Recipe for a Swoon Worthy Character

Ah, the secret to the swooniness of the swooniest of characters! This is definitely a hard one.

I tend to think it is all about combinations of the qualities we think we are looking for in a ‘swoon worthy’ character and also the surprising characteristics that we never realized were actually enticing as well.

For me, I think it is the character flaws and physical quirks that make someone so swoon worthy. It is also a certain intensity that comes from particular characters. We might not see it straight away but then, as we get to know them better, and as the character develops and becomes more passionate about something or someone we get to see how far they will go, how strong they are, how determined. And let’s face it, a determined guy is definitely one who causes swooning.

I think there are characters out there that get everything right. They look the part, have incredible and perfect bodies, say all the right things, never let the other characters or readers down. I suppose they are the characters that we should be fanning ourselves over, but for me, it doesn’t work that way. I want to see characters that make mistakes but when they realize what they have done and how they might’ve hurt other people in their recklessness, I need to see them move heaven and earth to make things right, no matter the cost.

So I think, in the end, the swooniness really comes from a combination of softness, action, imperfection and determination. Of reading about a character who we instinctually know will most probably destroy hearts even as he wins them over. And someone who we, as readers, get to have an insight into that is not the mask he might parade behind to everyone else. And eyes. Come on, the eyes have got to be great!
