I didn’t know when I wrote the first love spell that it would actually make things happen. Like, actually make people fall in love with each other…

How could I have known something like that? I mean, magic isn’t real, right?

But here’s the thing—the spell does work and so does the next one and the next one…and suddenly I’m getting a whole lot of attention from everyone at my high school. Me, Blend-into-the-Walls, Please-Let-Me-Introvert-in-Peace Rowan Marshall. And not only that, but I’ve also caught the attention of Luca Russo, a godlike, football-playing hottie who claims he likes me just the way I am. Ummm…

But as I’m about to learn, playing around with things you don’t understand means when things go wrong—like really, very awfully wrong—you don’t know how to fix them.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

I’m so happy to be here and I’m excited to talk about Love Spells and Other Disasters. Thanks for having me!

Describe your book in 140 characters or less

17yr old Rowan Marshall had no idea the love spells would work…until they actually did. When her love connections start to go haywire, she needs to sacrifice something big in order to save the ones she loves. No pressure, right?

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

I was on the hunt for a new magic realism idea and when I’m in that zone, I start with doing some research and reading about the genre I’m hunting in. I also, and this might sound weird, tell my brain to get to work and let the universe know I’m on the hunt for a new idea. Then I let my brain and the universe sort it out for me and it always does.

I was sitting on the couch in my living room chatting with my daughter about some ideas that had started to filter into my head and all of a sudden it hit me…what if a young girl writes a love spell for a class project and it actually works?

Tell us about the main character(s).

Roman Marshall is 17 years old, the daughter of a renowned Parapsychologist and also a non-believer in anything even remotely connected to her mother’s work. She’s a loner with only one best friend, Ethan, and her goal is to survive high school so that she can get away from the people who think she’s a giant weirdo because of who her mom is.

Luca Russo is a former football superstar athlete who has had to abandon his dream due to too many head injuries. He’s pursuing an apprenticeship and doing work with a local carpenter in Rowan’s house when they meet. He’s sweet and considerate, mature and respectful, a true cinnamon roll kind of hero. He’s always wanted to talk to Rowan but because he was already in a relationship, couldn’t. When his relationship ended, and he had the chance to work in Rowan’s family home, he knew he’d get his chance to finally talk to her.

Even though Ethan isn’t a main character, I want to talk about him too. Ethan is the embodiment of so many students I’ve taught. He’s a caring, devoted friend who loves Rowan deeply and embraces her strange life like all best friends should, with full support, a shoulder to cry on, and no judgement. He is true to himself and one of the bravest people Rowan has ever known.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

I love the part of the book where Rowan and Luca are at the house party and Luca stops Rowan from doing something she probably would regret the next day. I don’t want to give too much away but I wrote that scene and immediately fell in love with Luca myself so I hope readers do too. Luca is a great guy.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

I didn’t have any one part of writing this book that stumped me but editing this book was difficult at times. I had work to do on some aspects of my craft, especially around certain kinds of description and my wonderful editor pointed me in the right direction so I could learn some new skills to enhance my writing. The end result is probably the best writing I’ve ever done so I’m eternally grateful to my editor for giving me the tools to learn how to write some of the scenes with more power.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?

At the moment, I’m storing out the plot for my next two books so once those get a green light I can begin writing. I’m hoping to follow Love Spells and Other Disasters up with another twisty-turny romantic magic realism.

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!

Thank you so much for having me!
