Imposter

Can Tessa pose as Madison . . . and stop a killer before it’s too late?

Tessa is a Variant, able to absorb the DNA of anyone she touches and mimic their appearance. Shunned by her family, she’s spent the last two years training with the Forces with Extraordinary Abilities, a secret branch of the FBI. When a serial killer rocks a small town in Oregon, Tessa is given a mission: she must impersonate Madison, a local teen, to find the killer before he strikes again.

Tessa hates everything about being an impostor—the stress, the danger, the deceit—but loves playing the role of a normal girl. As Madison, she finds friends, romance, and the kind of loving family she’d do anything to keep. Amid action, suspense, and a ticking clock, this super-human comes to a very human conclusion: even a girl who can look like anyone struggles the most with being herself.

Cover Design Spotlight

Imposter2

I absolutely love my cover. But it wasn’t the first cover that I was shown for Impostor. I got two other cover suggestions first. They were beautiful in their own ways, but not quite the perfect fit. On my own I probably would have been happy with both covers, and that’s exactly why I’m grateful that more people are involved in the process, people who know more about design and marketing than I do.

I asked my editor, the lovely Caroline Donofrio, to tell you a bit more about the process of creating a cover and here’s what she had to say:

IMPOSTOR is so many things – a mystery, a thriller, and even a bit of a romance. When trying to come up with any cover concept, you want to do the best possible job capturing the essence of the book, but also create a gorgeous package that will appeal to readers, stand out on a shelf, and of course, make the author happy. With some projects you land upon a perfect cover almost immediately, but more often it’s a process. Sometimes it can be kind of a long process… such was the case with Impostor.

Initially, we started out with a jacket that felt extremely sci-fi in nature. It was dark and glossy, ethereal and intriguing. Unfortunately though, it didn’t really capture the tone of the book. So we went back to the drawing board, discussing possible directions until we arrived at the concept you see today. The final cover felt perfect. It’s both beautiful and tough, and conveys a sense of action. The broken shards suggest fragility. It felt like the perfect layering of elements to symbolize our heroine, Tessa.

The jacket was designed by the incredibly talented Theresa Evangelista (http://www.tevangelista.com/covers.html), whose work you may recognize from Ally Condie’s MATCHED, REACHED and CROSSED, as well as from Gordon Dahlquist’s THE DIFFERENT GIRL.

If I had Tessa’s gift I’d like to be Miley Cyrus’s Imposter and go on a date with the one and only Liam Hemsworth!

  3. I’m embarrassed to admit it but I do sometimes judge books by it’s cover. It really interests me how Authors or the cover designers come up with the covers as so many covers, especially now are just stunning!
