Top Favs with Caroline T. Patti

You’re home alone, there’s a fire!  Top 3 things you’d grab and save from the fire.

  1. My copy of To Kill A Mockingbird.
  2. My wedding ring.
  3. My laptop.

Top 3 Favorite authors (dead or alive) and why

Sandra Brown. I have read nearly every mystery she’s ever published and I love them all.

Scott Fitzgerald. I’m obsessed with him and Zelda.

Lois Duncan. I spent my entire childhood in the library reading and rereading everything she wrote. A Stranger with my face is my favorite.

Top 3 Favorite snacks while writing and why

Currently, I’m scarfing down Red Vines like they’re going out of style.

Chips and guacamole. I’m from California. We have an avocado consumption quotient to fill.

Milk Duds. They are my Achilles Heel.

Top 3 Favorite books that inspired you to write and why

Homecoming by Cynthia Voight. It’s brilliant. It’s heartbreaking. I want to be able to tell stories that are compelling.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares. I can’t explain the bond I have to this book. It’s deep and it’s real.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. I want to be Jo March.

Top 3 favorite songs to listen to while writing and why

Into the Dark by Death Cab For Cutie. The lyrics inspired the title.

The Giving Tree by Plain White Trees. The song is obviously inspired by the book, The Giving Tree. It reminds me so much of my characters.

Carry On by Fun. It’s an anthem style song. It makes me think of battles to be won.

Top 3 favorite techniques to overcome writers block and why

  1. Walk away. If I’m stuck, I leave it. My mind needs time to process.
  2. Aimee Bender, writer, once wrote in an article that she started out by writing two hours a day. Two straight hours, no distractions, and always stop when the two hours are up. It’s easier to come back to a story that’s mid conversation or mid scene. It’s much more difficult to get going the next day if you’re starting at the beginning every time. Sage advice and I follow it. I may go under or over the two hours, but I always leave when the going gets good.
  3. Read a book. Listen to music. Inspiration is usually there.

Top 3 musicians/bands/groups and why

Indigo Girls. They’ve been my favorite since the 7th grade.

Counting Crows. I love that their music is poetry.

Patti Page. Her music reminds me of my grandpa.

Top 3 favorite movies of all time and why

Savannah Smiles. I’ve loved it my whole life.

The Godfather. I’m Sicilian and this movie is my people, sort of. It does include my family sauce recipe. Also, I never sit with my back to the door in a restaurant.

Halloween. Best slasher movie ever. I watch it every year on Halloween.

Top 3 favorite animated movies and why

Beauty and the Beast. She’s a book nerd!

Toy Story. I wrote stories about my toys when I was little. To me, they were alive.

Meet the Robinsons. What great family!

Top 3 favorite movie moments and why

Fried Green Tomatos. When Idgie goes to the window and turns back and Ruth is gone.

Little Women. When Jo goes to the window and turns back and Beth is gone.  Both of these make me ugly cry EVERY TIME.

Hoosiers. When they win it all. I coached basketball for 25 years. It’s every coach’s dream to take a little team and make them great.

Top 3 favorite actors/actresses and why

Wynona Ryder. She was my style icon growing up.

Molly Ringwald. Same reason. I wanted her clothes.

Reese Witherspoon. There’s just something about her. I adore her.

Top 3 favorite gadgets and why

I could not live without my phone. It’s practically an appendage.

My universal remote control. I’m super lazy. I only want to use one remote.

My laptop because it holds all my stories.

Top 3 favorite dream destinations and why

Santorini, Greece. It looks majestic.

Mackinac Island. I read about it in a magazine once. Apparently there are no cars allowed so in winter the snow is always pure, and the only way to get around is horse-drawn carriage. I want to spend at least one Christmas there before I die.

The Isle of Sark. It would be like traveling back in time. My mother and I have it on our bucket list.
