Katie thought she knew where her life was going. She was dating the captain of the football team, had a BFF for life, and everyone at school wanted to be her. But then her pregnant teen sister’s pregnancy changes all that. Everyone dumps her, including her friends and boyfriend.

Hey, Katie, welcome to life at the bottom of the high school food chain. This is how the other half lives.

Then there’s Nick. He’s a straight-A student and self-professed geek who’s had a thing for her since middle school. He needs a date for the winter formal, and Katie needs something to keep her busy. Nick’s plight becomes her personal pet project. She will help him get over his insecurities and get a date. Besides, she was popular once. She knows how to get dates.

But Nick has other plans. He’s going to use these “dating” lessons as a way to win Katie’s heart.

Thanks so much for taking the time and spending time with us here at Chapter by Chapter!
Hi! Thanks so much for having me! I’m excited to be here!!

Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)
A self-professed geek uses dating lessons from a mean-girl-turned-social-leper—and the girl he’s crushed on 4ever—as a way to win her heart.

What was your inspiration for writing this book?  Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?
This one came about a little less organically than the other books I’ve written. I wanted the book to complement FINDING MR. DARCY: HIGH SCHOOL EDITION, my previous Swoon Romance title, so it was natural to go along with the literature theme. After I decided on Shakespeare, the rest of it just kind of fell into place. I love stories where geeks prevail so that was a must! And I also had been playing around with the idea of a redeemed mean girl and thankfully, it fit together.

Tell us about the main character(s).
I just love Nic. Out of all the characters I’ve written, he reminds me the most of my husband and what I imagine my husband would’ve been like in high school. So yeah, definitely a soft spot there. J Nic is one of those cute, dorky guys—glasses, video game T-shirts, that sort of thing—the type you’re, or at least I’m, always rooting for to either get the girl or stand up to the bully.

Katie I’m so interested in because she used to be the mean girl type and now she’s not. No, it wasn’t her choice to fall down the social ladder, but she’s a better person because of it. She grows a lot throughout the book and I love that about her. She can admit she was wrong and take the steps necessary to make it right.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?
Here’s one of my favorite quotes. It’s Katie thinking about Nic.

Nic had one of those carbon copy memories when it came to literature. Words just stuck inside him like fly paper. As he recited the poem, I pictured the words catching to the paper and hanging on for dear life. I wished the inside of me looked like the inside of Nic.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?
The middles are always difficult for me because I love starting a book and I love to write the ending. J I usually write out as much as I can write, then when I get to the middle I have to stop and plot a little to get to where I need to go for the ending.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now.  Any new books coming out?
Yes! I’m most excited about ABBY AND THE CUTE ONE! If you’ve been following along with the Backstage Pass Series and Seconds to Juliet’s tour, I’m sure you’re waiting on this one. I can’t wait to share it with you all either! For those of you who don’t know, ABBY AND THE CUTE ONE is the fifth installment of the multi-authored Backstage Pass Series, which chronicles the lives of five adorably cute boy band members and the girls they fall in love with! Lots and lots of kissing! You can check the series out here: http://backstagepassbooks.com/ and we’ve got awesome boy band songs and giveaways going on at the FB page: https://www.facebook.com/Backstagepassbooks?ref=hl

It was great having you on the blog today!  We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success in your writing future!!
Thanks SO much! I’d love to come by again! =)

    Erin Reply:

    Hi Mai,

My advice is to write a book you would want to read. If you write something you would read, then you’ll have fun and it’ll be a lot less like work when the work gets tough. :)
