Seventeen-year-old Tate is about to make her parents’ dreams come true. Unfortunately for her, their dreams foretell her death.

Eager to explore more of the Estilorian plane and prove her abilities, Tate goes against her parents’ wishes and leaves the area of protection surrounding her home. Her choice puts her on a deadly path…one that leaves her alone, severely injured and battling for her life.

Her possible savior arrives in the form of Zachariah, a male who has removed himself from Estilorian society for more than fifty years. Fighting an unexpected connection to Tate, he must decide whether saving her life is worth destroying his.

As Tate struggles to find a way home, she ends up drawn into a dark Mercesti plot involving multiple murders and a powerful ancient artifact. With the unpredictable Zachariah as her only source for aid, she’ll soon find out if her abilities are strong enough to help her defy her Fate.

** This book was provided to us for the purpose of this tour, and for an honest review.
We were in no way paid for our opinion.  **

When I first started reading Defy by author Raine Thomas, I went in with my eyes completely shut. I just want to say that the one thing that I am glad for, when I began the novel, was the dictionary that the novel began with. It gives the reader the meaning of the strange and fictional words that are used constantly throughout the novel. Without that little dictionary, I would have been totally lost and confused. The story itself, begins with a fast- paced prologue that takes place through the eyes of a woman who is running from a threat and is about to die. Though the last name to escape her dying lips is the name of a character who is viewed as a villain throughout the novel: Zachariah.

After the prologue we are introduced to our main character Tate who is almost eighteen and is yet to use her wings. You heard me correctly. Wings. Give me a second to just say that wings aren’t the only epic things in the novel: Everybody in Raine Thomas’s universe have some variety of special abilities that we mortals can only dream of. Since there are far too many creatures and names in the Defy world I will simply say that everybody is an Elemental, which means that everybody can control some element in one way or form.

I will admit that for the first few chapters of the novel, I was slightly confused. I have no idea why, but there was just too  much POV (point of view) switching and tense changes that I was just unsure of what was going on. But thankfully, the remainder of the novel wasn’t confusing and was actually quite addicting. The absolute one thing that I loved about the novel (which also is the absolute one thing I love about Thomas’s writing style) is the way she changed the plot from going in one direction and twisted it on its head to head in another direction altogether. For one and a half parts of the novel (because the novel was split into three parts), we just watch Tate and her loving family and friends try to find her because they don’t believe that she could possibly be dead, and then suddenly what was once a search and rescue mission also turns into a Protect the Elder Scroll mission.

Like I said above, there is a ton of POV switching, so you get to see the Defy world and multiple key plot points through the eyes of various characters. But, I have to say that I loved every single moment that was spent between Tate and Sparky (a.k.a. Zachariah, a.k.a. the bad guy who probably/most likely killed the girl from the prologue). Not only do they end up technically “haunting” each other, but the amount of humor and interruptions that came from the two characters had me falling in love. Especially since the chemistry between them was just so perfect and existent.

I would recommend Defy to fans of the fantasy genre as well as readers who want a fun quick read. And Defy is going to be a trilogy. Yay!
