Jagger Jones is a whiz kid from Chicago’s South Side. Ask him anything about Ancient Egypt, and Jagger can fill hours describing all that he knows. But when he and his precocious little sister Aria fall more than three thousand years back in time to the court of Amarna, Egypt, Jagger discovers a truth that rocks his world: books don’t teach you everything there is to know.
Mummies, pyramids, and cool hieroglyphics make awesome movie props, but the ancient court of Amarna is full of over-sized scorpions, magical amulets, and evil deities determined to scare unwanted visitors away. If Jagger and Aria are to return safely home, they must find nine soul-infested gemstones, defeat an evil general, save the royal family, and figure out how to rescue themselves!
Armed only with Jagger’s knowledge of history and a few modern objects mined from his pockets and Aria’s sparkly purse, the siblings have exactly one week to solve supernatural riddles and rescue the royal family. If they can pull it off, Jagger Jones just might return to Chicago a hero.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!

Thanks for having me. I’m excited for the world to meet Jagger Jones and chatting with bloggers has been a fun part of his introduction.

Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)

South Side Chicago whiz kid, Jagger Jones, and his little sister Aria fall back in time to ancient Egypt. They use their wits, and a few modern objects, to battle magical forces and save a princess’s afterlife and, by extension, their own family. And then they have to get back home!

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?

My son inspired the book and the main character, Jagger.  When he was nine years old, he told me he wanted to read a book about a kid who looked like him lost in ancient Egypt. As an Egyptologist and a writer, I figured I should be the one to write that book.

Tell us about the main character(s).

Jagger is book smart, cynical, and overprotective of his little sister (she got the street smarts).  He doesn’t believe in anything not proven by science. So when a magical ankh amulet transported he and his sister back in time, well, let’s just say it took him a minute to adjust and figure out how to make his modern worldview, and technology, work for them in the past.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?

I love the spots where I’ve managed to blend the ancient and modern. For example, when Mut, the ancient magician sidekick, needs wax for a magic spell but has none on hand. Aria pulls gum from her purse and voila, spell successful. And I’m pretty happy with the historical people, places and objects I’ve stuffed between killer scorpions and evil gods.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?

I struggled with the beginning. Because of the unfamiliar setting and the strange names and the plot set up, I had a hard time figuring out where to start the story. In the end, I wanted to give readers a glimpse of Jagger’s South Side Chicago world, so the book starts with him heading to the airport, to catch a flight to Egypt, with his mom and little sis.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?

Book two is in the works. I don’t want to give much away, but let’s just say fans of Aria should like what’s coming next.

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!

Thanks so much for having me.
