Chasing Truth Cover

At Holden Prep, the rich and powerful rule the school—and they’ll do just about anything to keep their dirty little secrets hidden.

When former con artist Eleanor Ames’s homecoming date commits suicide, she’s positive there’s something more going on. The more questions she asks, though, the more she crosses paths with Miles Beckett. He’s sexy, mysterious, arrogant…and he’s asking all the same questions.

Eleanor might not trust him—she doesn’t even like him—but they can’t keep their hands off of each other. Fighting the infuriating attraction is almost as hard as ignoring the fact that Miles isn’t telling her the truth…and that there’s a good chance he thinks she’s the killer.

Thanks so much for hosting me and celebrating the release of Chasing Truth with me!

Describe your book in 140 characters or less (like a Tweet)
She turned on her family, her only friend is mysteriously dead, and the hot new kid seems to want the one thing Ellie can’t give him–the truth.

What was your inspiration for writing this book? Was it in a dream? A thought while taking a walk?
For years I’ve wanted to write a story with a con-artist main character. So that was my first inspiration, then came Veronica Mars. My editor loves the show and wanted a YA series with a similar feel. I hadn’t seen the series so I binge-watched it and yeah, shades of Veronica can be found in Chasing Truth.

Tell us about the main character(s).
Eleanor Ames has spent nearly her entire life lying, cheating, and stealing. She recently abandoned her con-artists, grifter family for a try at the honest life but it isn’t easy letting that part of herself go. She’s good at conning, good at investigating and studying people but those skills don’t exactly translate to making new friends and her elite prep school.

Do you have a favorite quote or specific part in the book that you really love?
I do have a favorite quote: “My mother told me that a lie is so much more effective when it’s wrapped in truth.”–Eleanor Ames, Chasing Truth

This quote has dual significance for me. First, it serves as foreshadowing for Ellie’s very conflicted feelings about herself and Miles. The fact that there’s truth in nearly everything she tells him, makes it impossible for her to dismiss their relationship and the fact that he does mean something to her.

The quote also represents my approach to writing fiction. Even though I am making it up, it can’t all be craziness and absurdity. The story is better if I can ground it in reality, in truth of some kind, whether through research on a subject matter like the FBI for example or through characters who act human and real.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing? If so, why?
It’s a lot of work to plant seeds that will unveil a killer later in the book and not give too much or too little. To make it feel natural and organic.

What sort of projects do you have going on right now. Any new books coming out?
In January, I have another new series releasing. Book one is called OFF THE ICE. This series is Friday Night Lights with hockey. It revolves around a fictional Minnesota small town where the high school hockey team is the center and subject of all the town’s drama.

It was great having you on the blog today! We hope you’ll decide to stop by again someday, and we wish you much success!!
