hotel downtown and a scene started to form in my head. I got back to my office and the words just flowed out, and it became the basis for the first chapter of Mercury. However, this character wasn’t a cute contemporary romance kind of girl. She had a past she was running from, a darkness to hide from, and an attitude to take on anything. The two concepts started swirling in my brain and eventually I realized that this character was my Maid Marian and the contemporary romance wasn’t the story I was meant to tell.

Tell us about the main character(s).

Mercury Rises is a re-imagining of Robin Hood, so many of the characters are archetypes from the classic legend.

Mercury Masters – She’s my Maid Marian and basically the country’s first daughter. A private school princess with a rebellious streak who doesn’t buy into the government propaganda that her father’s administration is selling.

Hawk – My Robin. A trust fund kid who turns vigilante after the death of his parents. A compelling leader, he’s charming, smart, stealth, and definitely hot.

Christophe – The Sheriff. He’s Mercury’s ex-boyfriend and intern for her father.

Tucker, Red and Ratchett – These are Hawk’s merry men (and women). Tucker is a party boy with a big mouth. Red is bold, brash, and deadly with her hands. Ratchett is the brains and can hack into anything.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

There are so many great scenes between Hawk and Mercury that I loved, but in this particular scene they have been arguing as Mercury has defied him in front of his crew, but the argument twists and isn’t really about what Hawk thinks it is (sorry, no spoilers). The lines below might not have the same impact out of context, but this scene is emotional and important and tells so much about the two of these characters.

I turned around and reached for the doorknob, but Hawk grabbed my arm and tugged me back. Instinct tried to shake him off but he was too strong, too determined, and from the look on his face, I knew he wasn’t trying to hurt me.

“Don’t go around trying to self-destruct, Mercury. I’ve been there. It’s not worth it.”

“And what happens if I do?”

“I won’t let you.” His grip relaxed on my bicep, his stormy eyes calm and clear like June blue skies. “I promise.”

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

There is a scene in the second last chapter between Mercury and her father. It was excruciating because of the darkness that comes out of these characters in that scene, and the awful things that they do to each other. I had to re-write it several times because I couldn’t get it to say what I wanted it to. It’s tying up a character arc, it’s emotionally charged, and it just…well…hurt to write it.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?

I actually do have a new book coming out! In March, I have a YA paranormal coming from Evernight Teen called WICKED DESCENT.

The day Avery Belmont was born her father disappeared. Now after seventeen years, Avery returns to her hometown and awakens the dark family secrets he left behind. Secrets that connect her to the caustic and handsome Drew Montgomery. Secrets that probably should have stayed buried.

Other than that, I am finishing up the draft of a dual-POV YA paranormal romance based in Scottish mythology, tentatively called KEEPER OF SHADOWS. Hopefully I’ll find a home for it soon. I’m also putting some pieces together for another story in the MERCURY RISES universe.

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!

Thank you! I was glad to come visit, and I would absolutely stop by again. Hopefully you enjoyed this sneak peek into MERCURY RISES and I really hope that readers love the story as much as I loved writing it.
