First, a little something about the book, and our thoughts…

It starts with a whisper: “It’s time for you to know who you are…”

Violet Eden dreads her seventeenth birthday. After all, it’s hard to get too excited about the day that marks the anniversary of your mother’s death. As if that wasn’t enough, disturbing dreams haunt her sleep and leave her with very real injuries. There’s a dark tattoo weaving its way up her arms that wasn’t there before.

Violet is determined to get some answers, but nothing could have prepared her for the truth. The guy she thought she could fall in love with has been keeping his identity a secret: he’s only half-human—oh, and same goes for her.

A centuries-old battle between fallen angels and the protectors of humanity has chosen its new warrior. It’s a fight Violet doesn’t want, but she lives her life by two rules: don’t run and don’t quit. When angels seek vengeance and humans are the warriors, you could do a lot worse than betting on Violet Eden…

** This book was provided to us by the publisher for an honest review.
We were in no way paid for our opinion **

I loved this book! One of the big reasons this book was great was that I was introduced to Phoenix *sigh*. He is just all sorts of sexy! I mean, sure, we are introduced first to Lincoln is hot and drool worthy, but I have a soft spot for bad(ish) boys and Phoenix stole my heart. I mean, hello…powers to make kissing and making out feel even more sexy-time? I’ll take some of that please! And the forest scene?! Seriously, go out and get the book and experience that! And how fantastic is her best friend, Steph?

I really enjoyed that the main character, Violet Eden (aka Vi) was not some meek, mindless girl who allowed everyone to walk all over her. Violet is one tough cookie! A little reminiscent of a little someone named Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Phoenix reminds of A LOT of Jace from Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments with a pinch of Patch from Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush. Although there is a love triangle in this book between Vi, Phoenix and Lincoln, it’s not really the typical kind you would find in other books where the main heroine is with one guy, but sneaking off with the other, or where one guy is pretty much stalking the other couple and cause some havoc. No, because of Vi’s personality and attitude, she pretty much avoids the whole conflict thing…well, as much as she can anyways. Shirvington does a fantastic job writing this “love triangle” that I didn’t find myself huffing and puffing, or rolling my eyes. It was just perfect!

The storyline for Embrace is fantastic! I am in love with the whole angel genre and the good angel, fallen angel twists. I just can’t get enough of it! Shirvington has successfully written her own twist to the angel tales. One that I feel will explode and have fans/readers clamoring to find out more about these unforgettable characters she has created. The world that Shirvington has created in Embrace is one that I completely lost myself in. Everything was described perfectly and with just enough detail that I was able to envision everything around me. I was able to make distinct faces for the characters, which in turn enabled me to grow fonder of the book. There were a few “suspenseful” parts throughout the book that I thought were exceptionally executed, and had me racing through the pages to find out what was going to happen next. Don’t get me started on the twists that she intricately weaved in the book.

I devoured this book in just under a day. I dreamt, ate, slept Embrace. I couldn’t get enough, and I absolutely cannot WAIT to see what Jessica Shirvington has next for these cast of characters in the next installment, ENTICE, scheduled for September 2012. Not only were the main characters unforgettable, but the supporting characters were just as memorable. The only part that probably urked me a little was the lack of parentage. Well, the missing mother couldn’t be helped because of the fact that she is dead, but the father not being a constant because he has to work all the time? Ok, ok it wasn’t that bad. In fact, if it weren’t for that, then the humour in him finally acting fatherly when Phoenix is around wouldn’t have been so hilarious! Kudos to Shirvington for spinning that aspect of the story and turning it into another reason why this book was great.

Fans of angels (fallen, guardian or other) will truly enjoy Embrace. Who is your favorite? Team Phoenix? Or Team Lincoln?

Where Are You From?

In my first draft of EMBRACE (there were eight!), I didn’t set the city. I was in two minds the entire time. I suppose I was drawing on all the places I have been around the world. Although I now live in Sydney, when I started to write EMBRACE, my family and I had just moved back from six years living in London. And prior to that, I’d spent quite a lot of time travelling to many cities around the world – so much so, that when I was writing scenes in EMBRACE, I found myself thinking of different cities around the world and never being able to truly decided which one most suited Violet’s world.

In my second and third and fourth drafts, I chose different cities (I’ll never tell) from around the world and set Violet’s story there. But each time, it felt forced.

I wanted her to live in a city, as opposed to some small town where all these major apocalyptic events just miraculously found her. To be believable she had to be in a metropolitan environment, but which one?

In the end, the answer was … any of them, and none of them. It wasn’t that the cities I chose didn’t work; it was that in my mind I’d amalgamated them into what I needed for her story to work for me. So I made the decision to give that option to all of my readers and simply called her city, the City.

It isn’t the ‘done thing’ usually, but I believe for this story, it works. I want readers to be able to put this story where they know. If they live in a city, it can be there, if they live in a rural area, then it isn’t a stretch for them to imagine a city nearby. It is an element of control that I wanted to give to the reader.

That said, I like a little control myself … and I discovered that by giving this open setting for Violet’s hometown, it also opened up the possibility to use other locations around the world that would really pop off the page.

In ENTICED (the sequel, out in September!), Violet and her friends find themselves travelling to Jordan – on a quest to the place of Moses’ death – Mount Nebo. In EMBLAZE (book 3, out March 2013) they travel to the island of Santorini in Greece, which is small and stunning, and holds terrors that none of them are prepared for.

Each book I take the characters somewhere new and as I write the series, I have discovered how very important this is to me. I want my characters to go to the world, to find the problems and be part of the solution, rather than the fight always, and too conveniently, finding them.

Guardian – I find that those books tend to take a step further from the religious aspects inherent in angels moreso than the fallen angel books.

Phoenix sounds awesome. I like him better, without having read the book, because Lincoln just is not a sexy name.

Hmmm, fallen or guardian angels? That's a tough one. They each have their good points and bad points. I think that instead of choosing which type of angel I would choose, I would take each angel on his/her own merits.

  7. What a great review! Phoenix sounds delish, and how cool is his name?
Fallen Angels! No question about it, there is something so alluring about Fallen Angels, most don't want to be Fallen, you can't help but have a soft spot for them :)

Seventeen years old, half human. That's how a lot of teens feel, especially young girls who are trying to find out who they are and what path their lives will take. I hope I win this book so one day my granddaughters will read it.

Completely depends on the book, I reckon. Sometimes my answer will be Guardian because who doesn't want their own Guardian Angel to protect you and keep you safe? On the other hand, Fallen Angels do have the tendency to be, how should I put this, incredibly, smokingly hot. Like I said, it just depends on the book. Akiva from Daughter of Smoke and Bone is my #1 choice as of now, though!

    Thanks for the giveaway!
